- The story of my (Keturah Brumfield) departure from the religion of Jehovah's Witnesses. The simple truth without diving in to the specifics of my research.
This video is tailored to my family and friends who I did not have an opportunity to speak with before I left. They now shun me because of my choice to disassociate myself from Jehovah's Witnesses.
At the time it was all too painful to bear and I needed to step away quickly with my family to help us find sanity and meaning beyond the skepticism and loss.
You did the unthinkable. You did your homework. You looked up their history. You asked questions. You began to think for yourselves. When you find out that the truth isn't what you were told, it is so very, very liberating.
The first step to finding out the truth about anything is to figure out that you do not currently have the truth. When it comes to the Watchtower Organization, all it takes is a little time doing some research online and you will find out that the Watchtower is not only NOT the truth, but it is a Luciferian, Masonic, Satanic Cult!!! Then you can go looking for the truth!
Whatever your path takes you just keep in mind Jehovah's witnesses as a inter'l brotherhood never go to war, I was raised 50's voted, major Christmas, birthday's, later on just my own musing to myself, I was Catholic, as nice as all were in my neighborhood. Later on I meditating on religious things. That many mainstream religions blessed their parisher young Bible based families to sent them to ww1&2 to kill their neighbors others. Also most religions in American dropped an atomic bomb on Japan killing radiation where. Their skin fell off and they died a horrible death. However I noticed that not one Jehovah's witness participated in opening up the atomic bomb age we now live in. My dear friend told me the horrors of world war ll was demonic, although being in his last days of his life he being really in combat said he regretted (Catholic and his priest blessed him &other young men to go to Germany and kill others, he was never a witness, but I know he wished he never was blessed to dupe into going to war. This is just a thought . No matter what religion you are, most people know this scripture at Luke 10:27 to paraphase love your neighbor as yourself....you all have the beautiful gift of free will you it wisely. My mum and dad are Circuit Overseers, my brother has been in bethel for 15 years, I have pioneered most my life and "served" in a 3rd world county for almost 3 years, and me and my lovely wife just woke up and DA also. Good for you! Enjoy your real life!

+Chapter For Freedom Hi Keturah, I'm a former Jehovah Witness also and now I just identify myself as just a Christian now. I was raise around it for 24 years and half my family is JW too. I was tired of being pressured to go to the meetings, service, assemblies, and conventions so I finally moved out my parents house and now I can finally move at my own pace spiritually. I see nothing wrong with JWs but I hate when its used wrong and when it creates division. Everyone has their own personal journey spiritually and you don't have to identify yourself as a JW to receive spiritual blessings. I advise you to still continue to read the Bible and share the spiritual benefits with your family.
I hope you're thinking, that she's going to reject God and Christ. Just like you have done John Cedars. We all have been lied to in different religions. Should We stop us from searching for God and Christ.no it shouldn't.

Thanks for sharing!! There must be thousands of us with a similar story. When I left the JW's, my so called family would upon seeing me, cross the road rather than acknowledge my existence. Some sent me 'Get Well Soon' cards! It was as if I was sick or had a disease! I now have a great family and circle of friends that showed me people outside the cult were not so bad after all. Thankfully my kids will never have to go through what we did.

I really understand your reasonings. I can remember when my children were smaller and I was getting after them for something. When I told them they were acting bad my son quietly asked me if that meant he was going to die at armageddon. I had to fight back the tears as I told him no not at all. It was then that I knew that I cannot let my children grow up with this toxic thinking. It was a huge wake up call for me.

