Can you make a video showing people how to change the oil? So MANY people assume since the cars running they don't need to do anything to it, if you educate more on it, people may start doing it more often. I'm sure you have a video that shows it, but people don't all have the same car, maybe showing a few different cars would help those that have no idea where to start 🙂 love ya Scotty!

Scotty, you can almost double your viewer traffic by doing more motor cycle vids.
I want to point out something else that helps maintain the car A/C and costs nothing. And that is, always run the A/C on your car, at least two minutes, once a week, 52 weeks a year! The proof is that in my 2002 Camry owners manual, they say the exact same thing, (and recommend running A/C for at least 30 seconds). Even in winter you should run the A/C (I do it while warming up since the car's cold anyway). Doing this circulates the refrigerant oil to keep the seals wet and lubricated. If you don't do this the internal seals will dry out, and then your A/C is going to conk out and need fixing, sooner not later.

If I had unlimited funds I would probably have high-end Italian and German cars from the 1980s with copious amounts of spare parts, a dedicated fuel supply, and a dedicated expert mechanic staff. I agree that the interiors are not as nice as I would like, and I am interested in hearing why you say the door locks are garbage, however I have been very pleased with my 2015 Sienna so far🤑.

My Dodge Dakota went 314,000 miles just by showing it Scotty Kilmer videos every week. You were the only reason that it lived so long. You, and Mobil 1 every 5000 miles. Valve seals were a little leaky toward the end, bc it smoked on idle and under closed throttle vacuum. But what's a little smoke among friends. Lubed the top end, lol. It actually still ran when it went to the salvage yard. It just had rusted out too much. "From rust they came, to rust they shall go."
Would have lasted longer if you hadn't used mobil1. Worst oil on the planet
Mine has 231k miles and i change oil about 4-5k. Full synthetic quaker state at Walmart for 22 bucks.

Lubegard Seal Fixx is the same product (100% Glycol Esters). Lubegard is less expensive as well.

I had a rear main seal that was leaking very slowly, still leaving drips everywhere though. I added some AT 205 and the bottom of my engine is dry! This stuff really works.

@@sl4983 So far it seems waaaay better than stop leak. 4,000 miles since I used it and not a drip. The AT 205 has the consistency of water. Pretty amazing stuff, IMHO.
@@micahrichey5335 Thank you. I will use AT 205 when I will catch some oil leaks. I own a 2013 Ford Cmax Hybrid SE 110000 m. And 2012 Kia Soul 100000 m. For now, Kia is burning oil.
Hey Scotty. You said the same thing that my NEW mechanic said. Spark plugs are the first thing to look at. Well that didn't happen at the Toyota dealer here in Lufkin, Tx. They told me I had an injector out and wanted $1600 for all six or 800 for the 1. I took it to another mechanic to get the injectors done cheaper, he replaced the spark plugs and all is well for over a year now. You can't even trust the Dealerships anymore! What a world we live in. Thanks for the Great videos!!! I mean you would think that a Toyota dealership would be able to find even a complicated problem. Not really. They couldn't even find a bad spark plug. And I had to wait almost a year to get it to the second mechanic because I had to save up enough money. So The Toyota dealership not only screwed up the diagnosis, they made me unable to drive my 4 runner for almost a year while I saved up money for something I did not need. Times like that make me wish I had become a lawyer :) That would have been a fun case.
I hope you took the bad spark plugs and the report from your mechanic to the dealership that you first went to to get your your diagnostic fee returned to you. and if they don't go on Google and rip them a new one, dealerships depend on Google reviews and if you give them a real bad one and everybody reads it the dealership will probably contact you begging you to take your money back
My brother in law works for dealerships for twenty years. He hates independent mechanics. He is the guy that tries and convince you need to change your headlamp fluid and rotate your radio speakers. So yeah you are right

ATTENTION SCOTTY I love watching and learning I'm 62 now and every time you mention a product or show one I must watch and listen to you about 50 times to find out what it is you say and show it so fast I must go back and fourth over and over to find out what it is. In the video settings (it’s a gear looking widget when you scroll over a video) you can slow down video playback speed and rewind the video to whatever time stamp you want.

