      Would heartily recommend Feeling Blue, as someone who has struggled massively with the term structure in Cambridge. I totally relate with the feeling of being disjointed and having two lives. I hate not being able to properly get into city life at uni or at home. I feel like I can't join in with anything at home because I'm not here half the year, but then spend my vacs alone and sad lol help

    I think the stereotype that your first year at uni has to be the best year of your life and completely perfect every minute is really unhealthy. It causes a lot more mental health problems for freshers I think when you feel like you're not enjoying it as much as you should. Its definitely something that I felt as a first year this year - I had an amazing year but spent too much time feeling pressure to love every minute of it regardless.

    • @MayMay-jy9mr
      @MayMay-jy9mr Před 4 lety +6

      @@TheAwesomeTolga198 you're right because some have completely different problems and often worse problems to deal with that are completely different to ours due to the different culture and experiences. You might want to think twice about generalising all of asia into some poor third world stereotype too... its a massive continent with a myriad of different cultures, people, socioeconomic climates and political systems, many of which are progressive and much better than the uk. Similarly the regions that have much tougher hardships to deal with deserve to be recognised specifically - is quite ignorant to just group everybody into "kids in asia". Just because there are worse problems out there doesn't mean that other problems don't deserve recognition. Its like saying because the gun problem in america is so awful we shouldn't complain about knife crime in london...

    As an alum, I wish someone had told me when I was a student to be strict about working "office hours" only (9-5.30) and then having breaks on evenings and (partial?) weekends, and also the 80/20 rule. It's not worth working yourself into the ground for, and learning to be "good enough" and do the rest on the fly rather than perfect with everything finished like in high school, was a super important thing I learned in my last few years and genuinely a really important life skill

    Agreed - ridiculous amounts of pressure to perfectly enjoy uni. I think the way I’ve described it is everyone talks about going to uni, no one talks about staying. It can’t all be parties and fun and gossip and takeaways and all nighters , because you need to live there. It needs to be ur constant. You need to wash and chill and shop and revise and deal with crappy life events.
    The more I’ve spoken about this, the more I’ve realised that other people feel the same too! Nobody tends to find it 100% perfect, but bc there is the pressure to, we all tend to try and paint this image too!

    I'm from Germany and I'm going to start university in Oktober🙈 I'm sooo excited! Our university system is so different though with how it's all organized and all. We just have two semesters per year, a "Wintersemester" from Oktober to March and a "Sommersemester" from April to September. During the semester there usually isn't a lot of work to do, maybe an assignment here and there but really not much for most courses. Most students work during the semester. Only two times a year at the and of each semester you would have 5-8 exams within about 3-4 weeks and that's when you really have to study hard😅

    • @lisak2565
      @lisak2565 Před 4 lety +1

      Sophie I‘m studying at a German university and can‘t completely confirm to what you’re saying. Please do not generalize things. It very much depends if your studies are government-funded or if you need to earn your own money and also depends on what you’re studying. I did not really have had holidays for the last two years as I was working really hard for my grades and also had a lot of term papers to do within the semester break. I did not even have the time for earning extra money or internships because I had to finish my studies within three years. Most of students are studying for more than three years. Please don’t be too naive. Studying is great but can be a lot of work. It’s possible you have up to 4 or 5 exams per week while classes are still running.

Think about what you did and didn’t like about the college you visited and use that to make a list of priorities and pick based on that (I’d say size, location, accommodation and the wealth of the college are probably the things that affect your student experience most). Do you know the average GPA of Oxford students throughout the three years?
    Would going to Oxford be a disadvantage when applying for grad school because it is harder and therefore GPA would be lower?

    • @smallkat99
      @smallkat99 Před 5 lety +1

      English universities don't really work on the GPA system. It's really your final degree classification that counts.

    • @hryank33
      @hryank33 Před 5 lety

      NightSkies Dark Thank you. I use GPA because that is the word I know. Right after that i check and see that in the UK over 70% you get First Class. But my concern is still on the impact of oxford education has on graduate school acceptance.

    • @smallkat99
      @smallkat99 Před 5 lety

      @@hryank33 having an Oxbridge degree still has quite a bit of cachet when going on to do graduate studies (whether that's justified or not!) and of course many Oxford students can and do continue on to do their Masters or PhD at Oxford. However if you got a Third it is unlikely that anywhere would take you on as a PhD student. If you get a Third then I would suspect that PHD work wouldn't be something one was aiming for, since it's even harder! If you are applying to universities in England (or the UK) with a view to graduate degrees then you need to be prepared for the intensity of work at Oxford. There are plenty of good universities that do 10 week terms 😀
