Great video! I watched several others before this and thought I'd have to remove pumps and wires, but you rightly said, "start from the sink and under the sink"... and that was exactly where my problem was. Always start with the easy fixes before digging deep. Diagnostics that require no tools or expertise should always be the first step in DIY. Thank you for this.
I have the exact same dishwasher as shown in the video. I followed the instructions and voila, I found a press-on fingernail blocking the end of the discharge hose. Oddly enough, no one in my family uses these. Thanks very much for your clear detailed info in this video. Tim
Yikes, it makes you wonder if someone lost their press on nail in food that you purchased and rinsed off. Or a guest picked it off and no one noticed. I am very happy this video helped you out. Learning this saved me a LOT of money.
This guy is a godsend. Simple and step by step. Awesome it fixed mine. I unhooked hose and drained it into a bucket. Not sure what the problem was but ill see if there is a block in the disposal
@@FROSTYLIFE the drain hose should be clipped as high as possible in the cabinet before it goes to the disposal. This stops water from a clogged "sink " from drying into the dishwasher.
How could anyone thumbs down this. Great video and fixed my problem. I had previously cleaned my filter, but didn't think to get underneath the filter. Sure enough, standing water, and some blockage that I was able to clear. Works perfect again. Thank you!
Great post! Your tips saved me a repair bill! The only thing I would add is if you live in an area with hard water, minerals can build up on the filters. Running a cycle with about a cup of white vinegar helped to clear that out and also disinfected the dishwasher.
I had NO IDEA the food processor had to be empty and completely drained!! I pulled my dishwasher apart to see if I had a blockage in the drain and nothing!! Until I found your video lol thank youuuu
First time seeing your channel- I did all of this, but unfortunately I had to extract the unit from the cabinet and pull the drain pump. Once removed, the impeller was jammed in place by a hard plastic tag about 1/2" x 1/4". Took the opportunity to clean out the pump and all the lines, put it back together and it's running like a champ. Great video.
I can't count how many times I've used this video as a reference as I fix the thing. It's a Kitchenaid - Whirlpools are the same. I've pulled the thing apart to clean it per this video. I've replaced the solid food grinder just now, as it was all screwed up. I've also opened it up and pulled solid junk (like toothpicks) out of the grinder, too. If your dishwasher isn't washing well - especially on the top rack - it's likely that your grinder is jammed with something solid or the grinder blade itself if done. It's a $9 part, available on Amazon. The other thing I've had to do with the dishwasher is to replace the door springs - that's not on this video but there are tons of videos on CZcams to help you with that. Thanks for the great work on this video!

Excellent detailed explanation. My blockage was right where the drain hose goes into the disposal. I removed the hose from the pump and used a garden hose to clear the entire line. Thank you very much.
Okay gang, a couple of things…if your dishwasher is throwing an OR or DR code and it’s not draining you have a pump issue. If you have a relatively new, even an older dishwasher, there’s a good chance your pump is just fine, you have something caught in your pump causing the the impeller not to spin. This is most likely glass. I’ve had the problem twice and both times it’s been a small shard of glass got through to the pump. I just finished putting my dishwasher back together after removing the shard of glass from the pump. I have a newer LG dishwasher. It’s running like a champ now. Forget all the other BS these people are telling you, as 9 times out of 10 something is caught in your pump, keeping the impeller from spinning. Just get into it, remove, put it back together and your Wife will think you’re a hero. You might even get some tonight if you fix it! 😉
Thank you so very much for your detailed breakdown of the different scenarios! The Cancel button, after cleaning the Air Gap worked to drain the water for me.. I feel jubilant 🎉 Thank you again💐

Very helpful video. I recently did some troubleshooting with my dishwasher. Turned out there was a piece of plastic stuck in the impeller, fun times. Thanks for posting :D
I finally got mine working. I got a Wet Vac and hooked it up to the hose the enters the sink drain. It sucked out something horrible because it smelled like something foul. The cancel button worked like a charm too
Answered my question about the small amount of water left standing, in my still under warranty dishwasher, not enough to visually signal trouble, but enough to cause problems with drying and smell in the summer. Thank you!
