- "Murphy's Law," was the name of a number 1 Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart single by the Montreal, Quebec-based American female dance duo Chéri. It reached the top spot in May 1982 and stayed there for three weeks. The single also reached the Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it peaked at number 39 that same year.
Written and produced by Geraldine Hunt and Freddie James, the mother and brother of Chéri singer Rosalind Hunt, the song is based on the sayings of Murphy's Law, in which they told a boyfriend that his good luck had just run out and everything he had owned were being taken away from him.
When he realizes what has happened and thought that it wouldn't happen to him , the ladies reply by telling him "got it all together, don't cha baby..." The track is also best known for featuring squeaky sped-up vocals and laughs throughout the song and in its chorus.
Today the song is considered both a Club and an Old School classic by many fans. It would also be a One-hit wonder and a novelty hit for the duo, even though they did have a few minor hits on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart: "Give It To Me Baby"/"Star Struck" (#57, 1982), "Working Girl" (#27, 1983), and "small town lover" (1983).
Recently, the song has been featured on Canadian band Chromeo's DJ-Kicks compilation.
My favorite song!!! Still here in 2024!!
ITS BEEN AWHILE BUT IM BACK AND STILL LOVING IT!!
@@coffeecup369 hey Besite!! You get the vibe!!!
MY ABSOLUTE FAV!!!!! THIS IS THEEEE JAMMMMM!!!!!
I know right 2 AM in the morning for me LO.L
THIS MIGHT BE A ONE HIT WONDER,BUT WHAT A HIT IT WAS.
Surprised to hear this was a one hit wonder. Cheri have many great songs. This is very good but barely top 3 imo
I heard it on Sirrus today in my car and had to crank it up and sing along to it. Like I did back when it came out.
What channel on satellite radio??
I heard it today on XM radio!!! Ch51 ❤❤❤❤
I only took me 38 years to learn what the chipmunk voice is singing in the chorus. "Got it all together don't ya baby" 😄
🤣🤣😅😂
For years I thought the chipmunk was saying doing fine now
Aren't you baby... 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for this cos from all the years I heard this song, I never knew what the words were!!
Well done! Congratulations! I would take all of my life without knowing that (😂lol😂)
I was today years old when I found out.
In 1982, I remember recording this song from the radio on my “rectangle” cassette player, and 🤫 “shushing” my siblings when they bombarded my room! Nothing like being a teenager/young adult in the 1980s!😎
Solara, " o my gosh" me too. I was a Teenager 13 years of aged younger lady. I've also used to record songs off of the Radio. I still have some of my recorded Cassette Tapes. I also have a Cassette Player and a Record Player for my Albums. I wished we had a Time Machine. Because the 21st Century is just not my Century.🤦🏾♀️