Well done Scotty! As ever, you are a rock of sensible automotive sense and I always learn something new from your videos! My own mantra is: get the basics right, do the basics right which means regular oil and filter changes every 10k kms, (more often than the manufacturer's spec), spark plugs every 60k kms and I check all the levels (oil, coolant and brake) and tyres once two weeks. Seems to work for me.

Scotty, you remind of the old Fram oil filter television commercial: The mechanic holds up the filter and says "You can pay me now, or pay me later." Change the oil and filter regularly! Keep up the good work!
Fram had a commercial like that? They literally make the worst oil filters you can buy...

Oil is the life blood of every engine and changing often can help it last over 300,000 miles, I have had 2 vehicles that have lasted over 310,000 miles and changing your oil every 3,000 miles is very important. The cars I had said in the manuals change oil every 5,000 miles, but the oil was way too dirty and smelled very used. So I changed mine every 3,00 miles and the oil looked good but I knew it was breaking down and needed changing. Also a good oil Filter is a must every 3,000 miles.
What if you use a full synthetic? 5000 or 3000 miles
I had a 2000 Taurus that had 416,000 miles on it when it quit running.

Mobile 1 and a filter cost me about $35.I try for every 4,000 miles. Best $35 you can spend on your car.

Mr Kilmer you are one of my favorite teachers in this hobby. All your recommendations is what they call "no nonsense".
I'm sure he's referring to other engines but the 2az-fe has a timing chain. No cam seals. No oil pump seals you literally pull the passenger tire, take the accessories belt off, pull the crank pulley, and the front main seal is right there. Like... RIGHT there. The 2azfe is basically a big lego set. Just a little tip to anyone working on this engine. Love ya scotty. Sorry.

Anyone know of a YT personality like Scotty who loves to share his wisdom, but that gives life wisdom, like an old grandfather who you know has been through it and loves to give advice? That is one thing this world (here in the U.S.) is needed, the wisdom and advice from the elderly... but no, we shove them in old folk homes.
My last car, a Suzuki SX4 hatchback lasted 345,000 miles. I changed the oil about every 5,000-7,000 miles faithfully. I used all different kinds and weights of oils. The cheapest I could find on sale.

It's like the head gasket seal - much easier than pulling the engine apprt to change the head gasket . I had really good luck with the old Motor Purr Seal-Up - they also had a transmission seal leak/shifting fix - TransTune and the most popular Motor Honey / which was basically water soluble oil that would lubricate the water pump and devoid the cooling system of rust . Great Products in the 70s and 80s

Love my Highlander!! 2009 Limited from Japan. The DVD player works and it drives like a dream despite needing a tune up. I put STP gas treatment in it so it's quiet 🤫. 197k miles, it should get to 400k 🤘
Scotty you’ve always been my go to guy when it comes to car repairs. My son’s RAV4 has oil seeps (not leaks yet) as you’ve found in this video. I just ordered 2 bottles of AT-205 and will see how well it works on his car of 180,000 some odd miles. I’ll let you know if it works on his Toyota. Thanks for another outstanding video!

Blue Devil works better , recommend by Popular Mechanics ! Mechanic wanted over , $500.00 to fix my leaking oil seal . $17.00 at AutoZone and a week later no more leak and that was over a year ago . It works great !!! '02 Toyota Sienna with over 215,000 miles on it !