Great video. The Cancel button started the drain pump and cleared out the standing water so there was maybe 1/2 cup left under the filter. No water showing above filter. Wonderful. My question is, what is causing the water to stand initially? The pump gets rid of the majority of water but leaves water above the filter. The cancel button works (yea!) but why won’t it drain completely before using the cancel button. The Cancel button technique only runs the pump for another 20-30 seconds. Why isn’t it clearing the water to begin with. Is the cycle timing messed up? My drain hose goes into the PVC pipe behind the disposal. I took this apart, cleaned out the trap, etc. Again, great video. Really appreciate you posting it.
Can I ask what is that grey thing on the right do we have to clean that I also seen on TikTok that some people are putting salt somewhere to help mineralization with cleaning and water ?
Thank you very much for this video. You gave me all of the info that i needed to find the problem. It was a plastic stick of some sort that was stuck in the propeller. Appreciate you!
Nice tutorial. My problem is a little weird - it drains fine, but it's not washing well. It's quiet even though I set it to "tough". Do you think that's a pump issue? I took off all the filters / pumps / sprayer arms and tried to clean them out but my detergent packet still isn't dissolving and the dishes are dirty.
Our current dishwasher is having the same problem. I am finding out that it was not draining adequately or that the sync was full of Contaminated water and it was backing up into the dishwasher. Make sure your sinkest totally empty in no standing water before you use the dishwasher
@@FROSTYLIFE pulled out the whole thing and I think it's the pump. I tried cleaning it out since there were some debris in it but looks like it's new dishwasher time unless I can find my part for cheaper than 250.
@@mikeb6201 it is amazing how short the life of a dishwasher is. We have an average of 5 years, but shorter lately. We did not even bother putting a dishwasher in our lake home, and we live here.
I had a drainage problem on my Kenmore elite dishwasher. I could hear the pump working so I detached the drainage line from the sink and the pump. I augured it out and it was free, but after I reattached the line(hose) it still wouldn’t drain. So I assumed the pump was stripped and only making noise . After my wife decided to go over things she asked if I cleaned the hose. I did . Did I clean the ABS fitting under the sink that the washer hose is attached to ... no , better do that she says, well after I stuck a long piece of metal in it I struck a blockage. Well once I clean that out it was fixed . I just assumed that if the hose was clean just outside the ABS fitting it would be as well . Wrong. Hose off and on twice , draino, CLR, bailing it out multiple times. Just because I thought there’s no way it could be blocked at the fitting. My wife figured it out in five minutes. If your wife is not a handy as mine be sure to check the drainage line right to the S-trap under the sink.
You are 100% correct. Blockage can occur anywhere and everything should be checked. Your wife is very wise. Sometimes the drain port in the sink will be blocked by all the things that get stuck in the sink.
One missing hint that bite me: check your emergency drain pipe line. Sometimes small stuff can stuck there. No one mention that on CZcams. I learned it via hiring a plumber to fix my drainage issue.
Some dishwashers have a air break that comes up behind the sink. We've had plugs at the top where small chicken bones get stuck. The cover on the air break pops off, and you can clear such obstructions by unscrewing the plastic cap.
I no longer use dishwasher as often now that kids are gone, but I always wipe off food in all plates ( in compost bin) before putting in the dishwasher. It's a good way to prevent this from happening. Just a suggestion that I hope will help.
If your dishwasher is not draining, did you just replace your garbage disposal? Did you perhaps forget to knock out the drain plug on the garbage disposal?
