I love how this scene, from an old film which I'm sure that comparatively few people ever saw outside of India, has now become an international sensation throughout the world, thanks to CZcams. It's terrific how many people totally love the song, the costumes and especially the dancing. Back in the middle 1960s, no one who worked on the film could every have anticipated they were making a future classic!

Funny how people on here are commenting about how wonderfully weird this is, and how strange. I grew up with this music, not weird, just classic Bollywood.

In 1965, she appeared as a masked dancer in Gumnaam, performing in the song Jaan Pehechan Ho. Her performance gained a cult following across India and America; it has been regarded as her signature work. IndiaTimes Group states: "The enthusiastic dance by Laxmi Chhaya and Herman Benjamin is not something today’s actors will be able to pull off with the same ease and grace." Chhaya was active from 1958 to 1986, a period in which she amassed over 100 film credits. She subsequently worked as a dance teacher. On 9 May 2004, Chhaya died of cancer in Mumbai at the age of 56. Tributes have been published and created in recognition of Chhaya's work in the film industry.
Can't we just agree that times like this were much better than they are now? Whenever you see the modern version if this it usually ends up in OD'S, and DUI'S.
hey zapper, the song is very much Indian and so are the characters in this movie Gumnaam which simply translates into Nameless. This movie is still one of the best Mystery Hindi films ever produced in India. The lead dancer is the Late Laxmi Chayya who passed away 5 years ago in Bombay. Long Live Bollywood. Long Live India. Jai Hind. Thanks once again Anna from all your viewers. Vijay
Love this video from the first time I saw it in Ghost World (one of my favorite movies ever)! Also the way Thora Birch acts out the female dancer's moves. It's almost like this should be in a Tarantino movie.
Thora and Scarlett -- buscemi.....my oh my....shake it!! I love love love Ghostworld -- and Bollywood! This makes me happy...lunch time, some old school bollywood dancing (featured in the amazing Ghostworld movie)...shake it!! Their flat-footed shake-a-shake and "hamburgler/zorro masks" and shiny dresses and happy beat lights up my life. This is gooood stuff.
Heard this song on college radio (Album88, 88.5 FM in Atlanta) several times over the years... Then recently on the heineken commercial... Super catchy!!! Never saw Ghost World or this particular movie
I used to dance to this in 1965 when I was 13yrs old.Anybody who knocks this video does not know "cool" This music is right up there with Peter Gunn,The Ventures, all that cool stuff from the 60's. Five mins of this could salvage the most boring party or wedding reception anywhere in the world, bam !.........love it !

I'm watching this video several times a day. For about five or six weeks. Just crazy. Never saw anything like it- or can somebody show more of that stuff?
Her name is Laxmi Chhaya - she's always been a minor actress in Bollywood films. She's best known as the femme fatale in 'Maar Diya Jaaye' from the 1971 film Mera Gaon Mera Desh. The man's name is completely unknown to the public - people are guessing his is "Ted Lyon" as the back of the bass drums says "Ted Lyons & His Cubs". From what people had seen, the band appeared in a few Hindi films in the 1960s (e.g. Janwar and Anita).
Years Before Ghost World The Cramps did an Interview on T.V. They talked about a Tour to England how they would just stay inside their hotel & watch Balliwood Movies! This was 1 of their favorites!!!
notice one of the girls dancing in this fantastic song is NON INDIAN , ALSO THE PERFORMER IN THE WHITE SUITE WHO DANCING IS AWESOME A WAY HEAD OF ITS TIME AND VERY MODERN IN 1965. I LOVE THE BIT WHEN HE HITS THE MICROPHONE. he,s got a wonderful name 2 i think he,s called master herman.
Wow, freakin incredible man, the song, singer and that chick dancing. This is fantastic! Forget Heinekin and ghost world, I totally agree with rdonaldsnyder, this piece kicks ass all on its own!!!!!
I saw this the first time when The Cramps were guests on a TV show we had out here in So Cal called Request Video. Had been looking for it for years and then saw it on Ghost World.
So I guess the song was sung by Mohammed Rafi (composed by famous Indian music director duo Shankar Jaikishan, lyrics by Shailendra), but the actor who is singing it on screen is Herman Benjamin (a.k.a. Harman), who also served as choreographer. The band depicted is Ted Lyons and his Cubs (I think Ted Lyons might be the drummer). Hard to find much information on Herman Benjamin. Great moves, great look. I bet the corporate sponsors for this movie were all aspirin companies - some heavy duty head shaking gong on here, and all with a smile to boot. Very cool, very classy!
That Heineken commercial from like 10 years ago brought me here lol... I finally had time to go to the beginning of my favorites and appreciate this again 😂

