      Mickxal Not with the 6.4 and 6.0 they have far too common issues that aren't owner fault. You shouldn't have to dealer proof an expensive diesel truck for it to run right. How ever the new 6.7s are on par power/reliability wise with cummins and duramax.

    I run a welding truck in alberta, and all of the company trucks are dodges. I have repeatedly cold started my truck everyday in -50 C. These Cummins are just pure beast mode all the time. We had a bad cold snap this past winter where it dipped it -55C plus a windchill bringing it down to a frosty -67C in camp. We literally fueled the truck at the end of the 12 hour work day, parked it in camp, and left it running all night, because there was no access to the parking rail. Came out at 545am the next morning and she was still running all nice and toasty inside coolant at operating temp. Drove to the gas station and filled her up cuz it burned 3/4 tank just idling. Did this for 4 days in a row. As in the truck did not shut off for 4 wholedays. Got home from that rotation and promt;y traded in my 2012 Hemi 1500 for a Ram 3500 Laramie. Never been happier with a vehicle.

      B______ F________ I have to disagree. diesels hate cold weather. they are compression ignition and do not have spark plugs like a gas engine does, which means a cold engine will barely produce enough heat to ignite diesel fuel, which also has a much higher flash point than gas too. plus they are higher compression requiring more juice from the starter to overcome the force. and cold weather eats batteries especially at -35. don't even get me started on diesel fuel gelling.

    • @ketjuariittaa
      @ketjuariittaa Před 7 lety +7

      B______ F________ In Finland we have winter diesel that have geling point -38 celsius ~-36F so most use densin motored cars. They are better in winter. Trucks are on diesel but they have gas heaters to overcome the cold issue.

No-one shuts off their cars when shopping or at the theater or anything unless there are plug-ins available. My '01 Dodge 2500 4x4 V-10 I bought from a woman in the Air Force when she transferred back the America, she had installed a recirculating heater, engine and transmission oil pan heaters, a strip heater on the power steering fluid reservoir, battery blanket and I installed a small trickle charger for my battery. The lights practically dimmed when I plugged it in, but my baby always started for me. :)

      Because the oil is too thick and the crankshaft drags through it. This puts more load on the starter and takes more current to get the desired cranking RPM as well. Plus when the truck starts, it takes awhile to get oil throughout the motor.

      giberish9 I still say if you live in Alaska, Canada or a any of the northern states you should be running a 5W-40 or 0W-40 full synthetic (especially for newer turbo diesels 5 years and younger). The synthetic isn't that much more and it is much easier on the oil pump in cold weather and is quicker to reach top end of the motor in very low temps.
      Also if you're away from electricity sources you can't always plug in your diesel in which case a 0W-40 synthetic is gonna make it much easier to crank a cold diesel motor.

    I had a Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins a few years back that I bought new and always had serviced on schedule. When I bought the truck, I was assured that "the engine will go 300,000 miles" without a problem. Which it probably would have done, if the rest of the truck didn't start falling apart, including the dash which was cheap, rigid plastic that broke away in huge chunks.
    When I traded it (around 80,000 miles), the transmission was having issues, and being a 4x4 was going to cost thousands of dollars to repair. I'm sure they have improved their quality since then, but man, I loved that truck. I would still have it today if everything else on it was built as well as that engine.

Although if you can afford the sudden down time brought upon by a head gasket failure it makes a lot of sense to fix it after it breaks. You can usually limp your truck home with a head gasket failure. So not like you'll be sitting on the side of the road. It really comes down to a judgment call.

Can of a pain to crawl under it but the thing started so easy with the warm oil. The entire pan was warm to touch. With just running the block heater the bottom of the pan was still cold. Since heat rises the block heater just doesn't get down deep in the very bottom of the pan and warm the oil. Running the magnetic heater in combo took care of that and since in sticks to the very bottom of the pan the heat went right where is was suppose too.

    Is anybody surprised that a pretty new car can startup in the cold? It's a struggle if you've got an old car with worn battery

      +Re If it isn't carb'd it should start. Batteries are cheap to replace and going into winter with a dying battery is just silly. Old cars will start just fine if you know how to do basic maintenance

      Josephuskikit Fred Not with that attitude. Get a little torch rocking under the oil pan and you're set. Possibly.
      I've also used the blowdryer/heat gun in intake trick

      Adam Gipe agreed on that one. Worthless front ends junk transmissions and a body that rots off in 3 years makes a very worthless truck
