- You may have hoped to save kale seeds and they never showed up. Why? We will look at that. But saving seeds does not only save you money it also helps your plants adapt their genetics or epigenetics to your property and climate. Kale seed saving has one hurdle to overcome and if you do this one thing you will be able to save seeds and never have to buy them again.

My kale I kept through winter went to seed, all good, but now its over 6ft tall xD

I'm in zone 5a. I made the mistake of planting purple kale to close to an invasive plant 3 years ago. So I let it go wild. Thinking it would die off. Nope it's still here with no care from me.
Lucky you!. You may get perpetual supply of Kale. I've read that certain types of Kales are native to Turkey, Iran, Siberia etc. and they grow in the wild.
grew kale in spring . 2 weeks into summer all my vege's have bolted.. spinach bolted ,Swiss chard has bolted and all 6 kale have bolted. I'm sure your theory is correct .
in my case . lack of good medium and heat .

I live in florida zone 9B…I just grew Lacinato Kale and collards this year..I was going to pull up my kale plants (August) but knowing now that they are biannual…Hopefully they will seed this spring..My collards bolted and it was their first year. Mine went to seed , I cut them off and hung them in a cool place. Now the original plant has new leaves forming. When should I plant the seeds I ‘ve collected. I live in zone 8a. Could I start them under a grow light?

Video I would like to see is colloidal silver. Is what everyone claims about it true? Is it toxic? I think there is a lot of misinformation about it out there.
Please don’t use colloidal silver. It has very little evidence to show that it’s effective for anything other than maybe some minor anti-microbial properties when used topically.
The body has no biological use for silver, and has difficulty getting rid of it, so it can cause irreversible disfigurement by discoloring your tissues, in particular your skin and the whites of your eyes. The condition is called argyria.
There are many natural botanical ingredients that show far more beneficial effects for multiple conditions, if you don’t want to use artificial pharmaceuticals.

My kale grew tall can I cut them short? And will it continue to grow?
I cut off the top when the flowers start to come out and it keeps growing.
What is the coldest they will survive?
It depends what cultivar you have. (There are something like 70+ types of Kales).
The purple Kale I got last year from a local greenhouse, survived upto -20ºC (which were sub-arctic temps for about one week) and rest of winter temps (-10ºC) with lots of snow, freezing and thawing cycles. It had no protection.
Only it's leaves were burnt, but it perked up this year (spring), flowered and seeded. Seed pods are still green but plant is now producing more and more branches without any flowers (My Canadian cold hardiness zone is 6b).
(Previously I have grown dinosaur kale and curly kales: both could survive frosts, but didnt survive winter).
If you live in a colder climate, you can plant some Kales in the pots and try not to harvest too many leaves. When winter arrives, move those pots indoors (kitchen/basement etc). When winter is over, move them back outdoors after the frosting days of spring are over. They will flower and produce seeds during that spring/summer. Hope this helps.
@@moecreations1 if your plant survived -20 for a while, that’s the plant I’d be trying to grow out more and see which of its seeds is even hardier. We got a spell of -38. I shall leave my kale alone this year and see if any survive under the snow.
@@karenwilliams5724 : I would suggest getting purple or Siberian Kale as well. Also, if plant/ground is covered with some snow almost all winter long, snow itself would give some protection from extreme cold temps. Search/watch some videos about how people are building/protecting their gardens in Alaska too. Good luck!
How do you store them in the fridge? Do you cover in napkin or in a bag or container?
If you were asking about seed storage, use zip-lock bags or sealed container. (dont use freezer section of refrigerator)
My Kale is going to seed now. its shooting out the seed pods. Do I wait for the plant and pods to turn brown and brittle to make sure they are mature as I want seeds that are ready to go after some time.
Wait until pods have dried out (it's stem under the pod will die/dry out too).
What if I pulled the stem before the pod turns brown ??
