"Ain't No Way" is a song written by singer-songwriter Carolyn Franklin and sung by her elder sister Aretha Franklin as the B-side to her 1968 hit, "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone". This song should not be confused with a different song of the same title, recorded by Aretha Franklin on her 2003 CD So Damn Happy: "Ain't No Way" by Barry J. Eastmond and Gordon Chambers.
Written by Carolyn Franklin, her sister Aretha recorded the song and released it on her acclaimed Lady Soul album. Released as the B-side of her top-five hit single, "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone", the song peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 9 on the Hot R&B Singles Chart in 1968. Carolyn and members of the Sweet Inspirations performed backing vocals on the track. The Sweet Inspirations' founder Cissy Houston showcased her operatic like upper range during Franklin's bridges and the ending of the track.
In 1974 Shirley Brown recorded an outtake cover of the track in her album Woman to Woman. [1] In 1983, Whitney Houston made her world debut on Merv Griffin Show singing the tune with mother Cissy Houston.[2] Whitney performed the track several times during her 1994 U.S. Bodyguard World Tour. In 1997, she performed it live on her 1997 HBO special, Classic Whitney Live from Washington, D.C., and the 1999 VH-1 Divas Live special as a duet with Mary J. Blige.
In 2005, Blige covered the track as a duet with Patti LaBelle off LaBelle's Classic Moments album, with their version peaking at number 18 on the R&B charts. LaBelle had performed the song as a tribute to Franklin at the Essence Awards in 1994.
Christina Aguilera performed the song to great acclaim in a tribute to Aretha during the 53rd Grammy Awards. Also, Amber Riley, who portrays Mercedes Jones in Glee, covered the song for the show. In 2011, Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart covered the song in their collaborative album, Don't Explain. In 2013, singer Sasha Allen performed the song in The Voice. In December 2017, singer Demi Lovato covered the song for Spotify Singles[3].
In 2017, British Hip-Hip group Corners sampled the song in their track of the same name on their debut album, “Corners”.

She did that perfomance at the age of 60. My L O R D.
Ikr... And she's 80 now and still have that VOICE now that's what you call singing😩👌🏼
Not patti singing the background Adlibs standing in the front lol gotta love her!!
Even though Patti voice was damaged at this point, she still gave me chills. Patti is the queen of show stopping live performances. Patti does not need to be half naked and talking about sex to entertain. She is a true legend and class act.
How does your soul not move when that woman sangs. She puts emotion into every note she belts. You cannot pre-record that😁
Because loud ugly noises does not appeal to most sane people.
@@hinderless5811Here come a hating evil Wicked Aretha dead Franklin fan, HE STAY MAD AND JELOUS, AND HE IS STALKER ON MOST OF PATTI LABELLE PAGES, HE WON'T SHOW HIS IDENTITY, THAT SHOULD TELL HOW MUCH OF A PUNK HE TRULY IS?! HE TRY TO CRITICIZE HER WHILE HE HIDES BEHIND FAKE PICTURE THAT SHOULD YOU EVERYTHING ABOUT IT?! 🤔🤔🤔
Destroying 5th octave like nobody😘
1:08 Did she just hit Ms.Cissy's notes too? Omg-- all hail the QUEEN!
skepchica 1:13 is your answer
@@winterrose8691 Actually 3:28 is ;)
Nobody hits Cissys original notes, her soprano was the best, especially in the Atlantic recording studio on Aint No Way, it cannot be matched, just as Arethas lead vocal cannot be matched, no matter how much these so-called singers scream and yell.
@@markdrinkwater1508 HATER ALERT LOL
@@patgorden5002 I don't hate Patti Labelle, I have seen her show, I've watched her roll in the dirt, I love her as a singer and as an entertainer, her voice in its prime is out of sight in terms of the power and the dramatic way in which she used it, the long twisting notes and elongated range and operatic whoops, I love it all. I am just saying that her soprano does not compare to Cissy Houstons heavenly sound on the recording of Aint No Way, and Patti's lead vocal can never compare to Aretha Franklins in terms of soul and beautiful expression and perfect pitch and tone, which makes her voice resonate like no other.
Patti said stay in the back I don’t want you to sing I’m not gonna let you sing but do your thang heffa good luck and may the hunger games begin girlfriend
Dexter was doing the most. It was low key kind of disrespectful. She was trting to sing over Patti in the beginning.
