"If statistic are there , Why debate" ? Because he is not the most flashy player.
No special tricks , no fancy moves , but everything he does seems so easy for him. He's super efficient. He broke the game. 😁It's like playstation said Zlatan.
If you're not a Football/soccer fan , I suggest to watch other player who loves tricks and spectcular moves.
You'll have a lot of fun discovering them and study why these move are so hard to reproduce with your feet and your body.

Oh also , very important. Watch Maradona. I still think he is the greates. But drugs , mafia problems , women ...
Just imagine if he had the same simple life as Messi. 😕 And at that time , defenders could broke your legs. (and they did ) not like today.
Maradona touch with the ball is still unmatched. With an orange with a tennis ball or even a golf ball. It's unreal.
So please pay hommage to this Argentinian who had inspred us all.

The reason why a debate existed between messi and ronaldo:
    • they played for the biggest rival clubs in football history at the same time and scored unbelievable number of goals
    • ronaldo has won back to back champions leauge trophies while messi was losing back to back international finals.
This provided ronaldo admirers with arguments to stretch the debate for years. But now at the end of their career messi came back for all the trophies he could possibly win and denied all naysayers. There was never a debate on individual level, messi was always better

As an American myself, I didn't grow up appreciating the game of soccer, either. But I happened to be in Germany in 2006, during the World Cup, and Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were the talk of the cosmopolitan town. I got hooked on the sport and started paying attention when I got back Stateside and.... Lemme tell you: I don't think there's ever been an athlete in my lifetime, in ANY sport, who captured my imagination like that little dude. When he finally won the World Cup a couple of years ago, at the age of 35, I wept like a widow. The man is literally divine. All of his fellow professional peers will tell you the same. Having said that... If you're a soccer/futbol novice... Well, you need to check out Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Zlatan was not as good as Messi or Ronaldo or Pele or yada yada whoever, but... Zlatan's highlight reel is unmatched.

    Messi in a Interview:
"'I was small, we would all go to the neighbourhood club where the whole family always went; my brother and cousins would all play, each in their respective category as we were all of the different ages.
'I was one of the youngest ones and therefore there were no categories for me yet. The ‘86 team, a year older than me, was playing and they needed a player - so my grandmother told the coach 'put Leo in the team'.
'No, how am I going to put him in the team, look how small he is, you’re crazy, he’s going to get hurt,' the coach said. But she kept saying 'put him, put him'.
'Apparently, when I went, I did some things and from then, my grandmother came back and told him: ‘Buy him football shoes and next week I will bring him here for training’ - and that’s when I started. It was an amazing time.”
'I scored two goals although truthfully, I do not remember much as I was quite young, but that is the story as my grandmother used to tell it.'"
Leo's grandma died in 1998 when Messi was 11. Every time he scores a goal he points to the heavens to pay tribute to her.

In the world of football there is only some debate about the GOAT between Messi, Maradona and Pelé, all of them from different eras and characteristics. You will only see a debate including Ronaldo if his fans or Real Madrid fans do it. It is even debated whether Ronaldo is in the top 10 in history. You can’t just say Ronaldo is just a goal scorer. Yes this is thing where he is the best (he can score head, right left foot, penalty and freekick, or even a long shot ) but when you look when he was at is peak he was so fast and skillful with the ball and can do everything with it . I think you just have the vision of the Ronaldo of Juventus or when he was back at utd for saying there is at every season it was a competition between this two since 2008 when cr7 won is first ballon d’or and was also the most dominant player of the World in front of Messi (2013-2018) so there is a debate because at their peak We can’t say someone is way better.
Ps: the world cup is a little argument We used to say both are the goat before the world cup and sorry for my english

@@abd0930you’re right Cristiano is complete in his goal scoring that’s my fav thing about him. Personally I only think it’s close in numbers the whole package shouldn’t even be a debate. When it comes to eye test, stats, trophies, individual honours they all point towards Messi. That’s not even the best part about him he does stuff that stats won’t even highlight. It’s funny that ex players, pundits, managers and commentators know Messi is the best yet I have CR7 fans saying otherwise. When you make world class defenders look clueless whilst scoring 800 plus goals and 300 plus assists winning every major trophy consistently Messi is easily the goat. He didn’t need the word cup but that was the icing on the cake to shut down all arguments.

By the way you mentioned about why he points up to the sky? that's because he does that to his dead grandma; she's the reason why he started playing at a very young age when no one wanted to give him a chance and she would take him to every game. I swear his life could be a movie of its own.

His stats just makes it beyond INSANE! Unimaginable and unmatched. Ronaldo was a entertaining player in his younger years, at least for the casuals. Those circus skills he had wasn’t my cup of tea. Later in his career he became a goal scoring machine, with an incredible eye for space and knowing where to be. But lacks all the quality’s Messi has, wich makes him not even close to being as complete Messi is.

At around 2015, he was at his physical peak.
Around 2019, he was literally carrying his team by himself for the whole season. If you look up the 18/19 La Liga stats you'll see what I mean. He was 1st in every category except defensive ones.
Yeah he is in his twilight (he's 36 right now) but he still has the brain and the skills.

He is very consistent so it's difficult to point to his prime, as his prime is like 2007-2019 or something crazy like that. But the year he broke a 40 year-old record was in 2012 when he scored 92 goals in 1 year. The 40 year old record was 85.

Messi is the best of all time and really that much better than anyone else. He is really unbelievable - absolute anomaly, but the thing with football is that there are many styles one can have like being great in the air, off the ball, physically dominant, etc., therefore there are many ways to be great other than just ball control and technical aspects with the ball. Having that said, the skills on the ball are the most important aspect and Messi is unparalled at those in history of football. Some might be as good as him at passing or dribbling or shoting, but nobody other than Messi is all time great at all three most important aspects of football. There is really no debate. It is quite unlikely we will ever see someone as good as him in football.

Before him, it was Diego Maradona, also of Argentina, whose career in the 1980's just obliterated his competition... No player was that good and opponents would resort to physical violence on the pitch just to stop the 5' 5" guy who could play the game like nobody else in the sport.
Maradona is almost a diety in Argentina and in Napoli, Italy... the club he raised from obscurity to the championship titles.

As far as skill goes and how good of a player they are, nobody comes even close to Messi. He is BY FAR the greatest player to ever play the game. And even so, he still has like a million trophies and scored a million goals (even 91 goals in a calendar year, which is insane). No matter how you look at it, he's the GOAT. People prefer other players which is completely fine obviously, they're just not at the same level as Messi.
