  • Hey y'all! Thanks for stopping by! In this video, I am discussing the reasons we personally chose to switch our main reading curriculum in our homeschool. Both of these reading programs can work great, and both have pros and cons. I hope this video helps you decide if either of these may work for your family 😊
I'm Kaela, a 2nd Generation Homeschool Momma of two girls. Our Texan family of four lives in a little 1930s bungalow that we have been slowly renovating for 6 years. I love homeschool, books, DIY renovation and homemaking, and I share about all those lovely things right here :)

Omg! This is why I binge watch reviews & flip throughs. I’m barely in the beginning of 100 lessons & all the pink text for the parent is so overwhelming. Obviously I haven’t made it further, but I can totally see the confusion with all the extra symbols.
Now to search for a used AAR lol

    • @jessicapearson9479
      @jessicapearson9479 Před rokem +1

No, there is no confusions at all. She doesn't know how to use this book. All that stops at lesson 76. Those little symbols help the child to remember the rules so they can read and write. If you read the first part of the book before the lessons start (and I mean ACTUALLY read all of it) it will explain the method and even teach you how to use this book properly.

All About Reading is OG and it can be too much thinking about rules and stuff. My daughter didn’t make it through the levels because of this. The teach your child, I just got flash cards to not show the book and you can manipulate the stories out of the book by photocopying and such. It takes some prep work but it’s worth it. I also learned to read as an English language learner from the Distar method which is used in the teach your child book so it’s a very powerful teaching method. The little sounds that are not pronounced actually helped me remember NOT to pronounce it and after a while and much practice I learned the patterns with these combination letters which helped the automaticity of my reading so that you are fluent.

I think I will be changing from the 100 lessons to AAR. Because also for my daughter the symbols helped her ALOT but when she went to read a book without the symbols she would have such a hard time .
She did very well in the beginning with 100 Easy Lessons but then the book just got boring for her (and me) and she would loathe it. So we got stuck.
Thanks for review. Ordering it now !

Good video. I would like to share my perspective.
My sister-in-law, a very successful home-schooler of eight children, used a more traditional approach with a different program, but similar to the one you used. She had the financial resources, patience and time for that type of instruction. I needed something simple, smaller, cheaper and quicker! And I suppose I like new and different things so it was intriguing to me when I came across the 100 lessons book! (What??! Really?) So I used this book 30 years ago and it worked so well. I was working full-time, and needed to have fast progress with each session, with a sense of completion by the end of “100 easy lessons”!
My kids read real books, their own books, at 4 and 5, after finishing this. At the beginning I did have to help them sit still, not ask questions, focus… and follow instructions to the T. But then it’s for such a short time for each lesson. The 100 easy lessons book teaches the parent how to do those things, and emphasizes keeping the lesson to under 10 minutes, one lesson at a time, and to NOT EXPLAIN why the orthography is different, just do what it tells you to do. I didn’t have the extra pink stuff in my version of the book- the parent instructions were all separate. And it changes to regular orthography in later lessons. I found it easy and very effective to just closely follow the very specific and simple, straightforward instructions.

@@mujtabaalam5907 good questions! Honestly I don’t remember details exactly but she might have used Writing Road to Reading, Hooked on Phonics, McGuffey’s Eclectic Readers, or more likely a combination of all of those and more. I do remember that she drew from many resources for all of her schooling. She still has all or most of her materials and loves to help others with their home schooling quest, even though her youngest has just graduated from university.
As for what books my kids read, we had very many books from picture books to chapter books and were frequent visitors to our local library for them to find more books. They all read prolifically, whatever was of interest to them. We read aloud together, all kinds of books from The Hungry Caterpillar to the Bible to Tolkien. (I guess you get the point!) 😃 They started loving books long before they learned to read. They loved to be read to, to talk about the pictures and tell their own stories.

I am using the ordinary parents guide to teaching reading. My son is 4.5 and tested on a first grade level with reading. We're on lesson 75. We started just before he turned 3. For most of that time we did one lesson a week. After he recently tested at a first grade level and told me I was taking too long we started doing one lesson a day. I was nervous about that because I wondered how he'd remember all of that but he's doing fine. He's flying through now. Even when it's kind of tough he catches on quickly and rolls with it. And we're not awesome. Totally ordinary...

It is clear you really do not understand the "Teach you child to read in 100 easy lessons." Book.
First, you can explain why the little letters are little. It really is simple. They are silent letters.
Second, cursive connects the letter sounds like c and h. This method helps the child to realize they make one sound and act as one letter. This method is based of through research.
It explains all this and more at the beginning of the book.
Also, if your child was really writing like that. Well, then that is your fault. You are supposed to show your child how the sentences are really supposed to look.
Not to mention it is clear that you did not really use the book at all. This is evident by the fact that your child would not actually be writting that was as it stops those "little letter" and the square spacing on lesson 76. Where it transitions into all same size letters like you would see in a normal book and not "square space" between the words.

This really made me laugh!! I love that you've done all this sleuthing! You must have a lot of time on your hands. I actually have used the book - from start to finish. My mother also used the book with my brothers and I as students. So yeah. I'm QUITE familiar with the program, how it works, and the research behind it. I also know that every kid is different, and not all students will respond to any resource or curricula the same way, regardless of how well-designed said resource is. I still think that Teach Your Child in 100 can work beautifully for a lot of kids and families. It just didn't work for my little over-thinker. We are now wrapping up the final level in All About Reading and I have ZERO regrets about switching over. AAR has given my kid such a solid foundation in reading, vocabulary, spelling, literary devices, and grammar in a way this book never could. Everyone has to find what works for them. You have a great day!

I'm a teacher and homeschooler and I DO NOT like the 'Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons". It is so overpraised and so annoying that they teach the long vowels before the short vowel sounds. Most phonics programs do not teach this way for a reason. I also believe All About Reading is another overrated and expensive program. I use Hooked on Phonics and it works. It's so simple to use, fairly priced, and fun for kids.
