Paul Bracq and the Mercedes Pagoda

In 1963, star designer Paul Bracq reoriented automobile design with the Mercedes 230 SL, also known as the Pagoda. Clear lines and timeless elegance still fascinate car lovers and those who have turned their passion into their profession.

The characteristic shape of the detachable coupé roof with its inward curvature improves passive safety: the concave shape ensures greater stability and low weight at the same time. Because the coupé roof designed by Paul Bracq is reminiscent of the curved roofs of Far Eastern temples, the new Mercedes 230 SL is quickly given the nickname Pagoda.