Keturah, again, kudos. So nice. So true. So strong. I'm so proud of you. Your boys are lucky to have a mom looking out for their happiness with maturity and soundness. Truth sets us free. And freedom is the best. 9 years out for us and the novelty may never wear off. To all of those still sitting in those kingdom halls, please know that those of us being shunned, are not out to corrupt you and harm you. We still love you and miss you and feel sorry for you being blind out of fear they have instilled in your hearts... You shun us for fear of your own safety. You know not what you do. But remember 1 Jo 4:8: no fear in Love." Fear and Love cannot coexist. You can Choose Love. NO JW is Free to love from their heart or else you could not shun us. You have to be ready at all times to drop your loved ones if an elder body slaps a label on them. So sad. We know you want to love us, but you are limited, constricted by fear for your own family's safety and for fear that the devil has us and he'll get you too. This is a FEAR based religion.
Anyone can see this lovely young woman, Keturah, is not someone to fear, but rather to admire, to support such earnest, and courage. Listen to the song, Imagine, by the Beatles and imagine a world without religion to divide us. WT doesn't like you to have time to think and they filter all your reading, its suspect if its isnt from them.. but listen to your heart.. .you know deep down Love is the answer. I tear up as I type this out for my own experience remains very close to my heart...
We don't shun people we love and judge them as wicked- without so much as a conversation with them, leaving that in blind trust to an imperfect elder body governed by an imperfect WT org/governing body. Dont put your trust in nobles... man dominates man to his injury. WT is a prime ex of the blind leading the blind. Look into it. So many facts. Just be brave enough to ask and reach out for support like this young lady did, and I did. There's no time like the present moment. You'll never get it back. Live, love, laugh now. Big hugs!!
There are more ex-Witnesses than Jehovah's Witnesses. You're not alone. And this is a very brave thing you have done. I considered DAing myself, mostly to stop being harassed by local JWs, but I never did. I had it easy in some ways. My wife is a JW but none of my relatives are. I was a convert and a very unhappy one at that.

30 years ago, as a young mother in your shoes, I didn't have the access to resources you have now to get the answers. Then, I went on gut and it's been a struggle. I didn't know about dissociation letters. Eventually I was DF. My children, thankfully, were raised with more options and open minds. I did need a lot of time. The public library was my resource then. All I can say is how proud I am of you.

The same thing happened to me as well. I started doing research to prove their teachings correct but it didn't happen that way. It all hit me like a ton of bricks.

Oh my goodness, your story is my story! I did the same thing 35 years ago, and once I knew the truth behind the truth, there was no question of me remaining in that cult of lies...so I disassociated myself from them, and I've never looked back! Once I made my break and was completely free, and on the road to recovery and deprogramming my brain from all the lies and garbage Id been taught since I was just a little tiny kid, I started to see the world and my life through a new set of eyes. I discovered that I can and must enjoy my life right here, right now, and not wait for "the new system". Thank you for sharing your story. 💕
In the information age, I imagine this is the story of 1000's of JW's. In the end I think great parents decide not to let their children pay for their "going along" with what usually amounts to a family tradition.
perfect answer most grow up doing what their parents do or teach like I wonder why my mom lied about the tooth fairy or easter bunny which im 35 now I'm not crazy its just I always questioned things anyway no harm done to my soul lol but if they blame all the good and bad on God you will leave an atheist almost because you never did your own research you always read along at bible study not even ask questions or at meetings and I'm not a jw my fiancé is so I listen to meetings over the phone a few times and I'm wondering does anybody question anything not to disagree but to be explained a bible study is when you ask all the hard questions but noone ever does and she told me no matter what meeting or study every hall has the exact same literature so if you miss Tuesday you can find out Thursday and I'm like that sounds like a production so I'm trying to get her to critically think and my very first question when we met I said if I believe in God as well as you whats the difference? she said its complicated though the biggest thing I learned from this video is she also became a witness because her mother was one and if you just join a gang your kids probably gonna do they same when they grow up especially if there parents are involved dig this her elders found out about me and told her you know you have privileges rite! be careful of wolves in sheep's clothing we know nothing of him so make a wise choice so she instantly slows down on our progress and says they come first im like wtf how can they tell you who to love or not if its Gods will you found a ritcheous man outside of the religion thats even better knowing you have strict policies which aren't even all biblical they brought up unequally yoked I said we are your playing God and have no rite to you dont own her were Gods property rite anyways thanks this video explains alot and I have done hours of research and its sad most jws have not done any and will leave it in the hands of 7 men claiming to be Gods roommate gtfoh

Critical thinking, knowledge, and education are often what destroys the deception of cult like mentality. I also disassociated myself, but I honestly cannot imagine having to have that conversation with my children, and doing that as a family. It was hard enough doing it alone and losing my friends and having this conversation with my mother. I commend you and your husband's bravery in being open and honest with your children and giving them real information and choices, something you never had as a witness. It's no surprise you're happy and doing well.

