"Let's say the brown pieces go first"
**Screams in chess**
*mehs in go*
As someone who's in the middle of reading said book, this excites me.
Great to hear!
I'm so glad this game crossed your radar. One of my favorites!
I was pleased to be able to check it out too :)
I absolutely love Tak, so awesome to see a how to play video from you on this that I can share with others now to easily introduce the rules to them :)!
Also great work as always on the setups too for instructions that helped concisely discuss multiple related rules (e.g. the capstone flattening stones at 06:10 )
Thank you for the kind words. I hoped I could cover the various cases that might come up to ensure there's no confusion when playing.
Great video loved the books and I can't wait to play the game
Thanks Josh!
Great video as always! Just got a travel edition of Tak and can't wait to play it!
I hope you have a great time with it!
Excellent explanation!
I want to play this game!
Thanks for checking out the video!
Such a great explanation. Just ordered the game (huge fan of the books) and cannot wait to play!!
Have a great time playing!
Fantastic game. I love it !!
This video explains this "Beautiful Game" very well !! 🤘
So glad you enjoyed!
Great video and explanation. Thanks!
You're very welcome Mike!
Fantastic explanations, thank you!
You're welcome! I appreciate that!
Excellent explanation! Thank you.
You're very welcome Andy!
Great video! Keep it up!
+Dean Doppelr Thank you Dean!
picked up the small tavern set, its not bad prob a bit pricey but its nice. it came with game and i bough a cloth board for it. great travel version now
Have fun playing!
A beautiful How To Play.
I'm suddenly hungry for the brown pieces in Chex Mix...
Ha! I get that :)
Two Questions:
Can you move one of your walls on your turn if it is not atop a stack?
When initially placing a piece, can you place it anywhere (except on a wall/capstone) or does it have to be an open space?
Thanks for all you do!
Hey Bruce, yep, you can move a stack that includes just a single wall piece. When placing a piece it must be in an empty space. Hope that helps!
Thank you. I won this game in a raffle and had never even heard of it before
Congrats on the win!
0:29 Anyone else thought it bizarre to hear Rodney say a swear word?
I wondered if that might catch peoples attention :)
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Good one!
This is a cool innovation to TicTacToe! The game looks very aesthetically pleasing - can definitely imagine this being played in LOTR haha
Glad you liked what you saw!
Great video! You did have one motion that could be a bit confusing to new players. At 05:58 you move a stack of pieces underneath a capstone, as opposed to moving a capstone on top of the pieces. Note to new players: you cannot move any piece underneath another piece, only on top.
Also, everyone should play online at Playtak.com, as it's a wonderful way to learn the game while you wait for your physical set :)
Yes, you're right. In doing that I was setting up the example, not making a game move, but it could confuse people if they didn't understand that's what I was doing.
When counting stacks for score once all of the empty spaces are filled, do you only count the stacks that you control with a flat piece on top? What about the stack that you control with a cap Stone or a standing piece on top?
Only those with a flat piece on top. Cheers!
czcams.com/video/FxW9Nk8139o/video.html
If you are moving a stack that is below the carry limit do you have to leave a piece in its original space, or is the first move free?
Hey Erik, I usually try to answer all rules questions on the videos, but I lent my copy of the game to a friend and I don't have the rules handy to check for you.
Wow, I don’t think you missed a single rule! Great job.
We try to ensure everything is covered. Thanks for the kind words!
You mentioned winning with roads, can you also win by making a complete wall from one side to the other?
Only flat pieces can form your road from one side of the board to the other.
I love your vids
Thanks Leo - very nice to have you watching!
Can you take a single piece and move it onto a stack, then in the same move take that stack and continue to drop off pieces in a straight line?
You have to make your movement based on the height of the stack when you first move it (in that case, your first movement was with a stack 1 high, so you'd have to stop after moving 1 space).
love the board design but can't say the same for the stones. still gonna buy it tho
Hope you enjoy!
If you control a stack of 3x in a 5x5 game; can you take the entire stack and move everything one space (leaving no piece behind)? Seems to be a good tactic to mop up your opponents pieces.
Yes, you can move just one space, leaving nothing behind.

