    I think you need a bit more pressure at the back tyre with heavy rear panniers. The Marathon Plus has been the benchmark in the UK touring scene for decades. I have the 32s and they are incredible. They just last forever. I have messed around with some of their other tyres, but they pale in feel.

    I use the Schwalbe Almotion. It's tubeless ready.

    Would a 28 mm tire do well for touring? Thing is, the Triban RC 500 sports these on 28 spoke wheels and I am kinda dubious as the Triban is marketed as a touring bike.

    The range cruisers look very similar to Duro Sierra 700 x 35c that I currently use. Since you like Schwalbe so much why not try their X-One All around with the tan sidewalls - they're more in the same thread pattern as the WTBs. Other recommendations are the Continental Cyclocross Speed (35c) as well as the Panaracer Comet HardPack (38c). Cheers

      Cause the schwalbe One tire lineup is more orientated towards gravel racing, not endurance. Puncture protection is alright, but nothing for really heavy loads and shitty asphalt

      Duh - because marathons last thousands of miles longer and actually work. The other brands sound a bit new world.

  • @BPonTour

    The Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour has a pretty good rolling resistance. Just ensure that you've got enough pressure on. In my experience, it rolles best somewhere around 5.5 bar. I've also never had a single puncture while I had them ( 42-622 (28 x 1.60, 700x40C)). The rear tire will be worn down roughly twice as fast as the front tire depending on how much weight you put on your bike. Also, they're loosing grip if you go off-road. As long as the dirt path is dry and doesn't have huge amounts of loose sand you should be fine. Try to avoid gravel roads that have the large and chunky type of gravel.

    • @SC-hk6ui
      @SC-hk6ui Před 3 lety

      I think 5.5 bar is an insane pressure. Did you just decide that on your own, or did you calculate it based upon your weight. I would probably need to be pulling 400lbs to go up to that pressure in 40c's !!!! It is the maddest pressure I have ever heard of. Use an online calculator. You are losing grip and wearing unevenly because you have not thought fully about the tyre pressure. Conjecture on you marathons is up the garden path.

      @BPonTour Před 3 lety

      @@SC-hk6ui Someone from a bicycle shop put that pressure on. Mostly because I was riding with equipment (tent, cooking supplies etc.) and I never changed it after getting used to it. But then I was mainly riding paved bike paths.

    • @SC-hk6ui
      @SC-hk6ui Před 3 lety

      @@BPonTour I'm certain you'll feel better grip and traction if you drop it down a bit. My 32s play up a bit under higher pressures around 70 psi and they are the same tyre. I think the sweet spot for the welsh mountain roads was about 60psi when I was around 14 stone. All the best and happy trails :-)

      @@SC-hk6ui Thx, but due to various reasons I had to get a new bike and somehow ended up with a G-One All Round 35-622. I'm not nearly as impressed with that one as I was with the marathon plus tour. So, I'm currently considering switching back even if that means more weight.

    Question... How would any of these tires compare to the serfas drifter ?

    • @SC-hk6ui
      @SC-hk6ui Před 3 lety

      Marathon plus is the best tyre even developed for touring. Never even heard of serfas. They are some sort of rebranded eastern tyre. You must be on a serious budget to be looking at them. My guess is indonesian labour and no quality control, probably not road legal, untested, and without product conformity or quality testing. Are you having a laugh!

      @@stevevinas I reckon the Marathon plus are fairly um indestructable. That said - sorry to hear yours failed. I think a lot of their range I would not bother with but the Greenguard looks good to me. It is about £20 right now each. So a massive saving on the Plus which I think comes in at £35. And from what I've read - they are the go to choice right now for highway touring.

      The tires he mentioned I would call them more City Urban Commuting tires not real "Touring". The right choice IMO would be the Schwalbe Marathon Mondial Evo DD foldable. I used for a long time the Marathon XR and replaced them with those Mondials on my Norwid touring bike. They are simply awesome, lighter than the XR better rolling but rugged like the XR.

      @@brokenspine66 I used those extensively when I began touring..crazy harsh looking back in the now from my experience. I feel like tire quality has advanced to the point such heavy hard tires aren't needed anymore.

      @@michaelviglianco6121 There is always a evolution going on. I have a custom 26" Norwid Touring/Trekking/Expedition Bike for 25 years now, I frequently changed/updated/upgraded some parts over the years. I started out with wire bead Marathon XR always 2" wide for a long time than transitioned to a mordernized updated foldable XR version with DD they were lighter more supple but equal durable. After those I switched to the successor to the famed XR the foldable Marathon Mondial Evo DD they are even better. Every step an improvenment , in 25 years I got less than a handfull flats at all and I use this bike for everything commuting grocery runs and touring. I was never a fan of those Marathon Plus and its variations because they are so heavy and harsh.