So glad you found your way out. Looking back I can see how I too was festering under the surface for years before my time to leave the org came. I am so happy for you and your family. This is the second video I watched today of testimony of leaving JW's from the imprisonment of the Org. I am filled with joy right now and so very thankful you're out.
You are so brave Keturah! Congrats for sharing your experience. It's incredible how ex-JWs like discovered the truth about the "truth" in a very similar way. Thank you so much for sharing! Your story sounds a lot like mine. No disfellowshipping for me - just disbelief and a letter. I don't know how it all started. I had little doubts here and there that accumulated throughout my teens. By the time I was 19 I only had two reasons to stay - family and friends. It's so hard to leave... By 21 I was finally ready to leave it behind.
I'm so glad I did. I miss those people so much, but I couldn't live my life that way anymore. The anguish of sitting through those meetings and hating every word that they would say on stage... Of course I had my apostate stage too lol. It gets easier. You'll dwell on it less and less as time goes on.
What friends I found ppl to be really fake and everything was conditional

Very powerful. Twenty years ago I went through a very similar thing. Fortunately, the internet came around just in time for me to do some serious research. Research that I was hell bent on for several years, until I came to the conclusion that the Watchtower Society was and could not be "God's" organization. Best wishes to you and your family.

Until then, that teaching is nothing more than a made up fable found nowhere in the bible.

I was born into the religion and I disassociated myself from the JW's before
entering the Army. It was never a dream to become a soldier for obvious reasons but it was the most important decision of my life. This was the fastest and most reliable route to deprogramming. That decision made it possible that I wouldn’t live a dismal life as a JW. No pun intended.
What disturbed me during my early teens was the level of control. Every single aspect of my life had some level of control by the religion. Had I not resisted, I would have alienated myself from my peers at school which could have resulted in a terrible scar during my adolescent years. Armageddon
was always close at hand which resulted in the urgency at the tasks at hand of converting and spreading the good news of god’s kingdom. I logged between 10-15 hours a month in the field ministry. I started working at age 15 just to avoid the meetings and field service. I was totally embarrassed
to market such babble in the field.
Doctrinal: The generation of 1914 was talked about weekly during the meetings and at the conventions. That flagship doctrine was shelved when they realized that it would fail miserably (New Light). The New Light is evidence of men who are not inspired by God because theoretically God cannot make false predictions.
Please don’t misunderstand me, I am definitely not peddling a religious
belief to you. In my strong opinion, all religions can be placed in the same basket. A basket were critical thinking is frown upon and credulity is welcomed. Just break free and don’t buy into the fear which is used to control you.

I too, wish you had explained more on what woke you up. I left in 1982 and hung around until early 1993, then I left for good, never to go back. Research was done the hard way back then.
We all have such different stories that led to the same thing. Really an act of God that we broke out of the trance of the Watchtower lullaby! That trance we were in wore off and we all had no choice but leave, one way or another!

love your story, great video... i just recently awaken too & you do try soo deeply to prove it as truth & the more u try the more you find & realize the opposite... there was also that 1 thing that did it for me as well, the very foundation just crumbled & also for the love of my child you make decisions for them... great video
Beautiful video. I never got baptized. Always felt so unnecessary and perfunctory. I had already spent my childhood doing what someone else told me I HAD to do. Now I'm telling that to myself?? Can't do it. I didn't do a lot of research either. I just said getting baptized is too hard and I'm too tired lol. I needed to be free finally. You know you're tired when getting to Paradise just sounds too much like going through hell when Paradise could be right now. I would love to hear the specifics of what you found out in your research that made you realize you were not in the truth. Thank you for sharing your story. I applaud your honesty and courage. If everyone would do some independent research they would know the truth about "the truth". Glad you hold yourself to a higher standard as a parent instead of forcing your boys to live with questions and doubts. You are an awesome parent.
I had some problems when attending the Jehovah's Witness kingdom hall... My mother is still a JW, but I decided to leave it was a bad experience for me. I don't understand their ridiculous rule of no beard...

