    Retired Pharm.D. here. Class of 1972 UCSF School of Pharmacy. Clinical pharmacy started here in late 60s. Very difficult at first cause the docs didn’t think we knew anything. And what were we doing up on the wards on rounds? We should be in the basement where we traditionally worked making up medicines. At that time, 1968, UCSF Medical School did NOT OFFER ONE COURSE IN PHARMACOLOGY ! It was rated in top five of all medical schools. Wow …what an eye opening experience. The medical students learned about drugs verbally from medical students
    , interns and residents.

      No, they shouldn't. They actually don't know how to facilitate patient care. It's very apparent considering how different their training is. Most Pharmacists don't even do a formal residency training period following graduation. They rarely work with patients directly.

      @ZahdShah Před 4 lety +7

      No. I'm a pharmacist student and we are trained to think very differently to doctors. Doctors must diagnose and prescribe. Pharmacists just follow the treatment plan of a doctor unless they are qualified to independently prescribe which brings their role more closely to that of a doctor.

    • @wassimm1933
      @wassimm1933 Před 3 lety +26

      @@37VQV Wrong. Pharmacists go through 4 years of Doctoral level training in clinical sciences and pharmacotherapy. They are more than qualified to handle complex cases involving multiple medications in a patient with multiple co-morbidities. Have you ever worked with pharmacists before to claim that they rarely see patients? They are the drug experts. In my practice physicians refer patients to the pharmacist when dealing with complex cases such as elderly patients receiving multiple medications and experiencing falls or other geriatric syndromes to try to identify and remove incriminating drugs. Please do your research before claiming any facts.

    Accept clinical pharmacist
    Other pharmacist are just formulator (industry)
    And dispenser (community and hospital)
    More concerned for maintaining drug quality.
    Pharmacist are thought to develop medicine but most specifically they just formulate and quality check only that’s it
    Developing new drugs is important and necessary

    shouldn't pharmacists be called doctors as well? i'm becoming a pharmacist/doctor and I want to know if our work in the hospital is important or does it just stand for someone who give the patients medicine because the doctors are busy to do that thing ? I mean the video sounds to me like the people in it are trying so hard to convince us that the work in the hospital is as important as the other doctors while it's not that much ... I want to know if our job is important in the hospital or is it just someone giving pills !

      Chels T Pharmacists in retail do make a bit more, they don't receive any extra formal training or education than hospital pharmacists do, they get on the job training to familiarize themselves with company protocol and RX system for filling scripts.

    • @justarandomgal2683
      @justarandomgal2683 Před 6 lety +1

      bighead69 In the U.S. it now takes a minimum of 6 years of training for what is called 0 to 6 programs you can enter right out of high school. Most Pharmacy programs are 4+4 programs. That is four years of undergrad and four years of pharmacy school. My sister did a 3 year accelerated PharmD program, meaning that her breaks were only a week off at most. So I guess you could call her program a 4+3 program. My sister was a bit non traditional though. She actually received a M.S. in chemistry and l decided to make a career change to pharmacy. However, Physicians have mandatory residencies . So the profession of physician requires post graduate training in order to practice. Pharmacists do not need residencies, but they are becoming desirable for certain positions.
