- Pico de Gallo is a chunky tomato salsa recipe that’s simple to make at home with fresh ingredients. It’s an authentic Mexican salsa that's delicious, addictive and has a spicy kick.
Made from tomatoes, onion, cilantro, a spicy chile like jalapeño or serrano peppers, lime juice and salt, it's also known as salsa fresca (fresh sauce).

It tastes delicious if you add a little bit of vinegar and black pepper. Trust in me, I'm mexican. ;)
This is similar to my mom's chunky salsa. We grew up having it at least once a day in a week. Mostly just the tomatoes and the onions, with out taking out the tomato seeds. If it is in season, she mix in the flesh of a "piko" mango, or just the mango shoot/tops/sprout.

I love this fresh salsa. You can also blend it and serve it with totopos (tortilla chips). My sister in law adds lime to her, but I have come to like it better without it. I personally prefer the color and flavor of red onion.
This recipe is what we use to top Carnitas, along side pickled onions and pickled jalapeños. Can’t wait to make it creamy!

I leave the seeds in. I absolutely love the salty and hot and sour tomato-onion-lime juice that is left in the bowl after all the chunks are gone. I'll just drink it lol.

We put pico de gallo on EVERYTHING even on guacamole and cheese curd which is a very mexican food and a friendly non fat dairy alternative to greek yogurt. My fave dish to eat pico de gallo with is Tacos. And this was an excellent authentic recipe and I love you know and respect the culture. Saludos desde México 🇲🇽 😘

I just made this. Have been wanting to try it forever. I took up canning during quarantine and was excited to can this recipe. I made some mild and hot. I also added corn and black beans to another bath for a different flavor. They are all amazing and I got 8 jars of pico store and eat this summer and fall. Unless I eat it all this holiday weekend. We used to buy pico de gallo when we were climbing in Hueco Tanks outside El Paso (I did a few V7s). El Paso and Juarez are really one city. Bakeries on the south side are great. We were in Juarez many times to shop. My wife and mother in law are tall and blond, and people deferred to us in queue. We refused politely just taking our place in line. Nothing but good memories.
It was delicious. My first ever cooked salsa. Brought it to the party. My friends and I loved it. So easy. I followed the recipe, did not change anything. Thank you Lisa for sharing!

I used to work a Mexican restaurant (in Canada though) and our pico de gallo was made the exact same way except we did use jalepenos instead. It's very good!

Lisa, I would suggest that you get a lemon and/or lime squeezer. I have a lime squeezer by Chef’n and it is quite a handy device.

As always I love your videos. I have to say I think it's interesting that you mentioned how Cinco de Mayo isn't really celebrated that much in Mexico, because what a lot of people don't know is that the holiday was actually created by an American during the Gilded Age.

Lisa!! I highly recommend microwaving the lime to get more juice out! Maybe like 5-10 seconds is good enough. I do this & it helps use up the remaining juice. The end may be hot so be careful 😊👍

Yum! I love Pico De Gallo. I make it like once a week. I use jalapenos though...I didnt know they use serranos. I'm not sure my kids could handle the heat!
Yes, serranos are definitely hotter than jalapenos. So probably better to stick with jalapenos for the kids. Haha. :)

I'm actually surprised you nailed the salsa de pico de gallo! (: we sometimes use olive oil instead of lime. I'm from Mexico and fun fact, in Puebla they do celebrate 5 de mayo, it's the only state that does for obvious reasons and we do eat pico de gallo with different dishes but it goes best with molletes during breakfast.

In Brazil we use this salsa as side dish in barbecues. We eat the pieces of stake with rice, potato salad, mandioc flour and this salsa.