@@lastdays3148 should. Hit. Number one
Word❤
@@lastdays3148 ….🤗Same here! You just described my teenage life in the 1980s! Homework, cleaning the house, ironing, washing dishes, laundry, cleaning our cars, yard work, babysitting, playing sports, driving, school events, and walking was not the same without music. It was the greatest part of life then, and still is! I’d gladly return to the 1️⃣9️⃣8️⃣0️⃣s!
This song sounds better then any song made in 2019
Lol thats a stretch
I agree. Seems like most artists nowadays are just paid make noise over original music artwork.
And in 2021😂
True. Better than any song since the 1990s in fact.
For those who were there and loved this song, here's another lost masterpiece you'll def, remember czcams.com/video/uJ678pIU2qA/video.html
My absolute favorite song of the early 80s!!! Hands down!!!
Look at me telling you what to do. Junior "Momma use to say" ?!!!!!!
Childhood memories growing up in NY, loved this song.
This song may not have won a grammy, but what a great thumping bass!
A song doesn’t need a Grammy to be good. Have you seen some of the past winners? A pure joke.
@@cathedral94 lol just meant the bass was good !
Fantastique !!!!!!!!!!!!! Guy
I always loved this crazy, zany song -but seeing the girls perform it makes it even better!
A rare gem from the early 80s. I remember this song- should have been bigger than #39 on the charts IMO. :)
billboard hot dance club play #1 in may 1982...
Was a big hit in the UK at #13 in a very strong chart
I agree thank goodness that my dance hall rocked it.
I was a kid at the time and this song was on the radio a lot. Haven't heard it since, but it was widely played in 1982.
Facts..
I remember this song from when I was a kid.
I had no idea there were two ladies. I thought it was just one.
The more you know, eh?
Skinnyd4 Same here
Yes I also remember this song when I was a kid ..I remember hearing it on the radio while me & my mom cleaned the house .
I was a kid too, here in Brasil.
Two skanks.🤣
Me too!!! Fucken jam. I'm a 77 kid. Love this song
Never knew it was a duo
iSpyCars Years I know right. Definitely a case where the group name is misleading and doesn't do them justice.
Me either
Me either wow
I didn't know either
I was today years old 😂
I was a senior in high school when this came out. It brought back some great memories hearing it again after almost 40 years!
Word up😎🤢👍
The bass man is seriously working this groove....
I was randomly listening to an old school radio station and this song came up. I looked up the lyrics and found this video. I'm sooo in love with this song!! I wish I was around and of age during this time.
Me toooo!!! They've been playing this so much on our oldies station and I absolutely love it. Definitely something I will be adding to the books 💞
I was there and yes, the 80s was as fly as the song sounds!
40 years ago this week in May 1982, this song was #1 on the dance charts and #39 on the pop charts.
So many good memories on this song. It's nothing but the truth and a classic!
That's right :D
Well said.
Just karma my friend :)
Brilliant keyboards and bass guitar.
so AMAZING to grow up to such great music!!!!
I always Loved this song , it's the facts!! Murphy Law
Man does this song take me back. Back to a time so pure, so care free. It was a time BEFORE MTV and VH1. Saturday afternoon videos came on and you tried not to miss it. This was the BOMB!! :)
This song still.sounds good. And they both had great voices.
This song was playing my very first time I went to a Disco. Unforgettable how the speakers sounded!!!
OMG FOR THOSE WHO MISSED THAT ERA MY CONDOLENCES SMH!
thomas brunn I’m about 10 years younger than you but I was still 9 when this came out. When I was old enough to turn on a radio the best songs were out. I have watched this video 4 times already in the last 1 hour and a half. Never gets old.
Also, these ladies are getting me aroused with their gyrations and what not.
Talking 👄 about Bringing sexy Back
I was around then. Sure, I was only 5 years old in 1982, but I was around.
We sound not being 65 mate. Ta.
i was definitely not around but my parents have put a large imprint of amazing songs from this era and im so happy
People were just so together and caring back then. There was a sense of respect for one's self and dress attire.
Where did the time go??
One of my ALL TIME FAVORITE songs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you. I’m 69 and just finding out what they are saying…but I always loved this song. 🎶
OMG all this time I didn't know it was a duo . they sound similiarto me . I used to love this song got it on my pod now man I miss the 80s
I am 51 this song came out when I was 17 this is my first time ever seeing what Cheri looked like! Wow! Love it!
Wow! this song was around, then just disappeared! I was 12, in the car with my dad. we were discussing what voice effect was used cuz it was a new effect at the time. The mixing room size synthesizers were just starting to fade out for smaller electronics...Even with electronics, musicians were more talented(in general), back then. This is the first time I've heard it since 82....TANKS!
Eventide Harmonizer/ early sampler.
Hated this when it first came out in 82, then as the years passed, grew to love it. A golden era, with so many great dance/funk artists. Happy days!!
This is bound to be one of those "Marmite" songs,I thought when I heard it on the radio back then. Interesting and original but those with less adventurous ears (their loss) could have found it a little jarring at first. Reached number 13 in the UK in July 1982.
Remember this growing up but only heard it again this year and now can't stop playing it ...love the two girls in this
That’s how it goes u first hear the song u don’t like it then da future comes u like it now
I remember my babysitter playing this song all the time when I was little
Good to see two women black and white side by side as sisters and equals looking good as each other. This should remind all of us that this is the vision of the future for everyone in the end.
Yeah...*tears...sighs*
There were loads of groups like this in the 70s, 80s and 90s. People seem to have forgotten that people were getting on with each other just fine back then.
I remember this as a kid back in the early 80s. Didn't think anything about the colour of their skin. Lots of groups about of mixed races 30/40 yrs ago and nobody cared. It's the people drawing attention to skin colour who're creating the problems today.
@@ajs41 even in the 00s as well
But today, the race baiting media and Democrats are doing their best to divide us.
I was 11 when this was released... I always liked this song... But never knew who sung it... I'm even more surprised it's a duet... Great song even better memories 💯✌💗
I was kindergarten when this song came out, my Mama played this a lot on the stereo. #80sKid
This song was number 39 on this very day in 1982!! Exactly 40 years to the day!
OMG! This is footage from a Quebec dance music TV show from the 80's, Jeunesse express (Youth Express). You can see the neon sign once in a while. Popo, the show hippopotamus mascot also appears a bit in the back ground. Classic. Thanks for posting.
i'm from montreal but this show was before my time. i was a pre-teen by the time we got musique plus
@@misterhappy5462 that was even before Musique Plus.