How do standing pieces enter the game? Can they be flattened by anything other than capstones
When you place a piece, you can either place it upright, or flat. Only capstones flatten upright pieces.
I love this game and your channel but I can't find anywhere that answers whether capstones count in a flat win. Usually if it goes to a flat win both players have played their cap but it's not impossible to have a situation where one player hasn't. I'm imagining a situation where the winning player is only ahead by one stack and that includes his cap, while the other player has not played her cap. Would that be a win or a tie?Thoughts?
Hey Leonard, let's take a look at the rules for this one: "Flat Win: If either player runs out of pieces, or if the board is completely full, then the game ends immediately and the player with the most flat stones wins. Count only the flat stones on top of stacks, not those buried within stacks. If this count is tied, then the game is a draw."
This would suggest to me, that as stated in the video you only count the stacks with flat stones on top. Meaning capstone stacks are not counted.
That's what I thought as well, though the rules also state that "capstones combine the best aspects of standing and flat stones" and that would seem to imply that it is like a flat in every respect, plus some other properties. I know this is a real minutiae. Thanks for responding :)
Question. Can a stack only move and end, in the direction that it went from the start?
They move in a straight line, yes.

Thanks for the speedy reply.
Will there be a gameplay video? I remember Luke is good at these abstract games =D
We'll see!
+1 for a gameplay video 😀
I'm a bit confused. How does a standing piece end up on a stack? Can you place them there? Can they be moved?
You can move a piece onto a stack, including a standing piece (the restriction is that you can't move a piece onto a stack that *already* has a standing piece - unless you're moving your capstone (which knocks over standing pieces, including ones on stacks)).
I apologize if someone has pointed this out, but all the rules say that a capstone can be part of a winning road (reads as a flat stone). However if playing points, it does not count as a point.
Hey Gimini, it's been a couple years since I shot this, can you provide a time stamp for the section of the video you think is in error?
Remember the object is to play a elegant game.
So where can i get this game it seems the kick starter ended and it isnt in retail
I prefer not to recommend specific stores, but I've done some googling, and have seen it available for order (not pre-order, but for delivery right away)
The game looks completely different to the one I imagined when I read the book because IIRC Kvothe mentions multiple colours, not just chess style black and white?
I have to confess, as I haven't read the story, I didn't have any preconceived ideas.
However, as Pat was involved in the development, they probably didn't want to make it even more complex because if there is something Kvothe can't figure out after a few attempts it has to be hard as hell. :P
Did I miss something? How does the piece become upright? Is that one of your possible moves?

GAMEPLAY pls
Perhaps :)
i have a silly question, is the book any good? lol
I haven't read it, so I can't comment, but perhaps others have.
SirTyrin if you like fantasy novels, then the book is fantastic!
SirTyrin The series is called The Kingkiller Chronicles and the first book is called "The Name of the Wind". It's quite good!
It's a trilogy ("the kingkiller chronicles"), Patrick Rothfuss is currently writting the 3rd book.
I enjoyed the first 2 books, they are pretty good if you like fantasy novels.
Published by who now? I thought this was a family friendly channel. Haha!
Wait, unless the boards come apart, an 8 by 8 would require at least 4 boards, wouldn't it?
For that, you could use a chess board.
yeah, that's true.
Is there a reason why you do not say how much you like each of the games you show?
Hey Cameron, I talk about that here: czcams.com/video/p0Lv8LHadMc/video.html&t=10m55s
Thanks! Your answer makes sense.
Tak is thank you in Danish
Interesting to know!
can my cap stone flat my own wall?
Hey Eduardo, I'm always happy to help with rules questions, but if the answer is in the video (which it is), than I have to direct you there.
@@WatchItPlayed oops! sorry man! i found it here in the video just like you said!
thanks for the answer!!
Eduardo Tong Ribeiro You bet!
9:35 brown wins first in time
Hey Tylon, that's not what my rule book says - where do you see that?
@@WatchItPlayed when you picked up the pieces browns road was complete
@@TJTrickster Sorry Tylon, I'm not following what you are saying. I'd like to be able to address your comment, but I shot this 2 years ago, so I'd need a full explanation of what you are trying to communicate, not just fragments of what you're getting at.
@@WatchItPlayed when you lifted whites pieces Brown's piece was on top of the stack and his pieces were in a line of flat pieces by leaving Brown's piece on top allow in him to win when you put down the 1st piece at the time whites road is not finished due to a diagonal but Brown's has
Actions are considered to complete instantaneously. Although brown was first in the process, the action was not finished until the white's turn was over. So white won.
Why is the very first shot of the game in this video, the first five seconds, an illegal move on the board?
The intro animation is just action shots. The scene is shown later in the video where the audio explains what is happening there. That said, to prevent potential confusion that might be caused if someone stopped watching after the intro, it might have been good to consider a different shot. Something I'll consider in the future.
