Christine Blasey Ford on the cost of speaking out

  • In 2018, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, a university professor and mother of two, accused then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of assaulting her at a party while both were in high school. After her televised testimony, the allegations stirred a hornet's nest of controversy, and brought death threats to Ford and her family. Now, Ford has written a memoir, "One Way Back," about her experience speaking out. She talks with correspondent Tracy Smith about the costs of going public; the responses she received from survivors of sexual assault; and how she has no regrets for her decision.

I was date raped in college in 1969. It was at a college party where people were all around me. I tried to stop it, screamed for help and all I got was nothing. I remember that night as if it happened last night. My only consolation is that years later I heard that the rapist died in a car accident. I was relieved that he could no longer hurt anyone.

@@evansquilt Actually, she didn't. I expected to believe her when I first heard of her charge. But I listened to her whole testimony and was troubled that she couldn't remember important details - like when it happened (initially she was unsure of which year-sophomore or Jr, I think), whose house she was at (even just the name of kid who lived there), how she got there, how she got home. She couldn't remember any verifiable detail - details that could have verified her story, or refuted it. I'm about her age, and had a close all myself - a man tried to grab me in the high school parking lot one Friday night in 1981. I remain traumatized by it to this day, and parking lots at night bring it back. But I remember the details - you go over them in your head asking yourself what you did wrong. I wouldn't expect her to remember every single detail, but to be unable to remember any of that? I'm an independent and was expecting that Kavanaugh would have to withdraw - I was ok with that. But it troubled me that someone, telling a story that lacked any meaningful details, could push an event this far. And that thoughtful people could ignore the very real problems with the story. You can call me a 'troll', but you're not even attempting to address my very real concerns.

Scott. And you think you do? I was 4. Can’t recall the date, because I was 4. But, mom had a dr appointment. Took little sister. I stayed with “family friends”. It was summer, 55 years ago THIS summer. I can walk you to the exact spot in that yard, where the Boy Scout tent was pitched. The tent color, sleeping bag color, exactly what Burt and Ernie type striped shirt I wore with color matched shorts, my little white sandals. I even remember the smelly white t shirt he wore, the blue shorts and black shoes and knee high socks with the red rings at the top. Tell me again how trauma works. You know squat!

Yes, that's very common actually. Definitely more so in traumatic cases. Because it's due to your mind wanting to go into protection mode. So in these traumatic events, your mind closes off some or all memories from that experience. It's all part of your brain closing off parts of an experience that's extremely traumatizing. In my Psych degree studies, its Neuropsychologists that tend to really understand what happens in your brain, when different experiences happen, it's them who really know how to explain this so well. They know which neurotransmitters are affected and how, and which ones block memories, to keep you safe, or really, to keep you from having a nervous breakdown.

If you’re a victim of sexual assault, you need to report it. By not reporting it, you’re giving the assailant permission to do it to someone else. If it’s reported, it creates a record. The more that’s added, it becomes a pattern. Nothing might happen the first time, but once a pattern is established, it gives authorities something to put them away for as long as they can.

I feel like I need to defend the ones WITH integrity ... Sotomayor, for one, has been writing the TRUTH - along with very intense warnings - in her Dissents since drumpf took office. But yeah, the dudes on SCOTUS for sure are increasingly devoid of any integrity at all.

So right - wasn't it interesting how the vetting process was shortened or almost non-existent particularly with Coney Barret.
Indeed there is no longer any integrity in SCOTUS because of these 3 and how they got on the court. But this decline all started with the appointment of Clarence Thomas - thanks to Senator Biden, Chair Senate Committee for stopping the hearing before any other witnesses could testify to back up the testimony of Prof. Anita Hill.
Gee thanks Joe for starting the decline of SCOTUS !