I'm a professional mechanic. I have been since 2011.
You are so correct. I work with a guy (who is also a mechanic) who doesn't take care of his vehicles at all. I take immaculate care of mine. Weekly washing. Fixing every single thing (even cosmetic) that breaks or wears out. I rarely have a problem. He has problems all of the time. Engine oil leaks. Transmission leaks. Flat tires all the time (I check my tire pressure once every two weeks). etc etc etc.
These vehicles give you back what you put into them.
I just bought a new Subaru WRX as a second (fun) car and am hoping to get a lifetime of fun out of it! I have a 1991 Toyota 4-runner that has EVERYTHING still working on it. I bought it from the original owner that took exceptional care of it. The rear window works, the moonroof, the power windows/locks. the window defroster strips, etc etc. It is a 5 speed manual 4wd with automatic locking front hubs. Yup they still work despite being "notorious for failing". They were serviced regularly by Toyota. It has 395,xxx miles on it now. It had one engine put in it at 28,000 miles by the dealer under warranty. The original owner blew a headgasket (V6 engine) going up a mountain pass in Colorado.
I have a 2011 F-150 (5.0L V8 4wd) with 145,xxx miles. The only problem it has ever had was one wire broke going from the body to the driver's door module where they flex inside the rubber tube between the door and body.
I have had multiple motorcycles that I have taken great care of. These older motorcycles have taken me all over the country with minimal issues. I buy a factory service manual for these and service them.
I had a 2009 Kawasaki KLR and changed the oil every 1,500 miles because that is when it changed color. I kept ethanol free gas in it at all times. Never had a lick of trouble from it.
I have a new 2023 Kawasaki KLR and change the oil every 2,000 miles because that is when it changes color (gets dark). I wash the bike, clean & lube the chain, correctly adjust the cam chain tensioner, and keep the tire pressure correct. I hope to also have years of service from it!

That is a great point - it's not just about the money, knowing that every step is done right is worth more, especially when some mechanics/dealerships can't be trusted.

Great video Scotty, definitely agree on the 5 cylinder comment. Had an inline 5 cylinder Jetta, lots of torque for the displacement, I could pull hills on the freeway in 5th gear.
Scotty, glad to know your still in Rhode Island… i’m over the border in Swansea, Ma… My 04’ Highlander with 268k miles was sitting on the grass for three years due to me several years ago only being able to afford to keep my newer car on the road… well i definitely needed a battery and i couldn’t believe that my Highlander that was idle for three years started up no problem! I was very excited! Looking to put it back on the road asap!

I have found that on older cars if you use synthetic oil and have been using conventional, it will start to develop seal leaks.
I have used several brands of seal restorer on my old vehicles and tractors all worked pretty well.
Did you use it only once leaks were found or did you use it on motors with no leaks aswell?

The key is old seals it works if they are old and shrunken. I dont think a newer engine needs it.

I love your historical perspective on cars and the auto industry.
I bought a 2019 370Z new and am now hitting about 48k miles. The oil has been changed every 3k miles with a good filter that has filtration media that filters down to very small micron size particles. Additionally, I let the oil temp get up to a suitable level before I load the engine or rev it to higher levels. The result has been that there is no discernable oil consumption on my dipstick at the 3k mile intervals when I service it. I think that my careful and extended break-in also helped in my engine wearing it properly. Scotty is 100% right in his recommendation of good oil maintenance in prolonging the life of your engine.
When I was in the Air Force, any equipment that has an engine in it, the operating manual always says to let it warm to operating temperature before revving it. I follow it to this day for all my vehicles. I notice other people's car, who just starts up & drive off, their engine doesn't purr, but instead makes a rat tat tat noise, like the engine is struggling. Regardless if their vehicle is new or old.
I don't think 48k miles is enough to begin showing issues though... Think they would show up a lot later
@@katdat1399 I think you're right about modern engines, especially the ones made in Japan with their highly automated and accurate machining processes. I read that Nissan expects that the VQ37 engine in this car should go at least 250k miles without problems.
48k is still mint. New lol if you burning oil at 48k you got a fucked up car

Great video - Fantastic advice. -What a difference between the US and the UK. Our annual MOT (safety test) would not allow any car to go through with faulty ABS and we would have to have it repaired.
I'm the same as you as i spent years and years of owning cars and motorbikes without ABS so it really does not bother me.
But Cadence braking is something of a mystery to 'youngsters' as they rely on ABS which does not always stop you when you want the car to stop.
In the snow you find a lot of cars in ditches because ABS does not stop you as well as cadence braking while going down hill etc - So yes i agree with your comment about ABS and that it does not really matter.
But fewer and fewer people have experience of cars without ABS or traction control and even motorcycles have to have ABS fitted and have done for quite a few years or they cant be sold in the UK and Europe. ...
With ABS going down hill don't lock but don't stop either 😮

