  • A living, breathing thing.
Darrian's father spotted a 1962 Mercury Comet in a small Nebraska town. The car was rough, lichen covered everything, and the interior reeked of gas. After rebuilding it with his Dad, the Mercury Comet became a time machine for Darrian. When he gets behind the wheel, the world melts away. Some people don't agree that cars are alive, but for Darrian, a meaningful project car isn't far off from a living, breathing being.
Darrian is a Restoration Technician at the Museum of American Speed.

I enjoyed this video very much. It shows your Comet and your passion to this hobby. The iconic grill, fender "gunsights" , and rear fender tails really set your ride apart from Falcons, Novas, Darts and Valiants of the day.

The 62 was similar to the 61 my uncle had. The most notable difference was the taillights and fins. A nice car, but Darrian should get that rust showing up in spots, most noticeable on the hood, repaired and the car repainted. Those repairs would increase the values of the car more than the cost of them. I would be surprised if he doesn't get offered some big bucks for this car from a collector. What ever he does with this car, I hope he keeps it vintage and unmolested.

How much smaller is this than a Mercury Meteor? I test drove a Meteor yesterday and I loved it but the thing was a boat, I didn't realize how big it was. Granted I'm used to driving a 1967 Volkswagen. But I don't think the Meteor would fit in my garage. But I love the style! Would a Comet be better for me?

What year was the Meteor? In 1962 and beyond Meteor was a mid-size in prior years it was a full size. In 1960, Ford brought out the Falcon and Comet as compact cars. They were built on the same assembly line. The Meteor was a counterpart to the Fairlane that was a full-size car that was changed to a midsize in 1962. The mid-size cars from 1962 through 1967 were close if not the same size as the compact Falcons. In 1968 the mid-size models became true middle sized cars, made larger but still smaller than the full-size cars. The Meteor was discontinued after the 63 model year. In Canada Meteor was the brand name for the entire line of cars branded in the US as Mercury. So if you tell me you drove a Meteor newer than 1963, I would know you were not talking about an American car.

Back then there were only three speed and four speeds which were separate from the bell housing and would bolt up to any bell housing that bolted up to your engine...... In 1970 I got my first job out of school working at a Buick Pontiac and Cadillac dealership...one of my work was assigned a job changing out the clutch on a 69 firebird that had three speed transmission with a 350 V8.... So I'm at the parts counter asking the parts man for a clutch , pressure plate throwout bearing And the parts man asked me what kind of a transmission does it have in it..... So I'm telling him I hate to say this but it looks like it has a fomoco oval cast into the cases of the transmission.... And the parts man laughed at me and said that's right you're seeing exactly what it says as he's telling me the transmission was made by Ford..... I'm going like say what and what happened was general motors transmission plant had burned down and they were having to buy transmissions from Ford and when you look on the bellhousing it was drilled and tapped to fit Ford and GM transmission.... Imagine that

@@l.munnier9658 Hey, sorry if the reply never made it to you. It is a ford based world class t5 transmission, I used a bellhousing adapter, mount, and tailshaft assembly from MDL. This allowed the trans to fit without any modification besides cutting a new hole for the shifter. These are not parts offered by Speedway Motors. You can purchase them from MDL directly, the tailshaft is the key as its a uniquely designed piece to retrofit a T5 into a early falcon, comet, ranchero.
