I read that in the dark ages of etiquette and decorum, wine glasses were deliberately made to be fragile to force people around the table to take care in what they were doing.
All this pomp and ceremony involved in parliament could be seen as a similar example. The UK was once a brutal, lawless land and a lot of work has gone into making us a civilisation that works. It might be seen as outdated now, but it harks back to a time where things like this were necessary to keep people orderly.
The more we fall out of love with law and order, the more we fall into the manipulations of corporations and individuals that mean us harm.

Telling the Truth has never been popular. The whole thing is just like a pantomime! All this old fashioned language, the pantomime outfits and the whole unreality of the proceedings only increases the distance between the electorate and Westminster and they wonder why the turnout at the last election was so low.

What a disappointing quirk of fate that Sir Edward Leigh swore the oath before the other members who first joined the house on the same day, or else we could have had Jeremy Corbyn taking part in this momentous occasion instead!