@@ajaycbaby8837maybe that's what Patti wanted. Her arrangement with Marry Griffin was similar. Very aggressive call and response. Patti is not intimidated by anyone so she can pull this style off
Just so amazing no one can copy her style
patti was the back up singer as well !❤️
Hahahahaha aa hahahahaha
Right...I was like whose singing lead again 😂😂
patty is the best singer of all time thank you for youre music

She really went for it that night. Damn. Head voice into the stratosphere, and the power was in full effect. She might’ve been horse, but she powered through it like a true Legend.
That Bb5 (I guess) note at 3:21 resonated across the damn Milky Way Galaxy! Mama Patti always delivers! Bravo!
She was killing those B5s.
Best aint no way performance ever,
Miss Patti delivered legendary vocals along with those football-karate kicks!!
That's how she got into the next octave.
Nothing and nobody could ever come close to Patti and Whitney, ever ever eva EVA

Jeez!!! One of my fave singers always
That leg went off!!
That back ground singer got fired yeah? Stealing the spot light lmao
She sounded horrible with all that vibrato. Dexter was getting on my last nerve. Tracy was killing it too. I would like to hear more from Tracy.
Act a damn fool on that stage!!!!!!!!!!
My favorite diva
Patti! Patti!! Patti!!
She is one of the greatest of all time!
Ain't no way
For me to love you
If you won't let me
It ain't no way
For me to give you all you need
If you won't let me give all of me
I know that a woman's duty
Is to help and love a man
And that's the way
It was planned
Oh but how can I, how can I, how can I
Give you all the things I can
If you're tying both of my hands?
Oh ho, it ain't no way
(Ain't no way)
It ain't no way
(Ain't no way)
It just ain't no way, baby
(Ain't no way)
Ain't no way, baby
(Ain't no way)
It ain't no way
For me to love you
If you won't let me
Stop trying to be
Someone you're not
Hard, cold and cruel is a man
Who paid too much for what he got
And if you need me
Like you say, say you do
Oh then please, please
Please don't you know that I need you?
Oh, it ain't no way
I tell you that it ain't no way
It ain't no way, it ain't no way, baby, no
It just ain't no way
It sure ain't no way
It ain't no way for me to love you
If you won't let me
Ain't no way
If you won't let me
Ain't no way
YES DAMMIT! SING!!!
love this live so so much!
Always delivers
Yes Patti, EAT ❤️💪🏽
Patti!! Amazing Queen!
Here come Patti LaBelle and all are octaves lol a black woman sketch show
Only Patti
Dexter was getting on my nerve. I was like girl shut up. This is Patti's performance not yours. I was so happy when Patti said sing Tracy and Dexter finally shut up. 😁
Hahahhahha....true lol
LMAOOOOO
It's actually Pattis arrangement for the song where the background does lead and then they both get aggressive
Voz abençoada
Os anos passaram e ela só melhorou
God bless her soul, tjoooo 🥵
Lord Jesus yasss
💖💯
Of course she sounds amazing. However, I'm not so crazy about the arrangement. The back up sings were actually given melodic lines of the song while Patti went off rifting into the stratosphere. It sounded like confusion during the points. I've seen her sing this better live, but she was still great here.
This wasn't her regular background vocalist at this time was problem #1. And this same arrangement was done with her former long time background vocalist Mary Griffin who did it at a GMA central park performance and killed it together.
WTF YOU TALKING ABOUT?!😂😂😂
00:47 Great backup singer
No
As a background singer Dexter overstepped her boundaries. She was trying to sing all the leads until Patti told Tracy to sing. Dexter had way to much vibrato for this song. Her voice did not sound good singing it. Dexter tried Patti in 60's because Patti's voice was damaged, but she would not have been able to try Patti in her 50's because Patti's voice was still in good condition. Dexter just rubbed me the wrong way. I never listened to Dexter sing again after this performance. No one disrespects my Patti.
Anybody else see the dude from Tyler Perry , Terrell Carter singing backup ?
👐🏿
Joseph Collins amen
Mia❤😂😢😮😅😊
Starts off as the lead then becomes the back up and soprano singer
Is that male background singer on the left the guy actor in Tyler Perry movie?
Yes
Como é nome dessa vocal que canta junto com ela pelo amor de Deus me falem?
se chama Terry Dexter
@ Obrigaduuuu.Nossa a Patty canta muito, mas essa vocal meu Deus que voz em.
