    ➤Cities Skylines Industries:
    In one of the most in-depth expansions in Cities: Skylines history, Industry becomes a larger and more meaningful part of the game with this expansion. Players can customize their industrial areas with supply chains for the four different resource types and unique factories. Well managed industry areas will level up and become more efficient. Aside from production chains, there is a new city service for handling mail and the cargo airport eases import and export of factory goods. There are FIVE new maps, new policies, new city services, new buildings (including resource extractors, manufacturers, warehouses and unique factories) and more.
    Key Features:
    - MAKE IT HAPPEN
    Follow your products from harvesting to processing, storage and production, then transport them to commercial zones or export to other cities.
    - CAPTAIN YOUR OWN INDUSTRIES
    Define an area with the industry area tool and place highly specialized industrial buildings to build and manage the production chain from raw material extraction up to final end product. Industry Areas are divided into four types based on the natural resource they are processing: Farming, Forest, Ore and Oil. These areas can level up upon reaching productions goals and staffing requirements.
    - BUILD IT UP, BUTTERCUP
    New industrial buildings include Extractors, Warehouse Facilities, Processing and Auxiliary Buildings, Industrial Props and Roads. Unique Factories, such as Food, Toy, Furniture, Car and Electronics produce luxury products, and require a large number of workers, water and electricity as well as input from your industries.
    - GO POSTAL
    Boost your citizens’ well-being with mail delivery and collection services. Post sorting facilities handle mail between outside connections and the post offices, and new Post Van and Truck vehicles enable the carriage.

    Speed limits on roundabouts also help a lot. Especially if they use highway roads, the cars on the roundabout are so fast that cars standing at the junction don't have a chance to enter. Limiting speed in the roundabout to 50 kph solves this nicely.

    another idea is to use a bridge, so those who want to go straight on, don't have to stop at all. You surely already do this for highways, but you could use a similar way inside your city, with a tiny bridge and separate lanes making sort of a mini clover leave junction, which work great. Great video though with a deep dive into several junctions and how they perform

In my ~80k city there is only one roundabout, but looking at the traffic, road layout and available space - there should be another 10 roundabouts to make the flow smoother. In other, bigger cities they prefer to put massive, 4-6 lanes near-junction roads and traffic lights with green light phases so short that only 10-15 cars can go through. If there are trams on the same road, it is even worse than that.

Where I lived, the entire area was one big grid for the major roads (the neighborhoods were more organic), and there were no roundabouts anywhere. All of the major roads had timed traffic lights, and the traffic wasn't all that bad. Roundabouts are only really necessary when there is a major chokepoint, but if there are multiple ways to get to the same place, traffic lights are fine.

      @@thany3 You´re right (so much so that the only example I can think of is in Stockholm), but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not a good idea, even if it's uncommon, and vice versa. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the biggest fan of cloverleaves either, but there might be instances where it could be useful. Also, any road can be used as a motorway, even if it's not classified as a "motorway road" in-game, as long as it has all the properties of a motorway (i.e. no zoning, no at-level pedestrian crossings, no at-level right turns (left turns in RHT), no traffic lights, high speed limits, etc).

      I used to play it. But the unrealistic lane switching on the highways caused me so much trouble and work that I lost interest completely. Now if that was a realistic problem, like in real life, I would have like the challenge but you only spend hours on what is basically a fault in the game its self. People don't stand in a 10 mile traffic jam all in the middle lane while they are on a 5 lane highway.. That's no funn at all. Maybe one day they manage to fix that problem and I'll come back. Its a great game if you can look away from the lane switching problem..

    Nicely done examples. :)
    A couple of other good ones:
    - Divergent Diamond Interchange
    - I don't know the name, but there's one that's basically the opposite of the last example you showed. In this one, the central intersection is only used by cars going straight, and the lights just alternate between the two directions. There are then 2-way diagonal roads at all four corners. The cars turning left have a dedicated lane and turn left across a small intersection onto the diagonal road before reaching the central intersection. The cars turning right do the same. This works really well, but the downside is it uses a lot of land.

    Something else you could do verging on an actual interchange is use the slip lanes to go right so the only actual traffic going through is turning left. Doing lane math you''d be 3+3, then right slips off and on, 2+2, bypass for straight overs (one set over, one set underground), 1+1 at the intersection and, if large enough area, you could roundabout that with a simple 1 lane one-way. Vanilla fix and may even get away without putting in a traffic light or stop sign.

    When I went to college a few cities over, years ago, there was an intersection not far from the train station and of course one of the connecting roads immediately followed by a railway crossing.
    Every morning I walked from station to college, the traffic was jammed and people (logistical masterminds as they are) blocking that intersection and the railway crossing, delaying the train network as well.
    All of it can be avoided if folks put in a little more awareness and simply wait _before_ the intersection and the crossing, until the road ahead is cleared.
    Some notes for people trying for a drivers license:
    *NEVER* stop, stand still, park or overtake on:
    1) Intersections
    2) Railway crossings
    3) Bridges
    It's how most of traffic accidents happen, because impatience and awareness don't go well together.