Mr Kilmer, thanks for everything. I enjoyed the episode when you featured your wife's ES300 - I JUST bought an 01. 114k and incredible shape. Almost perfect. Transmission had an issue but a common one with that Aisin tran and I was sure I knew - if fluid wasn't changed, etc, it would overheat and you'd suddenly lose the ability to upshift and lose reverse, also clunking, etc. It's at my transmission guy, whov verified he shared my suspicion and that it was very fixable. Anyway, I used that knowledge to talk the seller from $3000 to $500 cash. I made a big stink that he had overfilled both transmission and engine, had not serviced the car, and had for some terrible reason only changed 2 sparkplugs. It's at the shop right now. So excited to restore it. It was largely you that taught me all of this. So thank you!!!

Alternative to adding AT-205 to engine oil as a quick fix for leaks.
Start using a "high mileage oil". They have different additives than regular oil that are intended to condition old or lightly worn seals, in the short term.
But at the end of the day, a bad seal will need to be replaced.
By the time the vehicle finally arrives at the mechanic for an oil leak issue, it definitely needs to be replaced.
How many miles would be smart to start high mileage? Also change spark plugs preventativly? 100k Acadia
@@user-ie3kk9oq1p now. High mileage oil can be done 75k + and typically plugs are scheduled at 60k miles maximum.
@@user-ie3kk9oq1p I think most high mileage oil recommends 75k or higher. For plugs, refer to your manual or look online to see what it comes with from the factory. Even if you have iridium plugs from the factory, at 100k I would be changing them.
I've got to do my Toyota Carib transmission seal and the seal where the CV arm goes in. The reseal stuff actually worked quite well. I'm in NZ so had to use what was available. Really looking forward to the horribleness.

Gotta be real with you, a lot of vehicles leak from the axles and what not. It's really not a big deal most of the time and you can easily get away with ignoring it.
@@michaelregalia2539 I agree, but crank seal is likely causing axle seal leak. Can't have oils in the clutch smell. That's what made me decide.

Hard to get atp205 in Poland but I hear using an oil for high mileage engines works similarly, it has detergents and also conditions the seals.
I tried it. It didn't fix the seals on my pickup. Waste of money.
Most high mileage oils just have more zinc in them and other additives to smooth out cracks and pits to help it idle and run better. Doesn't do much to the seals
Changed the oil in my truck every 4000 to 6000 miles. At 100,000 made the mistake of taking to the dealer and paying for their big service. Thats when all the issues started, 1st transmission solenoid pack went out 2k miles later, then at 105k went to this Oil Changer place where they used a semi synthetic oil. I have always used Valvoline non synthetic.
At 108K started strange rattle clickity clack noise. Took it to a local shop and found that it had spun out a cam bearing. Needless to say took out the engine. So by now you already know that my Truck is a 2012 5.7 Ram 1500.

In-line engines like a straight 6 have great reputations. My grandfather never stopped talking about a straight 6 he had . The trouble with my old Volvo 240s is that the odometers ALWAYS break at about 87,000. I fixed it twice. Not myself. There's a speedometer repair shop a mile away. Anyway, it's a '76. It was broken when I bought it and I drove the crap out that car and it still ran good when I sold it to a kid for $800. I wish I kept it. I had an 82 and I gave that to a neighbor. Her son broke the headlight so they trashed it. I wanted to trash them. That's....I wish I still had it. A working car is a valuable thing. Now you don't need keys to open the dang door. The car has to think about it for a minute. I'd rather use the key. And a key to start it
I, too, swear by straight 6s. Great engines. Perfectly balanced. Love my BMW 6spd with straight 6. So smooth.
@@stevecariggillio4139 I had a 53 ford delivery panel, straight 6 ran like a sawing machine, 1000's of miles on it. sold it to hippie who promise to maintain it, ran in to him years later, he said that he never done any maintenance on the truck, not even change the oil...😔I still regret salen it.😮💨
