While in college, I woke up one morning to The Jack of Hearts. Blood on the Tracks became my favorite album. Got married in 1983. Our daughter developed brain cancer, and was treated in Boston until she died at 5 in 1998 after a year. I drove back and forth from Binghamton to and from Boston. Time Out of Mind kept me company. And then, Dylan gifted us with this. My beautiful wife passed away in August. I almost feel like Dylan was a member of my family.

The most remarkable thing about Dylan is that his later writing is as good as his earlier writing. Usually, even the greatest artists are unable to sustain the quality of their early years - they might still produce some really good work but the consistency isn't there. Dylan is the rare exception. He has a unique gift. Many people write well in their early years, but who else has ever sustained it for seven decades?

    • @seanhennessey9869
      @seanhennessey9869 Před rokem

true, agree, however the 80s were pretty much a swale for Bob, I think...except for Jokerman, a few songs....Oh Mercy was good, but man, Under a Red Sky, Knocked Out Loaded, Empire Burlesque, et al, they weren't very consistent, at least i don't think so ....he really seemed to get it together after Man Out of Time, ever since then a nice streak, impressive....

    • @therainman7777
      @therainman7777 Před rokem +4

I mean this is a great song from a great album, but almost no one would claim his later output was truly as good as his output during the 60s. Even Dylan himself, in that famous interview with 60 Minutes (I think) said that he looks back at his music from that time with awe, that he has no idea how he did it, and that he knows he can’t do it anymore. He said he doesn’t even feel like he wrote those songs, like they were just channeled through him. He referenced “It’s Alright Ma” as an example, saying he has no idea how he wrote songs that good and can’t do it anymore. It’s ok, it happens to basically every artist. His new stuff is still very good. But we shouldn’t pretend that Rough And Rowdy is Highway 61 Revisited or Blonde On Blonde.

@@kevanbrown7620 BOTT was always a masterpiece to me. But then when I go back, there were so many under rated albums and songs. My son grew up thinking BOTT was "the Best of Bob Dylan" because it was always in my car, on cassette, and later several CD's that got scratched. But Bob always has something up his sleeve. I wonder if some of these are old, unreleased songs? Along with some new ones? Always a mystery.

    Lyrics:
    McKinley hollered, McKinley squalled
Doctor said, "McKinley, death is on the wall
Say it to me, if you got something to confess"
I heard all about it, he was goin' down slow
I heard it all, the wireless radio
From down in the boondocks, way down in Key West
I'm searching for love, for inspiration
    On that pirate radio station
Coming out of Luxembourg and Budapest
Radio signal, clear as can be
I'm so deep in love that I can hardly see
Down on the flatlands, way down in Key West
Key West is the place to be
    If you're looking for immortality
Stay on the road, follow the highway sign
Key West is fine and fair
If you lost your mind, you will find it there
Key West is on the horizon line
I was born on the wrong side of the railroad track
    Like Ginsberg, Corso and Kerouac
Like Louis and Jimmy and Buddy and all the rest
Well, it might not be the thing to do
But I'm sticking with you, through and through
Down in the flatlands, way down in Key West
I got both my feet planted square on the ground
Got my right hand high with the thumb down
Such is life, such is happiness
Hibiscus flowers, they grow everywhere here
If you wear one, put it behind your ear
Down in the bottom, way down in Key West
Key West is the place to go
Down by the Gulf of Mexico
Beyond the sea, beyond the shifting sand
Key West is the gateway key
    To innocence and purity
Key West, Key West is the enchanted land
I've never lived in the land of Oz
Or wasted my time with an unworthy cause
It's hot down here, and you can't be overdressed
China blossoms of a toxic plant
They can make you dizzy, I'd like to help you but I can't
Down in the flatlands, way down in Key West
Well, the fish tail ponds and the orchid trees
They can give you that bleeding heart disease
People tell me I ought to try a little tenderness
    On Newton Street, Bayview Park
Walking in the shadows after dark
Down under, way down in Key West
    I played Gumbo Limbo spirituals
I know all the Hindu rituals
People tell me that I'm truly blessed
Bougainvillea blooming in the summer, in the spring
Winter here is an unknown thing
Down in the flat lands, way down in Key West
Key West is under the sun, under the radar, under the gun
You stay to the left, and then you lean to the right
Feel the sunlight on your skin, and the healing virtues of the wind
Key West, Key West is the land of light
Wherever I travel, wherever I roam
I'm not that far before I come back home
I do what I think is right, what I think is best
History Street off of Mallory Square
Truman had his White House there
East bound, West bound, way down in Key West
Twelve years old, they put me in a suit
Forced me to marry a prostitute
There were gold fringes on her wedding dress
That's my story, but not where it ends
She's still cute, and we're still friends
Down on the bottom, way down in Key West
I play both sides against the middle
Trying to pick up that pirate radio signal
I heard the news, I heard your last request
Fly around, my pretty little Miss
I don't love nobody, give me a kiss
Down on the bottom, way down in Key West
Key West is the place to be
    If you're looking for immortality
    Key West is paradise divine
Key West is fine and fair
If you lost your mind, you'll find it there
Key West is on the horizon line

Key West is both a real place and a Shangri-la - the place where we go to escape. The cleverness of this dreamy reflective song is that it works on both levels.

    • @keithcrooks7217

Your assessment is rather reductive; the song works on many different levels and it is more than merely clever. It represents the zenith of his art - a (long) lifetime spent perfecting his craft.

Mark H - I just posted my comment yesterday and now reading through all the comments i think it has similarities to your idea...here is the comment i just posted : I get the feeling that Key West and the people and places mentioned in this song are part of a 'lost era' of America. An America that could have been. An America that was slowly being eroded away from the beginning of the 20th century and was truly lost after the murder of JFK. Key West is the 'land of light', 'innocence and purity' 'the enchanted land'. After JFK's murder (it was 'like a human sacrifice') the 'age of the Antichrist' began. The 'soul of a nation been torn away', going 'into a slow decay' now it's 'thirty-six hours past judgement day'. Key West is at once a real place and a mythical place in the mind of the philosoher pirate, a truth seeker and free thinker from the 'wrong side of the railroad tracks'. A place to seek inspiration and love. A retreat, a hiding place, a refuge from the Land Of Oz, Babylon, the ever encroaching post-modern soulless new world where you will lose your mind. Key West, a place where his heroes, predecessors and now dead contemporaries live on and which he will never abandon even it 'might not be the thing to do' ('i'm sticking with you, through and through') because he has his 'feet planted square on the ground'. Key West is the philosoher pirate's Elysian Fields.

I've known for years that the man is a genius and yet this record still staggers me. The sheer depth of the compositions, the musicality. How can this man write so many extraordinary songs? Key West is so moving, so rich with emotion. People one day will be jealous of us for living at the same time as Bob Dylan.

2013. My wife and I honeymooned in Key West as we tried to get pregnant (and did). As I pulled up to our room one night the resort sign said "we welcome our special guest Bob Dylan" I had brought my guitar with so I sat outside all night playing his songs just hoping. Who knows, maybe he was too busy wringing this. Of course we named our daughter Dylan.
