Trigger Finger Surgery

  • www.handandwris... - Of all of the conditions that can affect the hand, trigger finger is among the most common. As with many conditions of the fingers, it is typically caused and exacerbated by repetitive activity such as typing or text messaging, although it is not limited to these activities alone. Trigger finger most commonly affects the ring finger, but it not uncommon in any of the digits of the hand, and it typified by a snapping of the finger, accompanied with pain.
Trigger finger affects the flexor tendons, which control flexion of the finger; that is to say, they pull the fingertips into the hand towards the palm. These tendons can develop nodules, or knots, which then become stuck on the pulley bands that normally keep them in position against the finger bones. In particularly bad cases, the nodules can become so large that the tendon is unable to pass through the pulley at all, making it impossible to flex or extend the finger, depending on the position when it becomes stuck.
Conservative treatment of trigger finger consists of cortisone injection, which can be an effective remedy in up to 50% of occurrences. Should this injection prove ineffective then surgery may be necessary. The procedure is a simple one, and only requires local anesthesia. A small incision is made in the affected finger(s), through which the pulley band upon which the knotted tendon is caught is sliced, freeing the tendon to return to its standard mobility. The wound is then closed and sewn shut with three to four stitches. Mobility returns to the finger almost immediately.
A light dressing will be placed over the wound, and this must be kept dry for ten days, after which time the stitches are taken out by the doctor, and light activity may be resumed. By about four weeks, any tenderness at the scar site should resolve, and full function returns. It is not uncommon to see trigger finger occur in different digits of the same hand at different times, although recurrence is extremely unlikely in the same digit.

I am a retired horticulturist. I have a trigger middle finger that I’ve had for at least 15 years. It came from repetitive use of that finger to dig small holes for 6 pack flower planting jobs instead of using a tool to get the jobs done faster. It has not hurt but it is worse from time to time and I have to sometimes manually open it -it gets stuck. I have an appt soon with an orthopedic surgeon to fix it. I don’t want cortisone shots , I just want it fixed with surgery because it is a huge annoyance when cooking , crocheting and general everyday activities. I’m just sick of it, so I’m strongly going for the surgery. Wish me luck!

@@philwhitt6462 , no Phil, I did not. But over the years, I had cortisone in an elbow, a shoulder and a knee. The elbow and shoulder eventually needed surgery. The cortisone gave encouraging effects at first but eventually were ineffective. There was a lot therapy involved also, nothing worked. The knee did get better over time with one shot. It was a sprained MCL as I recall. The hand surgery was a piece of cake. Good Luck

@@MarkSmith-js2pu Thanks Mark, I wasn't very happy with my consultation at The Cleveland Va Medical Center on 8/30/2021. I wasn't given any options other than surgery, and I still can use my finger. It is sore and does stick a lot. I sent my primary VA doctor who referred me there a message about not being happy, hopefully, she'll reply back soon. I saw that some doctors do not operate, they use a needle to cut the sheath. I was told that I would be put out with a General Anastisa too, not a local. I am really not sure about having this done now. Thank you once again, Mark Smith.

I have had 7 fingers done for trigger finger and 3 for Dupuytren's the past 4 years. Two of the trigger fingers were a single finger and done in the docs office with just a numbing injection. Not fun. The others done in the hospital, under general anesthesia, as more than one finger was done. On one Dupuytren's I waited too long as the finger does not straighten out fully. I did a couple of steroid injection and they were a waste of time as well as hurt like hell. Always Always have a board-certified hand surgeon do the surgery and any injections you may have, as mine was. I am 76 yo. Excellent video.

@Samantha Sumstine my hands work almost perfectly and I pray yours does also. Since my last post I have had 3 more surgeries under general anesthesia. Sept-20, Nov-20 and April -21. 2 trigger fingers, 2 dupuytren's and a carpal tunnel. All were painless and my hands work very well now. As soon as a symptom shown up in my hands I get my old butt to the doc asap. The sooner the doc see me the easier it is to fix. My doc ask me if I want to take an injection or do I want it fixed. I get it fixed. Prayers and good luck to ya.

@Samantha Sumstine The consequences of not getting your hands fixed are horrible. A 81 yo friend of mine, fingers are curled up into his palms from dupuytren's disease. Several years ago I told him to go see a doc and he did not. Today he can't control his bowels and must wear a diaper. He is unable to put his diapers on, because of his hands. Because he lives alone, he runs around his house naked. That is pretty bad ! If this sounds like the kind of life a person wants go for it and do nothing.

      @SuziRider5D Před 2 lety +1

Tendon damage from an accident is different than tenosynovitis, which is possibly from localized bacterial or viral infection of the tendon or tendon sheath.
Reptitive use is not the cause, but just irritates it more.
Wait too long to get it fixed, you learn to stop using that finger, which is interconnected with others, then grip strength lessens and rehab of the hand becomes more difficult.
I have had my elbow, thumb, wrist and finger 'released'.

@Dave Munsie cortisone isn't good for you to take often, so I got the surgery, which was awesome... and right after the surgery there was no more trigger finger. You have to keep exercising your fingers (flexing them etc...) right after the surgery and do that as often as you can and then eventually your hand and finger is back to normal and any scaring completely heals. Sometimes I forget which hand I had the surgery because they both look and feel the same. Good luck.

Great video, thank you! Does the way in which one uses or moves the fingers contribute to developing TF?

I thought I would have to have surgery but I got the Doctor that replaced my wrist to look at my trigger finger and she gave me a steroid shot where my finger hooked on my hand . She did good no surgery. One year ago .

Xyanni You have a cyst which can be quite even more painful later on if you ignore it and much worst. Go get it checked it may be likely you may have to have surgery for it.

Had this surgery, a week later accidentally hit my finger and it locked up.
Is that normal 1 week after surgery? I figured might be due to stitches and swelling possibly it was done on my a1 pulley for my pinky finger.
My range of motion was already a lot better but didn’t lock up until fully closed
