RIMOWA LUGGAGE REVIEW 2023! (Is it WORTH $1050??)

  • In this video you will see a Rimowa luggage review. I will also discuss if I think that it is worth the $1,050 price tag. This Rimowa luggage review will be specifically for the Rimowa Original Cabin. I decided to choose the Rimowa original cabin black instead of the original silver color because I found the Rimowa original to be too shiny when seen in store. I will do a Rimowa review and show different aspects about the Rimowa cabin that I like and dislike.

    Rimowa luggage is very expensive and the Rimowa Cabin retails for $1050 in all solid colors. Rimowa has also done collaborations with companies like Supreme, Off-White, Dior, AESOP, and Moncler so the popularity of the brand continues to increase. While the Rimowa Original Cabin is very expensive, these collaboration versions are even more expensive and can be over $5000 in some cases.
    Before the Rimowa suitcase, I had Tumi luggage and wanted to find a piece of luggage that was different and higher quality. I found Rimowa and was attracted to the history and overall approach that Rimowa takes toward its products. Even with the high price tag, I do find that the Rimowa cabin is worth its price and will hold its value more than other luggage.
    Rimowa offers a variety of different models and sizes to accommodate many customer's luggage needs.

    I bought my first rimowa topas (now it’s called original) in check-in size back in 2013. I am a frequent traveler, I’m talking about five days a week and I travel on weekly basis. Even though there are missing studs, lots and lots of scratches, my 8 year-old rimowa is still working perfectly. Today, I bought my second riwoma suitcase, in same size, same model, just different colour this time.

      @Pebble 7 I absolutely love it. I customized the wheels and handles but kept it silver. It's absolutely stunning and made very well. I've flown with it twice and both times I was able to carry it on my flight. It has a few small scratches but it doesn't hurt the look at all. I own a few high end carry ons but this one has tons of character if that makes sense.

    This video is one of my favourite Rimowa representations on CZcams. Clear and crisp, you break it down beautifully and keep it concise with great visuals. Genuinely so nice to watch! One question I’d like your opinion on - how have you enjoyed the black colour for the past few years? If you were to purchase the cabin size again, would you still choose black or would you go for silver?

    • @rand39830
      @rand39830 Před rokem +1

      @@rand39830 I already had a silver cabin twist with the brown coloured leather handles prior to this, which I really love using. I ended up ordering both the silver and the black cabin bags and after a lot of back and forth, I decided to keep the black. Mainly because it was different to what you see loads of in the airport, and I already had the silver from the cabin twist. I also recently bought the check-in large in the silver original and I also have the trunk plus in silver original. I love both the cabin ones I have already, and my suggestion to you would be that, if you are on the fence, and this is your first time to Rimowa, I would go for the silver colour way. Don’t get me wrong the black is super cool and I love it so much, but if you were to just have one, you can’t beat that classic silver. It just feels so special to travel with and you’ll be so happy with your decision. I actually like having a black as a cabin/check in, then mixing that with a silver cabin/check-in. That to me is the best :)

    I recommend buying Rimowa in Europe as opposed to anywhere in North America. You can save $200-300 just on your VAT return alone and a slight price adjustment as they are a sliver cheaper in Europe.
    I bought my first Rimowa in Paris, France (The compact design from about 7 years ago. It still works and is great for packing things back, just slightly inconvenient with the two wheel design) and my second Rimowa in Copenhagen, Denmark (the most recent Original Cabin, bought it a few months ago). There are limited official retailers, so make sure you are buying it from a reputable department reseller or official Rimowa store only. Rimowa will list these on their site.
    They are 100% worth it.