      Fabulous Video! At the end of the vid, you asked for other suggestions: Some I mentioned above, but I think the following would be useful: How to lay out Industry, Residential and Commercial successfully, Motorway intersections (with 3 exits, 4 exits and 5 exits), Best intersections & ones to avoid! (cloverleaf, trumpet, stacked Interchange etc). How to apply lane mathematics successfully, How to set-up roundabouts properly. Building car-parks in your city. How to lay Metro, trains, (cargo, intercity!). I personally always struggle when using elevation in my city, so some tips on how to build retaining walls and elevate roads on top of them, as I always end up with a mess!

    I'm a huge fan of treating traffic flow like fluid dynamics. You can also double the lanes and half the speed and get the same throughput as before. Or the other way around - half the lanes and double the escape speed. Still works just as well.

    A suggestion that i see a lot in my city and also use a lot in the cities i build is never allowing cars to turn left in the junction. If the surroundings is something of a grid, you can make them go straight and turn right twice on the next block, then put a give way sign or timed traffic lights depending on the flow, but in the critical junction you can make it only 2 steps on the lights (well, 3 because i like to have a pedestrian exclusive seconds, because if you don't do this they YOLO and decrease the flow crossing between the cars). It's also very realistic.

    Few ideas:
    1. Roundabouts vs. traffic islands (there are videos on CZcams that explain the difference but would be cool to see it in Cities Skylines context).
    2. Two-highway roundabout with bypasses (ie two highways meet at a crossroads, you add a roundabout at ground level, a flyover for one of the highways and a tunnel for the other so everyone has a straight-through option).
    3. Teaville suggestion: Make a golf course somehow?? You'd need to fake the fairways/greens/bunkers somehow but with trees lining the fairways and park paths winding through, I think it could look pretty convincing and make an empty space look really interesting.

    • @bobblebardsley
      @bobblebardsley Před 4 lety

      Also if you're doing a whole series of deep dive videos, you could do a whole video about speed limits and how they affect the cars' routing decisions, how they affect ease of access for traffic joining roundabouts, who does and doesn't take a bypass etc. How to improve roundabout traffic flow, how to encourage more cars to take the highway around your city instead of smaller roads through the middle, that kinda thing.

    When you use the bypass lane/bridge, you also want to make the junction only left and right turns for that road, force the cars to use the bridge if they want to go straight.

    For vanilla players on roundabouts : you can use a bigger road (or asymetrical 2+1 if you have the mass transit dlc) to have 2 lanes leaving the roundabout at at least one of the juctions ; there will be a dedicated turning lane so the roundabout won't be blocked !

Knowledge is what I am seeking, not entertainment. But of course presentation is important. Your's matches my expectations very well (unlike a couple of other CZcamsr's) Thanks
    I am newish to C:S. The thing I have most trouble with is: Network builds, especially slopes and curves. That trick of adding, then removing, a junction to get another node was a true revelation. I use MoveIt, Fine Road Tool and Fine Road Anarchy, or I should say I fiddle around with. An in depth covering building believable transportation networks would really assist me. I pick up clues from your videos in passing (like the fact you can't have 45 degree angles in metro), but an in depth coverage would be great. Keep up the good work.

    A common issue i noticed when you join a two-lane road into a 3 lane roundabout is, that by the game defaults the left lane entering is used by traffic going to the left and the middle lane of the roundabout. Just using the lane connector and dedicating the left lane to the left lane and let the traffic going to the middle and the right roundabout-lane share the right entering-lane usally improves performance because it combines the two roundabout-lanes with the least cross-traffic while entering instead of combining the lanes with the most.

    • @Solus749
      @Solus749 Před 4 lety

      @@Sarteth it is better to use ingame options over mods honestly, because if you need a mod for a game to work isn't it a mechanical issue the game should have solutions to on their own. As for Pr, It is a bit of work but can you detatch the mono rail from the road with a monorail only section? A bypass road to divert traffic away from the section in question might work too.
      You should have atleast 2 ways in and out of every area for cars not counting walk paths as well as public transport. The less need for the cars to be there the better and if there is need give them secondary options to avoid massive overload.

    • @Jack-yv3po
      @Jack-yv3po Před 4 lety

      @@Solus749 But the game doesn't have solution to a lot of problems on it's own - Vanilla traffic lights are pretty bad, vanilla roundabouts just don't work like a real roundabout should.
      There are many road choices people would like but don't exist.
      Without mods traffic isn't an issue because vehicles just delete themselves.
      A bypass road is only really good if you use mods to force people to use the bypass or edit speed limits to provide incentive for the AI to use it.

    Loved this concept! What I'm struggling with most right now is figuring out how to get roads to look the way I want them to. I finally figured out how to work the parallel roads tool (at least somewhat!), but I can not for the life of me figure out the fine road tools mod that supposedly will let me pick so many more details of the roads. Also, I see you using some tools to fix the elevation on the roads, and I swear I managed to do that! Once. And never again since then. Oh, and ALSO also... how in the name of Hugo do you get your ramps looking so nice and smooth? I know I've seen you do it a dozen times or more, but I just... can't work it out for myself. I go through and manually lift nodes instead, which makes them at least not look like staircases (like the bridge in the last fix-it episode), but... I want those gentle slopes, man.
    So... I guess what I'm saying is... I adore the traffic management you're so well known for, but if you ever wanted to just do a deep dive in how to make your roads more aesthetically pleasing, I would 100% drink it all up like a nice cup of tea. :-)
