  • In collaboration with the Lake Hopatcong Commission and the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, residents living along the waterfront in Hopatcong Borough are participating in a pilot program that uses "socks" made of biochar to remove phosphorus from the lake. Biochar is a form of charcoal produced from organic materials such as wood chips and agricultural waste. When submerged in water, biochar acts like a sponge, effectively capturing and immobilizing phosphorus, making it unavailable for algae growth.
This promising solution to the lake's phosphorus issue was made possible through a 319h grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, which was redirected from an uncompleted stormwater project in Hopatcong.

Wouldn't the used biochar material be better used in gardens and compost heaps, instead of in a landfill?