Maybe this could help someone else. But my dishwasher was r draining and we did absolutely everything by checking the hose and baking soda and vinegar. Only to find out that it was the door! 3 months into moving into our house it stopped working. The door has always been super heavy and we believe that a sensor wasn't working properly. All it took was proping something up to the door and it started working right away. Now it's not a permanent fix but we spent 5 months trying to fix the same issue and never considered the door. Best of luck to everyone
I checked the drain lines under the sink and at the disposer and can hear the pump but not emptying the water. My drain line goes into an air gap, which then goes to the disposer. Checked that too. There was some gunk in there and I got it out but still not draining. Gonna pull the panel off the bottom and check the other end of the drain line. Cleaned the filters and there was some broken toothpicks down in the sump (PRE-RINSE YOUR DISHES PEOPLE). ANY other ideas before bothering with a pump?
I bought Model GDF630PSM4SS in September. It stopped draining after two weeks. The technician who was sent told me that the problem was that I bought GE Dishwasher in the first place. Not kidding! He told me he would buy a Bosch as all GE dishwashers are junk. It broke a week later and for the next 3 weeks I had to bail it out by hand, let it sit a day, and then it would work again for about 4-6 times. The 2nd technician ordered a part that did not need to be replaced, got it to work and then it failed again and would not drain. I had to buy a new dishwasher and the GE sits in my garage. GE told me they will not refund the money and would only replace it if the technician states in cannot be fixed. Stay away from GE.
I have this exact dishwasher or very similar (KDTE104ESS2). The worst appliance purchase I've ever made. Mine fills and drains, but doesn't circulate. Bad pump I'm guessing? It has failed after 2 years. The one it replaced lasted 15 years.

Hooked up a new garbage disposal, then washer wouldn’t drain. Everything seemed to drain fine from the sink? Finally broke out the instructions for the disposal, I had forgotten to remove the plug from the washer inlet! Good news is that from watching these videos, I now have a clean dishwasher.
What if I hit the drain button and don't hear a thing? My drain pump is not kicking on at all? I have replaced the drain pump and still the same thing. A lot of dirty water left at the end and will not drain. Could it be the control board?
Can be a one way valve (they say, lol).. a white tube on old ones.. a tiny red flapper on new ones.. both are next to the pump.. new ones the pump is a seperate part.. just info
I have a vintage classic KitchenAid. KDS-20C there is a pool of water inside. I took the filter off and couldn’t find anything in there - just water. I pressed cancel and it went through some cycles but more water was added and none drained. I would hear nose inside and some switching clip sounds at times but no water to the ABS below the sink drain. Is there a troubleshooting manual for these old dishwashers or has anyone else had this issue? It’s like an old corvette stingray and it should be preserved vs buying some new junk replacement. Thank you
I agree. Learning to take care of a quality machine is more important than purchasing new junk. Sounds like your pump is out or there is an obstruction. I am not aware of any manual for the older dishwashers.
Oh very cool. That is fantastic. I love that you found my vlog videos in addition to my DIY videos and that you enjoy them so much. Thank you so much for watching Frosty Life.
I press cancel and the water does not drain and no water flows through the garbage disposal at all. On the inside of the dishwasher i removed the spray arm and removed the filters(mine is not as nice if a dishwasher as yours so my filter is different) i inspected where the pump pumps the water out and i found no blockage. Then i did what you said and took off the hose to the garbage disposal and i found no blockages but no water came out at all. It seems the only thing left is to take out the dishwasher and check for a blocked hose on the dishwasher end correct? If its not the hose then it must be the pump right ?
Aaron P our dishwasher is doing the same as yours. it drains fine. I think that the water is not going through the sprayer. when we open the door you can feel the heat dry on and the dishes have no water on them. was you able to get yours fix
I have this same dishwasher and has been broke for quite a while. My father in law took a look and couldn’t fix so I’m assuming he checked the drain for obstruction. It was filled with water and when I hit cancel it makes a very light clicking sound just a couple times. Would you think that means the pump isn’t working?
I found out that something like that just might be a circuit board, which is expensive to replace, and they do not even know it that will actually fix it. Sometimes it is best just to get a newer one, but perhaps have a reputable appliance company give you an estimate and see what price they would sell you a replacement.