    Hello Jamey and everyone that has been using the carry on aluminum suitcase. Can you share some experience flying with luggage's weight restrictions? Some airlines offer 12kg for economic class, 18kg for business class, and some trains do not limit the weight as long as we can handle ourselves. That would be fine. But some others only allow 7kg for economic tier, and 15kg for business tier. Do you just flight with business (and up) tickets? It makes no sense having the luggage of 5kg and contents of 2kg. The laptop and charger is 2kg already. I have an aluminum checked luggage and I love it, but still hesitate to get a carry on aluminum case. Not to mention, even if I can pack upto 12kg or 15kg, it would be painful to load it to the overhead cabin. In short, how do you cope with these weight issues? Thanks for any tips (if any available).

    I have both the Rimowa Original and Tumi Latitude. I vote Rimowa for carry-on and Tumi for large check-ins. As a frequent traveller of long distance international flights, the Tumi Latitude is absolutely AMAZING. After numerous flights and transits, my luggage has literally zero scuffs. And we know how luggage handlers are in domestics.. they're rough. After 5+ years my Tumi Latitude looks brand new. Way lighter than a Rimowa too -- very important when I'm on extended long trips and expecting to do some shoppping lol. And I can carry all my shoes without worrying about weight!

    Same here; I got the Topas aluminum carry-on case over ten years ago - it's the same look as the current Original - and it's a pleasure to use to this day. I wish they still offered it in a two-wheeled version, though; the big cushy wheels are much better on rougher surfaces (lots of cobblestones here in Norway) and the extra strength makes the case double as a sturdy seat.
    But the spinner cases are great, too. I just bought the Compact size in four-wheeled black aluminum ,and am looking forward to using it for shorter trips, plus it can be stacked on top of the Cabin. The black cases get a really cool look as they wear in, at least in my opinion.
    One thing to note: the Velcro is made that way on purpose, as the idea is to make it less prone to damaging clothing. It works nicely; no snags, yet it holds without coming loose.
    These are probably a waste of money for someone who doesn't travel much, but mine has logged hundreds of flights and I could still sell it for at least what I originally paid for it, so I see it as a free rental. Speaking of purchases I haven't regretted and that hold their value in the long term - sweet Sub!

    For me, I went with the Classic line. I like the looks a little better with the leather touches and also prefer the more square body to the rounded edges of the Original. The locks are also very different and I thought that the Classic style were easier to use although both are fine for use, just a preference. Re: the Velcro - the Velcro isn't strong because it doesn't need to be, this is by design. That strap was designed to keep the compression plates in place and in order to do that, the strap needs to be strong in a lateral direction. You can try this simple test.. connect the strap as normal, and then instead of pulling the hook-side directly away from the loop-side, pull the hook-side laterally along the same axis as the loop-side. You see? Very strong. Another good reason for the specially designed hook-side is that it is less likely to snag on sensitive clothing items such as cashmere sweaters, lace panties, etc. Well done video, my friend! 🤌

There are other luggage manufacturers that offer a lifetime warranty on thier aluminium luggage (away,mvst,sterling pacific) but Rimowa has been around since the 30s. If you offer a lifetime warranty but have only been in business for 3 or 4 years it just doesn't carry the same weight. You could buy this a d never worry about it again.

      It depends on how you travel. Personally, on a carry on I like having at least 1 outside pocket, but it's not a dealbreaker for me (I've arrived at the best carry on being a Billingham Weekender, because it will never bump up against a weight limit, and then the things I would put in an outside pocket just go into my "personal item."). On the checked bag, I prefer the big open case. Those compartments seem useful, but really nothing is as useful as the largest blank space possible. If you need a compartment, you can get a packing cube, but to be as efficient as possible I'll just use a few rolled undershirts lined up as a divider TBH.

However my concern is if Rimowa is a prime/prized target for thieves at the baggage area. I see that some owners paste a ton of stickers/decals on their luggage or paint them. Is this only to stand out or does it deter thieves? Spending big bucks and having it stolen is a lousy option. Anybody had theirs stolen?

      The Classic line is beautiful, but I chose the Original Cabin S because the locks don’t stick out and hopefully are less likely to be knocked about.

