Oh you finally made it to Lyon! I see you have not been deceived by our wonderful rail network!
For your information, the two last stops on metro line B opened only 2 weeks ago, on October 20. It is also planned to run 4-car trains on line B and D very soon. Both lines are very special because they do not have platform screen doors despite being 100% automatic. For passenger safety, an infrared beam sensor is installed at the edge of the platform (below the footstep) and cuts all power if something or someone falls on the tracks. Metro line D is the first heavy-large-size automated metro built in the world (in 1991), as the VAL (from 1980) and the London DLR (1987), are light rail systems.
It’s sad that you were not able to ride Funicular F2, which really looks like a metro on a cable, runs very fast.
Line C is the only rack railway line used in a Metro in the world, and is also unique because the rack wheel can engage or disengage at the end of the inclined tunnel. It was an old funicular, converted into a rack railway metro in the 1970s.
If only I knew you were in town I would have shown you very interesting things in Lyon!
The idea of a fully automated metro without platform doors isn't unique to Lyon either! Here in the UK, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in London also doesn't have platform screen doors, and neither does the Nuremburg U-Bahn in Germany. Not sure about London, but Nuremburg also uses the same type of infrared beam sensor as Lyon.
However, in Italy (my other country - I'm both British and Italian in case you don't know) the very few automated metro systems we have (Brescia, Turin, Rome line C and Milan lines 4/5) do have platform doors.
On Sunday 16th August 1998, I spent a day in Lyon, two and a half months after completing a work assignment in Munich, Germany. At the time, I could buy a 24 hour pass, and ride the trams, busses and also the metro all day. In 1998, there were no fare gates on the Lyon metro, they must have been installed decades later. The SNCF station Part Dieu has a metro connection to the Line B. There were no trams at the time, that I could remember, if you neglect the existence of Metro line C. That was the only metro line at the time, that did not have a third rail, but had overhead wire and a cog rail for most of the route except at Cuire. I was amazed at how steep Croix-Paquet was, beats out Aquarium on Boston's blue line. I've been on both the St Jean-St Just and Fourviere funiculars. At Minimes, there was a red neon light destination sign for the platforms, one had "St Just" illuminated and the other "St Jean", with really lovely work done to make the neon lights shaped into the destination letters, I am not sure how otherwise to describe it. I rode almost all the metro line D that day, I cannot remember if I went as far as Gare de Vaise but I did go as far as Valmy, and then rode all the way to Venissieux.
At some stage I did have a video made of the Lyon Metro from my 16th August 1998, with a "Gilles Peterson Worldwide" music show as the background music, that I recorded off the air the same day while in Lyon. It was a nice visit. Two days later I flew back home to the USA to finish my last year of university.
Nice video. The metro trains before the latest generation were all designed by Belgian transport expert Philippe Neerman, who also designed the first-generation of metro trains of Brussels, metro trains of Marseille, the first low-floor trams TSF of Grenoble/Paris/Rouen - TSF-2. And riding line B you also passed the only ghost station on the Lyon network? Maybe a tip for an urbex trip? :)
Sabay sabay kapag nakakuha ng score kay @Beno!
Driverless is really cool, and even cooler with the bottom window. That funicular route looks fantastic. I like that illuminated platform floor.
Great video ! Fun fact: their newest metro trains have the same VF drive as Paris' MP14, both being made at the same time by the same manufacturer (Alstom)
this one actually sounds more clearer and louder compared to the MP14
@@oforid2227 Yeah, probably because of the lack of platform screen doors
@@imaginox9 i mean on the train itself
@@oforid2227Ah, maybe the soundproofing is lighter then
@@imaginox9 oh yh that might be it
Never been to Lyon but they do have some amazing trains and trams.
love how the door sounds like ASDA security detector
10:32 this station reminds me of Sofia
Line B : Alstom OniX IGBT VVVF (same as Mp14 in L4-11-14 at Paris)
Line A and C : Chopper
Line D Chopper 4 quadrants.
Blackpool transport have same type tram
I do wonder why France builds their trains so strangely
I had it on Minecraft Java modded 😊