Great song! Miss those good all times.World was so different back then
love this song , brings back good times
Could watch this all day
This was a slamming cut back in the day, still ripping
This song brought a _lot_ of memories from 1982 and the early-'80s with it just hearing "Murphy's Law" now after almost 40 years. Where the heck did the time go?
probably one of the best ever heard I like that I was 11 years when I heard it the first time the 80's are the best musics ever produced !
All these years I thought it was ONE SINGER, not a duo!
One of my favorites of all times😊
Wow, ive not heard this since i was a young boy, timeless classic pop song, still sounds good today in 2024, thanks for posting it........
This is so good! Take me back Marty...
I recall being on a bowling team named Murphy's Law bowling at Beacon Bowl in Barstow California '81-82. Had some really nice memories from that House, especially rolling in Major/Minors on Sunday Afternoon
I love the barely-interested vibe these ladies are putting out. Like the late Phil Hartman would say: "SASSY!"
I’ll always remember this song as a favorite memory
My 12 year old self in NYC! All on the radio❤️❤️❤️❤️
Always loved this song. I loved the 80's music
Still sounds so good 35 years on !! wow miss those days :(
Rare define but fine indeed groovy song the backbeat chorus vocals sounds like Stacy Lattisaw excellent Attack Of The Name Game came out around the same time in 82 to the greatest decade of all time never to forget miss it so much oh hail the 80s
Damn, I was 17 when this came out...for some reason, this song reminds me of playing video games in arcades that summer.
Wow what a time Machine I remember this back in 82 at Ft. Bragg the NCO.club those were the days.
I have always wanted to see what they looked like.. NICE
Legendary✨🔔✨
I remember this song back in my freshman year of high school back in the spring of 1982
Cheri was a one-hit wonder, but boy what a one hit wonder it was.

Une des meilleures chansons de tout les termes on s'en lasse pas
Memories of growing up on the South Side of Chicago. All my family were alive and well and us youngunz didn't have a care in the world back then. Golden times. Chicago radio had this song on FIRE back then too.
I REALLY like to watch Rosalind Milligan Hunt dance to this song! This video is hypnotic. The music is so smooth. It's been 37 years, and I still like listening (watching) 'Murphy's Law'.
Just remembered this song after so many years. This is what I think of, when I think 80's from my perspective. Thought this sounded so funky then, like some cool ass chipmunks in the background. Thought they borrowed them from Jam-on-it.
Yes, they do sound like those Jam-on-it chipmunks, another song I've always liked!
The beginnings of Rap!
Massive in the UK 1982. Love it.
I just looked up this song here on CZcams, it was always a huge hit in the very early eighties at the gay clubs here in Fort Lauderdale!! It put everyone on the dance floor doing the most sensual moves it was great!!! Just made you smile and happy. Made me smile this morning and I feel like crap 😖.
Loved this jam at the roller rink.
Dany 53 ans
God almighty! I do miss those days lol we had sooooo much fun!!!!
Wow! This is soooooo....1982!
It was so plaisant to dance on the funky music of 80s...
Love this timeless piece of music
I have to admit I like that they are both attractive and have great voices. One of my favorite '80s one hit wonders. For some reason I thought the song had charted higher on the U.S. pop charts. It certainly deserved to do better.
what a gem
They are real attractive with natural beauty and they can sing,
Been humming this song all week. Classic
this song is amazing i really missed it
Love this song sure did dance too it all the time I went out in the City those were those days.

I adore this song that I used to listen when I was 10-11 y-o.
CLASSIC! THESE GIRLS WERE THE BUSINESS!
Loved this disco song while I was buying New wave albums. And I still love it.
I loved this song. Boy does time fly!
"Jeunesse Express" was a Quebec TV show. I didn't know that Chéri was a group from Quebec."Murphy's Law" was a huge hit in NewYork City. It played endlessly on Kiss FM in the summer of 1982.
vele herinneringen aan deze plaat.great....
you're gonna reap what you sow baby, Murphy's Law !
That's not Murphy's law: Murphy's Law is anything that could go wrong will go wrong, thats Murphy's law not the same as the law of Reaping what you sow.
its always too doggone late tho
Great memories I wish I could go back
Great memories from my HS years back in 82 at Ben Harrison HS Indianapolis Got it all together don't u baby 😉
Just thought about this song yesterday and it's nice to be able to hear it again. It rings so true to life.

Old school brilliant underated 80s soul funk by Cheri Murphy's law from 1982
I first heard this song on The Groove satellite channel. Not a bad song.
