The Eurovision Song Contest 1974 was the 19th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Brighton, United Kingdom and was organized by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), who agreed to host the event after Luxembourg, having won in both 1972 and 1973, declined to host it for a second successive year on the grounds of expense. The contest was held at the Brighton Dome on 6 April 1974 and was hosted by Katie Boyle for the fourth and final time (having hosted the 1960, 1963 and 1968 editions).
Seventeen countries took part in the contest, with France being absent and Greece competing for the first time this year.
The winner was Sweden with the song "Waterloo", performed by ABBA, who would later go on to become one of the best-selling acts in pop music history.

A really good year it was! Norway, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Greece, The UK with the ever so lovely Olivia Newton-John (RIP), Italy with the wonderful Gigliola Cinquetti and of course the magnificent ABBA.
@dguri 👏👏😊Very well said❗It was the official "Arrival" of ABBA onto the world stage.

Please do a list of all the interval acts every year in Eurovision
It's a thing not many aware of, even huge Eurovision fans, and some of them are really funny in the early contests
i mean there are a lot of them, even with just the ones in the final
i mean just from 2016-onwards we've had:
- Justin timberlake
- Love love peace peace
- Mans zelmerlow
- Onuka
- Jamala
- The opening ones
- Salvador sobral
- Dana international, Ilanit & netta in the opening
- Switch song
- Netta
- Madonna
- Rock the roof
- Music binds us
- Duncan laurence
- Laura pausini in the opening
- Mika
- Maneskin
And i'm probably forgetting others
@@lexezlao So in that case there are 2 options:
he will include only the older years, when there was only one interval act, or he will include the longest in every year
That's a good idea. Maybe per decade or something, so the videos don't get too long. Or separate videos for the semifinal acts.
@@lexezlao you forgot Gigliola Cinquetti at the final when she sung her song "non ho l' etá"
One of the most important years of the contest: The arrival of more pop songs, Portugal starting their revolution the moment E depois do adeus starts, Olivia Newton-John (Rip) singing for the Uk, Gigliola Cinquetti come back, Abba's win
Iconic year for sure
In Portugal the carnation Revolution was just 19 days after this contest and was one of the signals for the starting of the revolution...
Abba❤
CONGRATS WITH 40K! 🥳
Greatest Eurovision channel ever. Can’t believe he only has 40K subs
totally agree
I liked Portugal's entry and it came last!!!!
I'll probably say this out of being tired of listening to Waterloo almost every year at Eurovision shows and events, but for me Gigliola Cinquetti really stood out. Very magical song, beautiful lady, wonderful voice. It's so much better than the tacky melodrama Italy sells us every year since 2015... It feels genuine, not a score-climbing-for-sure formula.
Yugoslavia 74 is in my alltime top 5. great prog rock! Spain had their best entry ever. Israel and Sweden Also great ❤️🎶🎸
So many fantastic songs this year! One of my favorite shows
thoroughly enjoyed this. old results videos are great
1974, what a great contest it was!!! Dont agree with most of the results (not talking about ABBA, of course) but, unfortunatelly, that is what happens most of times.
Actually I love the contests of the 70's, really love!!! The 80's are extremely cheesy with just a few good songs. Of course, once more, it is just my opinion.
you can clearly see why ABBA won this by a landslide. They immediately stood out on this lineup.
I felt the first half of the songs where a mish mash of the same stuff. If you didn't pay attention and only was listening, you could easily miss when the song switches.
Are you sure we saw the same? Many great and diverse songs. Spain, Israel, Yugoslavia, sweden
My TOP 5
1.Italy
2.Sweden
3.The Netherlands
4.Yugoslavia
5.Luxembourg
Finland badly underrated, as always, in those days ;) Such an iconic year, so many of these songs are classcics!!
The problem was and still is... who are the juries. I really think the jury is very important but it would be important to have juries from different backgrounds.
My top: United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Italy, Sweden.
Everyone here who are rating their top 5 seem to forget Natati La Khaiai.. the lyrics are so good and clever, the music is top tier, if only any of the commenters here knew Hebrew 🤷♀️
If anyone here wants some based music, listen to Kaveret, or כוורת in Hebrew (beehive)
Thanks for this nice video.
What a year. There were many different genres, love it. I love also this new kind of video with all the entries of the year ❤️
Qué maravillosos años

Si was best
Simplemente el año de ABBA. España con Peret, vergonzoso.
That year favourite for win was France. I think with France in contest Italy would win that year, because France would took many points from Sweden, The Netherlands and Luxembourg.
We are so lucky France was not in
Wait, Olivia Newton-John was on Eurovision? Grease and Physical Olivia Newton-John?
yes!
Something tells me that UK and AU are singing her entry, in the interval act.
I see they recycled the hanging tinsel from 72 and reused some of this set in 98 :-D
Ahhh back when eurovision was just a song contest
Yep. And before EBU started to treat it as a target audience event which they sadly do now
Three countries shared the 4th place. If it had been today the one with the most televotes would have got the 4th place, but since there were no televotes then, the next tie breaking rule would be the one with points from the most countries.
The UK got points from 8 countries, Luxembourg got points from 9 countries, and Monaco from 10 countries. So Monaco would've been 4th, Luxembourg 5th and the UK 6th. But that doesn't matter now, it's just a nerd fact, they all shared 4th place, since they didn't have the tiebreaking rules then.
It only applies to who got the most points (like 1991).
@@silvergir89 No, the tiebreaking rules apply to all, not just the ones who got the most points. Like in 2022, Finland ended up in 21st place and Czech Republic in 22nd place, even if both got 38 p in total, because Finland had more televoting points.
Due to the tie breaking rules, Finland became the winner of those two in the tie break, and got the 21st place while Czech Republic in 22nd place.
@@Asa...SIn the 2022 Contest if there were two countries sharing the same amount of points I think the rule favoured whichever of them had performed earlier in the running order
@@sfinn85 Well, if that had been the case, then Czech Republic would've ended up in the 21st place, and Finland in the 22nd place, as Czech Republic performed 1st in the running order, and Finland performed 4th in the running order.
But it was Finland ended up in 21st place, and Czechia in 22nd place.
Great video. My top 5:
1. The Netherlands
2. Portugal
3. Sweden
4. Italy
5. Greece
El año en que conocí a Olivia Newton-John, y le compre su single. En España era desconocida.
The loveliest dress was worn by the Irish contestant very Hollywood 1940s
I can't explain why, but Waterloo annoys me. I love ABBA, but not this song
And I still love the fact of ABBA's victory, the most famous winners of ESC
It's that line. "The history book on the shelf, is always repeating itself". No, Sweden, when you speak (or sing) English, you are banned from the present continuous!
abba annoys me
My winner: 1:31
Same :)))
@@jezinlv6516 taste

Norway deserved better
abba was a deserving winner tbh everything else is no where near the quality of waterloo
Germany should‘ve won.