So enjoyed your video which struck so many chords with me and I'm sure many others who have left and are leaving the jws. Your honesty and emotion really evident and would love to know what things you researched and started to wake you up. The depression you refer to a common feeling for jws and your life gets so much better once you realise why and can start releasing your self from it and yetis it's like a grieving process and at the end you can truly start living and enjoying life in the here and now.
Very nice video. Your story is very similar to mine. I wanted to be a Pioneer and always felt inadequate at the door, so I decided to research the subjects that we talk about so I would be able to represent Jehovah well. I also had my own questions about specific doctrine that I always felt fuzzy about the explanations. The more I researched, the more I was shocked about what I was learning. It was upsetting to have your whole concept of life and God turned upside down. I prayed daily for God to show me what he wanted me to see and lead me in the direction that I should go. And like you, it was not with the Witnesses. Like you, I am not able to fake it and deliberately teach things that are not true or things that are rules that are not able to be backed up by scripture. It was good to see you.

I've done the same. Sadly, that has cost me my family. But the way you describe your feelings about studying and commenting etc.; I really identify with that. There is an inherent superficiality and emptiness to the Watchtowers teachings. People who have a real desire for answers and are motivated to make the effort to make sense of what they're experiencing are never content to be spoonfed by the society.

You seem really happy to have left the organization which was clearly for the better, it wasn't in your heart anymore, or idk if it ever was but yeah. I was born and raised in a Jehovah Witness household, my dad being an elder in the congregation and my mom in the truth for 30+years and I told them after years of studying that I didn't think I was ready to get baptized because I still felt I needed to learn more and they excepted me for who I was, they were totally on board with me figuring out what was in my heart as apposed as me getting baptized in to a religion that I didn't really understand or felt like I was forced to. I am super happy to still have my JW's family around and supporting me, and I still support them and think that they are some of the most kind, generous people I will ever have the privilege of meeting, and I still dig the rad, informative articles on the awake magazines! I was brought up a JW and got disfellowshiped at 23 years old. However I stopped believing in Jehovah just 2 years ago (age 35!)
When I left, ALL my family were still JWs. Now, every single family member is out! Even my 90 year old nan who has been a Strong JW from a young age and an elder uncle who was on the hospital liaison committee! People are finally seeing the lack of love in the organisation. They are waking up to the brainwashing and mind control.

Your story is my story but you woke up sooner than I did. So my children had to live the jw life thru school. It did some damage but they know we love them and have apologized for our ignorance. They are living their lives the way they want to now and we are part of it. We have not disassociated ourselves because I have a mother who is a devout jw that we need to take care of in her aging years. It is really hard, I want to just leave and have nothing to do with anyone from there because I feel like they are all so stupid in their thinking), just as I used to be. Now that I am off, I don't know where to go or what to think. I want to believe in God but I really don't think he is there. But as each day goes by life becomes more precious. I moved to Brazil almost 7 years ago and finally this January of 2016, I visited my parents in the States and had another chance to talk to my dad about the Witnesses. She spent her whole life filled with guilt, berating herself for not having done enough indoctrination to keep her kids in the false and lying 'truth'. Hi Keturah, Beautiful explanation. It was much the same for me after 40 plus years. My grown son had woken up and he kept asking me to explain things that WT taught and did. I finally actually heard myself giving the usual JW answers and I just couldn't do it anymore. I couldn't look my beautiful son in the face and act like he should accept illogical and actually cruel at times behavior as truth. I couldn't ask him to question his perceptions when in reality his perceptions made a lot more sense than WT! As you showed in your case, a mother's love is a very powerful thing! That was the beginning of the end for me (although looking back, I also had doubts that I quickly submerged for years.)Anyway, thanks for sharing your story. There is not a basic formula for people who have exited the organization. The reasons are complex and are not easily defined. Some people provide scriptural based reasoning for disassociating themselves from the organization while others just exercise their critical thinking faculties which were suppressed by the organization. This alone is all the fuel that former witnesses need. The very organization that publishes in the Awake magazines to have an open mind while at the same time banning certain reading material that is critical of the organization. I'll give you food for thought: "Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened." This generation died out in the 1st century so what does this say about sweet baby jesus? The bible was written by men during the infancy of our existence on this earth. It is filled with magic, supposed miracles, human sacrifices, war, murder, rape, misogyny, slavery, and a morphine trip in Revelations. Fear and guilt are being used masterfully by the organization to keep you and millions of other JW's in the fold.

