We've all made excuses in our life. For years we may have sensed God was calling us into ministry, but we knew that was a mistake because we didn't even get along most times. Often times we'd be thinking about our past failures & questioning each other asking, "How & why would God use us? There’s always an excuse if we’re looking for one. Most excuses seem reasonable at first glance. Think about the excuses Moses made! The reality is following a God-inspired, God-sized dream, always requires stepping into the unknown & always demands we overcome our excuses.
We didn’t have the best ministerial qualities either. We'd go to churches where people didn't even know us & hear them give us a word from God about how He was calling us into ministry. Then they encouraged us that we need to start praying about it & what did we do? We convinced each other that it wasn't God speaking & that it wasn't a good idea anyway. As time passed God begin showing us signs & we became certain that God was calling us to something, but we stalled & still made excuses. We used any & every excuse that would come to our minds to justify our not obeying God but we soon learned that we were treading on dangerous ground. Some of the excuses we used are
WE CAN'T DO IT! WE CAN'T AFFORD IT!
Our excuse we don’t have what it takes. The sad part of this excuse means we weren’t trusting God to provide what we lack. Saying we can’t to a God thing is an indicator of no faith. If God calls us to it, we can do it because whatever we lack, He'll supply. Gideon had an excuse. (Judges C6)
WE DON'T KNOW HOW! WE DON'T HAVE TIME!
The task seems overwhelming & we're too proud to ask for help. So, we don’t know how; will just
have to do for now. If you trace its roots, this excuse is often fueled by either laziness, apathy/fear. Noah didn't know how to build a boat/an ark? (Genesis 6) God called for obedience. We're too preoccupied & will never have time. This one has worked for us before; for a season. What it really meant was we had time for us not God... Truth was we had our agenda & God’s agenda we ignored. Jesus thoughts on this (Luke 9:57-62)
WE'RE NOT SURE WHAT GOD WANTS!
Leading out by faith feels this way sometimes, doesn’t it? Sometimes we can’t see the forest for the trees when it comes to being obedient to God’s call. We once thought we were the only ones w/a burden to go help plant a church. It seemed to be a lonely burden until we stepped forward in faith. Little did we know God had an army of core members prepared just waiting to be asked. Elijah thought He was alone & but he wasn't. (1 Kings 19)
WE'RE AFRAID!
The reality of this excuse is you can choose to let fear control you. We have many times. Fear's simply an emotion & it’s a powerful, often motivating excuse. Much could go wrong w/your dream. You could mess it up! You could have misunderstood what you sense God calling you to do. Plus, our mind is capable & skilled at quickly creating worst-case-scenarios. Trusting God, even when you’re afraid to do so, always produces God-appointed & God-sized victories. You can’t possibly get
to the victory until you face the fear. We learned a lot from Esther. (Esther C3)
Afraid the dream will be more expensive than the provision of God? Can’t tell you how many times we’ve heard the money fear raised by missionaries. We say the money is in the harvest. Consider the widow woman (1 Kings 17) & disciples who picked up 12 baskets of leftover bread (Matt 14).
WE WON'T DO IT!
This may be the boldest excuse. W/this excuse you simply refuse. You may disguise it lots of ways, but the fact is you’re doing things your way instead of God’s way. You can combine all the other excuses here, because you won’t even give it a try. In fact, if the truth is known, you’d rather run some more. We did this one for years. Imagine the excuse Jonah made! (Jonah). There'll always be an excuse not to follow the dreams God lays on your heart. Obstacles in life are plentiful. We can keep making excuses/we can address them one excuse at a time. The one who achieves most is often the one most willing to overcome excuses.