    Compared to my Rimowas (18 yo, blue lining, Made in Germany) current makeups are definitely inferior; heft, rivets, liners, etc. Still a good luggage but I wouldn’t pay full retail. Used to b manufactured exclusively in GER and some in Canada but since LVMH took over, I’m not even sure. At the end of the day and if you have the resources, get one and enjoy it. safe travels and see the world. Don’t baby it and let those dents and scratches be part of the memories

    🤔 Does Rimowa "Lifetime Warranty" means the *suitcase's lifetime* or *my lifetime* and is it *transferable* to new owners?

    • @rc3398x
      @rc3398x Před 8 měsíci

      Did you find an answer? My understanding of this is that once it is registered, it is tied to the owner

    • @pohanahawaii
      @pohanahawaii Před 8 měsíci

      @@rc3398x : 🕵 After some research, I think that if it's a "Limited Lifetime Warranty" (like Away) then it covers only the original owner while "Lifetime Warranty" covers the life of the luggage, even if resold. Best to ask/confirm before buying though as imho, that's the only reason to justify a steep onset price.

    Jamey, that Watch is waaaaaaay to BIG for you 6 and a Quarter inch wrist. A 36mm Date just would suit you perfectly a 38mm Explorer will be kinda ok.
    A 6'1 and above skinny guy can get away with a 40mm or 42mm but, at your height it looks unproportional.
    *Also, watches are worn on the left hand and not on the right hand hence the crown is Right Hand Facing.
    Your video and overview of the RIMOWA was informative and helpful and arguably the most comprehensive I seen thus far but the watch was an eyesore but your soft spokenness and overall humility compensated for the oversight.
    You got my Sub, no pun intended and a like.
    Thanks Jamey. God Bless and I wish you a lifetime of happiness with the RIMOWA

    The look is absolutely beautiful, but for me, the practicality is missing some. A lot of times I travel, I purchase things that need to be added to my carry-on, so my carry-on needs to be able to expand. I learned this the hard way with Rimowa. Also, I ended up missing my outside pockets.
    Rimowa is beautiful and very well made, but lacks in some conveniences.

    I love how Rimowa luggage looks, but I would never buy for using as my carry on on the plane. It's simply too heavy. The limit with most of the airliner is 8kg for a carry on suitcase. The Rimowa Classic Cabin 4,3 kg, which leaves only 3,7 kg for you stuff - so unpractical. I could see myself having a larder model to use as a checked in luggage as they are simply gorgeous and sturdy.

    I'm watching this man wearing a Rolex using a Rimowa carry on talking about packing 2 weeks worth of clothes in it, and I'm saying no way because even 2 pairs of dress shoes and 1 suit and you don't have enough room remaining for shirts/pants/underwear for 2 weeks. Now, if it were a Casioak and an Away case I would think, "ok, yeah, he's wearing the same sneakers every day and rolling his t-shirts tight, I can see it."

    I think is more consumerism than anything else, if you have the money go for it, but frankly, those "special features" are nothing that other brands can´t offer me, is just the self-satisfaction of saying " I own a brand suitcase" I get it.

    Nice video, but:
    1. Not flat in both compartments is not an advantage.
    2. Almost two weeks? That must be on the beach or with laundry service. Volume is best described in liters, not days.
    3. Luggage is not an investment, it is an expense.
    More of a sales video than a review.

    haha the colour aluminium colour is low profile in my opinion because there are many of them. They don't even register in my eyes at the airport anymore. Black? If I see black one that'd deserve a nod. Good choice. Picked Tumi over Rimowa in the end way back because the Rimowa handle didn't (don't!) soft close. Side by side I felt my 19 degree tumi is built like a beautiful tank with finese (and soft close handle of course) compare to the Rimowa which was only an armored vehicle. The cheap AWAY alu already have the soft close handle, so the top line Rimowa with the noisy handle wasn't acceptable for me. Also heard story of checked Rimowa with unfixable lock issue... so no rimowa for me right now.