😱🙉🤯😵😲😳OMG, I have got to be dreaming, is this cannot be right here, I have to be hearing s***, because not only did she hit the second, Cissy Houston high note, @3:23, but I no full, and God darn well, that that Gotdurn Heffa, did not hit that Mariah Carey whistle, without even noticing or trying to, lawd have mercy, now that's a bad mother shut your mouth, right there, can't nobody touch that👱🏾♀️🎤🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌 she has only two grammys, why Aretha has 20 something, Diana has a whole lot, like that is so crazy, she's never ever so over 10 million records of one album, and that is absolutely heart-wrenching, and when people say that they love Patti LaBelle, and she's our favorite singer, I gotta wonder do they really, because why doesn't she have the same support as her peers?, or the same stat says, the only reason she's even rich, is because she's always toward non-stop, That's Why They Call Her the Godmother of Soul, the hardest working woman is so business, because they gave her the name as the female James Brown, and that's why even to date she probably signed on a years tour, and that's a God darn shame, and so she's rich, and it's from her voice, but it's from working like a dog, is not from selling albums, and winning a lot of awards, so that she could not owe any record companies any money, and charge more in order to do her show, so she drove accepted whatever she can make, and then she just made her shows her career, and never ever ever stopped doing shows all year long, and literally at first it was to pay the bills, she had earned enough to move into a mini mansion, and she had to pay those bills, and then when she was able to pay the house off, sell it and buy a real mansion, it was about being able to live the lifestyle she deserve, but truthfully she never got that rich, to where she can do the things like Aretha Franklin or Diana ross, until the late 90s, because she never would have made it financially, to the level of Aretha and them, had she not have worked herself like a dog, I bet you even right now, she's already signed up to go on tour for a year, and she doesn't have to do all of that long touring, or at all anymore, like she might not got everything she deserved of getting, as far as Awards and things like that, but she's definitely, they sure that she is just as financially comfortable, and Rich, as all of the rest of them are, she only doing them now because she loves to be with her audience, but that was the only way that she was considered a star, and the only way that she was able to make money, unlike her counterparts, and that's a shame before God.
Correction, something Diana Ross never won the Grammy they did present a Grammy to her a few years ago but she never won a Grammy.
@@patgorden5002 I don't type, I speak text, and it gets my words wrong sometime, and changes it to what it think it should be, I was saying that Aretha has over 20 Grammys, and her Talent is not on a scale, that's different from Patti LaBelle's, so I'm not taking anything from her, not adding, and then Diana Ross, is a huge pop star, so she's work alike I think 240 million alone, because of the fact that she's had in the music industry, but her voice is nothing like Patti LaBelle's, back in the day, they called it crossing over, today is called pop, all that means is that instead of selling records in the US only, you sold them in Europe as well, that's what makes you pop or crossover, which is so weird, because back in the day during the British Invasion, they did not achieve such high success, unless they crossed over to the American audience, is really really weird when you think about it, but you're right no giganta has no Grammys, but even she should have a few, and Patti should have at least 5 to 10
@@charlesjeffery1155 Believe me I understand where you coming from I do the same thing so no judgment here you have me laughing so loud because I do the same thing you doing.🤣😂🤣 much love and respect.💯
Does anyone know why that backup singer kept singing the lead?
I believe that's how they had the arrangement done and then, Patti comes back in and take over...
It was a duet on the album with Mary J Blige so I think they were trying to the duet version. But Patti really didn’t need this to be a duet lol.
Terrell Carter, Terry, Who are the other vocalist???
Jonathan Piper II she said Tracy :/
Tara Dexter
1:23,1:14, 1:17
Amazing but the background vocals were too dominant. It was making it sound messy
gorgeous voice, gorgeous woman, dreadful wig lol
Can't nobody do it like Aretha though
Sorry Aretha, Etta, Withney, Mariah but Patti is the N°1..
Don't be ridiculous, Aretha is supreme.
@@markdrinkwater1508 you sound ridiculous Aretha couldn't ever and that's real!
@@patgorden5002 Arethas voice is simply the greatest voice, nobody else comes close, whatever decade, whether her voice was on form or whether it was rough, she was just the best. The resonance in her perfect pitch and tone on the Atlantic studio recordings from 1967 to 1970 have never been equaled, her gospel singing can never be surpassed, her concert voice, even through to just a few years before she passed, when she was riddled with cancer, her voice was just out of sight. All other singers eat the crumbs that fall from the Queens table.
@@patgorden5002 Just ask Patti..
@@markdrinkwater1508 there is no need
Why would he say
“when I heard this I got out my hot-comb”
Doesn’t that sound alittle racist .. just 💯
Ain’t no way Terry Dextor out singing patti for the part lmfao
Patti said oh you wanna sing my part ima sing yours better than you lmfao
