Thank you again for such a companionable inspiring video. One thing I’ve started to do (inspired by your videos) is take cardboard boxes apart. If they are slightly damp the laminations separate leaving smooth paper, corrugated paper and slightly corrugated paper. These can create interesting textures, and the corrugated paper can be used to print as well. If I’m going to do this I put varnish or washable pva on it first to make it last longer. You do encourage us to think outside the box! 😊
Great ideas, Jan! Keep exploring! I LOVE deconstructing packing materials - there are so many wonderful textures to be found. And GREAT tip to varnish the materials first to extend the life of the materials - I hadn't thought of that!
Yes, I know the feeling of being buried in papers! 🤪 This summer I got a tall (Pax) wardrobe from IKEA and put tons of shelves a few inches apart into it. I basically use them as flat files and it has helped a TON. I’ll make a note to make a video on how I store my papers - thanks for the idea! I bet others would benefit too ❤️

But as a complete beginner with zero experience with painting or collage I’m wondering if you can direct me to some very basic info about what supplies I should be gathering/buying and where the best places to get things are. Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here ☺️ I usually like to use Mixed Media sketchbooks (I use Canson XL mixed media books) and large sheets of either mixed media or watercolor paper. For the large sheets, 300 gsm is ideal, but often $$$, so try a few different kinds and see what you like and what you can reasonably afford. In my opinion, it’s always better to have more of the cheaper paper that you feel free to experiment on than only a few pieces that you feel pressured to “make something great” on ❤️
Jackie, I was lucky enough to stumble across your CZcams channel last night, and I am SO enjoying watching your art process! You are so inspiring and creative! I have never painted on paper using acrylics, and I am curious if it is necessary to apply a layer of gesso first before painting?? I have plenty of large sheets of 140# and 300# hot press watercolor paper, as well as a roll of heavy printmaking paper (Arches BFK RIves) I would love to paint on, but I'm not sure about the priming? Deanna! I’m so happy to have you here!! Gesso will help your paints stay on top of the paper without going into it, but it’s really just personal preference. I rarely gesso my paper. If the paper curls up after I paint, I apply a think layer of gloss medium on the back of the paper and it takes care of the issue. The heavier the paper, the less chance you’ll have of it curling up. Experiment and see what feels best to you! ❤️❤️❤️
What kind of paper are you using to make the marks on? I like it because it's not super white like copy paper is, which I find is too white!! Also what is your favorite thing to use for glue after everything you've tried? thank you.
I know this may be difficult to answer as collage is really intuitive, but I’m someone who has great difficulty mixing patterns, even in clothes… my brain has not been able to relax into the intuitive process. Do you have any suggestions for beginners when it comes to choosing papers that would “go” together? Like are there concepts to consider when you’re first starting out that help in creating a *cohesive*, balanced piece?
Hi Gina! This is a great question. I agree that it’s quite intuitive, but I do have a few suggestions for you. ☺️ (1) Try collaging in just one color (shades of red, for example) - this will give you a sense of the amount of sameness you like and the amount of differences you like. (2) Try collaging using patterns of all shapes and sizes and take note of whether you tend to like repeating shapes of different sizes or various shapes of the same size or a mix of the two. Each time you do it, notice which patterns/shapes/sizes you’re drawn to as you go. ❤️

It’s actually packing paper - unfortunately I don’t know the brand because it was used to fill a box that I received in the mail. Wish I had a better answer!
It probably took about an hour, maybe 90 minutes to make the paper and the collage itself (excluding drying time for the paint on the collage paper). Not too long considering that I ended up with two collages at the end!
