  • Guess who's back! No future hubs in this video though... we are exploring his 'social media policy.'
    Instead let's talk about what your first week onboard might look like- from the trainings to the process... This one goes out to everyone that has happily messaged me telling me they found employment on a ship!
    I'm thinking stuff about the pre-employment medical/ docs and drugs on the ship for my next vid. Thoughts?
    Everything is my opinion and my opinion only.

    I start my first contract next week and I wanted to say that these videos have been very helpful. Being an intern with a cruise line this entire process has been intimidating. You're videos have definitely helped calm my nerves and I am finally excited to spend my summer at Sea. Thank you!!

    Hi - I really enjoy your video's. Thanks for posting them! I'm a frequent passenger on cruise ships (most recently on Celebrity, Cunard, Holland America); it's interesting to hear a crew member's behind-the-scenes perspective and see a little more of the crew decks than the glimpses we get if that's where the gangway happens to be. Your line ought to give you ship tours to lead!

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  Před 7 lety

      +Kristy Pannill steiner would be the way! Honestly it depends on the management of your particular ship- I've had friends with time off and I've had friends that have had some crazy extra duty hours. I think it depends on how much money they're making as there is a target to hit.

    When your working on a cruise ship do you visit the same ports for your whole contract or does the cruise ship go to different ports within your contract?

    • @theowletblog
      @theowletblog Před 6 lety

      I'm not crew but I have friends who are and it goes to all different ports but you will get some repeats. It just depends when your contract is. If you're on a ship that goes out of Southampton from August then you'll get the Mediterranean ports plus they do the odd Norweigan Fjords cruises, then you'd do the TA in October/November time and you'd be working Christmas in the Caribbean going out of somewhere like Fort Lauderdale

    As someone from Wisconsin (aka south Canada) I am really hoping to be on a contract anywhere warm and take a long pause from winter weather-- any chance of being able to express this goal in an interview of preferred areas for the contract? Thank you for these videos! They have been so helpful!

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  Před 5 lety +1

      Honestly it's not worth bringing up weather. With the exception of Alaska ships follow the good weather in order to stay out of storms as much as possible- so within your 6 month + contract you're almost guaranteed to spend some of it in warm weather (like the Caribbean) and the other months more than likely somewhere like Europe when the ship repositions for the season.

    Do all positions get time off/ go out in port. Im in a travel school currently and I have experience as a bartender/server and some retail.

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  Před 7 lety +2

      +Jacqueline Rocco all positions do get time but some get a lot more than others. With those jobs you listed, working in the shops will get you far more time off the ship than working as a bar server/tender. Bartenders serve everything- they do the fresh juices and are baristas in the morning so they are forever pumping beverages. The shops however have to remain closed in port- by law, they can't open and sell until the ship is so far from shore- so the only time you'd probably be working in port is if you need to do inventory/remerchandise.

    • @TheTwistedWanderer
      @TheTwistedWanderer Před 7 lety +2

      Okay thank you ! I just want to get on board so I'll see what I get, is it easy to move up in positions once on board ?

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  Před 7 lety +3

      It depends what you become. For steiner you can move up to spa manager if you do well/ there's a vacancy. From there it's pretty much the tops unless you luck out and you do really well in the marketing aspect/selling- then you can maybe try to cross train with the Onboard Marketing Manager, which is a proper officer with great pay and privileges- then you're in charge of all the revenue areas- spa, casino, shops etc! Cruise lines really like to work with the people they have when promoting instead of outsourcing, so whatever you become, they'll always look within first. You just have to show interest with the HR manager.

      Most can't. They have their own 'salary at sea' debit card / account they load your funds on- but you can move this to your own very easily. I set mine up to auto send 90% to my home account and kept 10% on the card they gave me as play money out in port.

      +Steve Silva people bitch but yeah, what you do earn is actually bankable as you're not paying to live. Some crew forget how much it costs to live on land. Everytime you breathe/step foot outside your house you spend $ - but there, no car payments, cell bills, rent, paying for groceries, hydro, etc. Oh, and no paying to see the world.

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  Před 7 lety +1

      You can have as many as you want- but they won't fit in your tiny room (and they have to fit in your room- so your roommate won't be happy with all the space your bags take up) and if you have more checked bags than your plane ticket allows, you'll have to pay the fee- the company assumes the regular allotment (usually 1 bag)- any extra is on you.

      I'm not too sure about this job's hours- you could potentially work as late as room service is offered on your line (maybe 2 a.m., maybe it never closes so you have a night shift). Most people on ships average 8-12 hour work days- you work every day. There's laundry- you'll get more than 1 uniform. And no, this job won't pay you when you're off on your vacation- that's just senior officers to my knowledge. There is no 'leave' during your contract- you're onboard for at least 6 months

    Can you pick what ship you want to be. On?

      Not usually. You get assigned. Usually lines save the shiny new ships for their best/ most experienced

      Michelle Tim so let’s just say you started out on the carnival conquest and when your contract ended and you went home when it was time to come back where you put on another ship??

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  Před 6 lety

      I got a new ship each time personally. But I know other people that kept going to the same one. It depends on the needs of the company. Basically there could be another 100 people with the same job as you on different ships. The people planning contracts can see in their system that I'm about to go on my 2 month vacation, due back in September. They can also see that 'john smith' on x ship is set to sign off and start his vacation in september. So whatever ship that guy is on is probably where I'll be sent if that makes sense.

      indeed but For Me i am From Morocco & i am just waiting for my contract now to work with MSC as a Photographer & my question is can i work in an American cruise like The Caribbean as a Photographer if i finished my first contract with that company ?

    • @MichelleTimrox
      @MichelleTimrox  Před 7 lety +2

      +brel yassine you can work anywhere your visas allow :) if your msc ship goes to the Caribbean, you'll go with it. Or you can apply to an American line, yes all nationalities can. If the issue is visas, usually what ive seen happen if you don't have the visas for the regions you are visiting- or the ship offers it to you for a cost and you decline it- is that you just won't get off the ship there. You'll have to stay onboard. If that makes sense?

      Always neat, no funky colours. Always dry, never wet, and you can wear it down if it doesn't touch your collar- if it does, it's gotta go up :)