Personally this was something I learned much later than waking up, as there are bigger more fundamental issues with faith as a concept and religion in general that I learned my way out of through philosophical and scientific education. Witnesses afterall are not the only ones that abuse children. Nearly all fundamentalist religions do so in one severe manner or another. Sexual is only especially bad because the same religions' own prudishness magnefies attention to it. Physical mutilation and indoctrination can, and do, have far more impact than sexual abuse and these are largely ignored.

Dear Keturah. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Even after 5 years it helps people to listen to you. I found myself in your story 4 months ago. My husband had to do most of the research because I had not this much time with our 2 kids (2 1/2 and 9 month at this time), but I was finally ready to listen to the things he had to say and we decided to ask questions to be sure it is the truth before we start to teach it to our kids.
And after we found out the truth about the truth, we had no choice but to leave. We lost everyone. My husband grew up as a JW and lost his whole family without asking what the matter was. I spent 8 years in the organisation and had to learn that the friends I had were never real friends. I am very happy for my kids to grow up without all the pressure and for us to not be 'something super special' anymore and having the chance to enjoy the beauty of life You helped me a lot to not feel alone. It takes a lot of courage to take that step. I applaud you. You and your husband care about whether what you preach, what you believe, what you teach your kids is true or not. Sadly, despite how much JWs like to call their beliefs "the truth", there are far too many of them, like my family, who clearly don't care about whether their beliefs are true or not. Like you, when I left I was also suspected of "wanting to live a life of sin", because some JWs can't come to terms with the reality that someone can make an intellectual decision to leave the organization. I would like to offer you this piece of advice if you're still having any doubts whatsoever: If you haven't done so already, sit down and read the bible for yourself. Not any professed "interpretation" of the bible, but the actual bible itself. It is a long, and mostly, profoundly boring and repetitive book, but it's well worth the read. I guarantee you will come to the same conclusion I did: the whole thing is a lie. The bible is not what we are brainwashed to believe it is.... but I will let you come to your own conclusions on that.
If you seek God with all your heart then you'll find Him. That's been my experience & I've never been a JW & wasn't raised in a church. It's when you realize you're under an Infinite Creator Intelligence's judgment that you realize you need a Savior. That's who Jesus Christ is . The reason we don't KNOW God is bc we are estranged from Him by our sins. The WTS doesn't teach about trust in Jesus. They teach He made a way for us to earn our salvation. When you trust in His death as payment for sin & believe in His resurrection you'll experience His peace & joy of your sins having been forgiven. Then when you study or read Scriptures, they'll come alive! You may exp. the Rheama Word of God or His supernatural healing like I did.

Keturah, I grew up on the other side of the hill in Walnut Creek. I had friends that went to liberty union, a few years before you. I "lost" my best friend (from Pleasant Hill) to the JW organization and I was watching videos of people who had left JW and why. I guess I was sort of wishfully thinking that if I learned more about it I might find a way to get my friend back. I don't know you or Don but I am proud of you both. I so wish I had allowed myself the freedom to explore my own questions much sooner cause that's all it takes to free any one in there. If I didnt fear man, and fear the penalty of the answers, I sure wouldn't have wasted 42 years including my prime years in this mind control cult. Thank you for your video, Keturah. I watched it to the end. I was hoping you would say that you found the truth about Jesus Christ while studying but you did not state this. I hope and pray that you keep seeking for truth if you haven't found it yet and that you look into the biggest WT lie which is that Jesus is Micheal the Archangel. I hope and pray that you keep searching the scriptures (not the NWT but another such as the KJV, ESV, NASB, NIV etc, or go directly to the original languages if you wanted to really study) and compare all of these translations to the NWT to see where they have corrupted scripture and used it to fit their doctrine.