Thank U!!
Is this supossed to be a deleted scene from "eyes wide shut" (bollywood cut)?
Awesome
If India was still this cool they could rule the world!
Funny how people on here are commenting about how wonderfully weird this is, and how strange. I grew up with this music, not weird, just classic Bollywood.
Stylistically, I think it's pretty different from classic Bollywood.
Every pop artifact eventually becomes weird. Classic Hollywood musicals were wild when they were first released.
@@pmarasa Yeah, just look at porn, then and now...
I want this playing at my funeral, complete with the dancers.
this girl knows how to get down! Definitely one of my favorite songs with Mohammed Rafi
The man singing is actually Mohammed Rafi, a Bollywood screen legend. It's not hard to google a cd or download him.
One of the greatest Indian singers of all time. Listening to his voice is like taking a boat down a river in the moonlight.
"Ghost World" brought me here...
no shit
I doubt there’s any other reason honestly lol
Me too - very happy! Now on to the 5 6 7 8s from "Kill Bill"
I've always been so grateful to that movie for being awesome and exposing me to rad tunes.
You too?
There's a million reasons why this is great!!
Ghost World brought me here. Great stuff, hard to sit still watching it. Bravo Bollywood !
This song makes me feel so ridiculously happy and energetic!
*dances around giddily*
One of the best parts of "Ghost World"
rande stuart yhe only good part
They are so turnt! I can only imagine how fun this probably was for them to film.
Rafi rocking it out. Love it. I was kid back in 60 ...
Thanks to Sips and his amazingly obscure but disturbingly specific old references for bringing me to this video.

Ghost World is a fabulous film! I've seen it over 20 times. I love that it opens with this super scene!
sips brought me here
A wonderful, energetic performance. Will never get tired of watching this dance scene.
LOVIN' IT. I can't help but think of this scene as an Indian director's interpretation of the 50s and mid-1960s clubs. Too interesting.
Can't we just agree that times like this were much better than they are now? Whenever you see the modern version if this it usually ends up in OD'S, and DUI'S.
So I finally felt I had to see if it was actually real... and it is. Damn it, Sips..
wedding music soundtrack material for sure!!*******

These dance moves are spectacular. I think that we can all learn from their mastery.
These guys kind of look like the Crazy 88's from Kill Bill.
Tim is right
I thought he was saying Gena loves Don Ho, like from Hawaii, great start for Ghost World movie.
That’s funny! Now I’ll never hear it any other way. I used to print shirts for Don Ho to sell at his Waikiki shows. He was a nice guy.
Quite simply one of the greatest musical sequences I've seen, 'rock' or otherwise.
Love this video from the first time I saw it in Ghost World (one of my favorite movies ever)!
Also the way Thora Birch acts out the female dancer's moves.

This music is from 1969, indian movie called Gumnaam, you can find it on CZcams.
Hatsoff to Shankar-Jaikishan, Rafi Saheb and choreographer...
The director for this vid was probably like, ok everybody dance like if no one is watching you, and BAM!!! This vid came oit
So glad to find this after being enthralled years ago!
They didn't rip it off, they did a very tasteful homage to it.
I'm watching this video several times a day.
For about five or six weeks.
Just crazy.
Never saw anything like it-
or can somebody show more of that stuff?

I saw this the first time when The Cramps were guests on a TV show we had out here in So Cal called Request Video. Had been looking for it for years and then saw it on Ghost World.

Gotta love that cinemasong.