Thanks for the reply. Turns out It not only did it have an obstruction in the drain pipe; we turned it on the side and took off the hose connecting the propeller to pump (I think) and it was jammed with debris and hair 😣. Removed that and cleaned the hose then had to do the reset on the computer part. Hi-temp/ heat dry alternating 10 times. (After turning circuit breaker back on) and it works! After about 6 months it finally works again. Thanks to your video inspiring me to check it out And showing me where things were. When my husband came home and I was elbow deep in the dishwasher he was obligated to help me. 😂 Thanks!
I know how to manually do the drain on my GE diswasher...can't hear the pump come on. I even checked the float to make sure it is telling the system there is water. Next step is to pull the dishwasher and see if there is an obstruction at the pump.
I noticed that you don't have your drain line above the sink level at any point. This creates a siphon problem letting the stinky water to travel from the disposal into the dishwasher.
I just raddled/shook the hose a couple of times and then the water started to drain. Whatever was stuck in the hose flushed away when I shook it. Didn't even have to take anything apart lol
Another thing it could be is the garbage disposal dishwasher plug, whether you are putting in a dishwasher for the first time or putting in a new garbage disposal.
Thanks for the great video! I also noticed that the door has become really heavy - slamming down when i do not open it manually. any tips on what is causing it and a fix? ...I also saw your other video/channel....you are a great narrator :)!!
i have it unplug but it still filling up with water could it be garbage disposal clog up i have a GE dishwasher WHAT DO YOU RECOMEND I WAS TOLD IT COULD BE THE VARIBLE WASH PUMP
I hear mine washing but can’t hear it drain at all in the draining cycle I tried washing it on multiple cycles thinking it could have been the electrical part but none of the draining works on any cycle including just the drain cycle there was a lot of soapy water still on the bottom

Thank you so much for watching Frosty Life. I do mostly daily vlogs, but I am also starting to create some DIY videos.
How would an obstruction get into the drain hose with the screens on and past the pump?
Thank You, clean out thr scren . Hit cancel and its draining.
Weird trivia: Your first dishwasher fix-it video is how I found your channel :)
Hey I have that same dishwasher it’s less than a year old won’t run and I’m not sure how to get it into diagnostic mode any ideas?
Aaron P our dishwasher is doing the same as yours. it drains fine. I think that the water is not going through the sprayer. when we open the door you can feel the heat dry on and the dishes have no water on them. was you able to get yours fix
It sounds like your dishwasher is having a water supply problem rather than a drain problem. Check to see if it fills with water at the beginning.
Thanks!
Thanks,just fix mine 😎
I know how to manually do the drain on my GE diswasher...can't hear the pump come on. I even checked the float to make sure it is telling the system there is water. Next step is to pull the dishwasher and see if there is an obstruction at the pump.
I noticed that you don't have your drain line above the sink level at any point. This creates a siphon problem letting the stinky water to travel from the disposal into the dishwasher.
Noticed the same thing.
You don't have a high loop or an air gap.. all states have codes for that.. tisk
It is what the last owner did I guess.
Thanks for the great video! I also noticed that the door has become really heavy - slamming down when i do not open it manually. any tips on what is causing it and a fix? ...I also saw your other video/channel....you are a great narrator :)!!
there is a spring mechanism that reduces the weight of the door. it will be near the hinge between the layers of the dishwasher.
Would it not draining cause it to stop mid cycle?
I knew from the accent that I came to the right place. Thank you sir! Vikings suck though...go Packers
i have it unplug but it still filling up with water could it be garbage disposal clog up i have a GE dishwasher WHAT DO YOU RECOMEND I WAS TOLD IT COULD BE THE VARIBLE WASH PUMP
How often does that happen?
I wish I had found this before I totally took the inside of my dishwasher apart 😅 pretty sure it's the hose at this point
I hear mine washing but can’t hear it drain at all in the draining cycle I tried washing it on multiple cycles thinking it could have been the electrical part but none of the draining works on any cycle including just the drain cycle there was a lot of soapy water still on the bottom
my dishwasher fills and drains, but doesn't wash. soap doesn't dissolve. Just gets kinda hot and wet (presumably from humidity)
Mine doing same thing!
