    NY retired his number before Edmonton did. His cup win in 94 did a lot for NY. A year after the first word trade center bombing... NY's were still trying to re build itself. 1940 was a long time ago. Before USA got involved in WWII. He helped rebuild faith in NY and faith in the rangers. He brought back something to NY that unless you're a rangers fan you wouldn't understand.

    • @broadstreet21
      @broadstreet21 Před 5 měsíci

      I have to ask why the 1994 Cup meant THIS much to New York City as a whole, including non-hockey fans. Because New York happened to have won four Cups barely more than a decade ago, with the Islanders. Granted, this Cup would have meant more to Rangers' loyalists, sure, but the rest of the city?
      And while we're at it, New York happened to have won a pair of NBA titles in the 70s, and not to mention the cavalcade of MLB world series by the Yankees (and even a couple more by the Mets in the 80s). Oh, and they just won a pair of Superbowls in 1987 and 1991, just a few years earlier.
      With all these victories, how is it that the Rangers one victory in 1994 still means that much? It's not like hockey is even the most popular sport in New York - wouldn't baseball, basketball, and football be more popular?
      Meanwhile, I can tell you that Cup would have meant far more to Vancouver than it ever could to New York. Because, unlike the Rangers, who at least won a couple Cups a distant while ago, the Canucks never won one. Ever. Every time they had a chance, their light gets snuffed out, until their best chance passes you by. Also, unlike the Rangers, the Canucks are the only show in town that actually matters. Sure, they have a football team that won Grey Cups, but the CFL isn't that big of a deal. They now have a soccer team, but it's hardly much of a draw. Hockey is the only one that really matters in Canada. If you take it from them, they'll be cursing you for the rest of your life - nobody's really gotten over 1994 or 2011. In fact, Messier is still cursed to kingdom come in Vancouver - legend has it Lays' chips sell poorly in Vancouver because Messier endorsed it.

    Messier was traded by the Rangers in 1997 because he was done! Muckler was dead set against his return in 2000. Muckler wanted to build a young team and Messier did not fit in. Dolan brought Mess back as a side show act to fill seats. His return was disastrous for New York as he led them to the golf course in four straight seasons. • @petermccormack2525
      @petermccormack2525 Před 9 lety

      Best player of all time? Gretzky, hands down. Best Captain? Hard to argue against Messier. Messier asked for a trade to a very questionable organization in NYR at the time, a team that generally underperformed when it mattered most, and a revolving door of coaching staffs. Messier won his first 4 cups with Gretzky as the captain, but when Gretzky left and most people wrote off the Oilers like they were this years Miami Heat without Lebron James, Messier took over, wins the cup again WHILE collecting the Hart Trophy. (Winning the Hart Trophy and then the cup shows you this guy wanted to prove to his team they could win without Gretzky) When Gretzky got to LA, He never got them a cup win. Messier took over NYR and won the cup, he's the only captain to ever do that as the captain of 2 teams. Add in the Guarantee, and the behind the scenes stuff (He pretty much held the team together with all of Mike Keenan's antics, especially with the goalie pulling and Leetch benching) and he's undoubtedly the best captain of all time. Not too many leaders like that dude. Remember, every cup Gretzky won was on a team that didn't need him to win them (proof was when Messier took Edmonton to the cup and won it in 1990) The same cannot be said for the teams Messier played for (1994 NYR don't even get near a cup without Messier, neither do the 1990 oilers.)

    • @ghytgb
      @ghytgb Před 9 lety

      Mess with Edmonton = Great Player / Mess after Edmonton = Great Golfer! As the great captain, that you have been force fed by the media, he missed the playoffs 8 times in 16 years! Got past the second round just three times! He needed 7 ex Oiler team mates and 6 Blackhawks to help him win the cup on 1994! He never led the Rangers to the cup! @@petermccormack2525 Think about it. What made Gretzky the best player in the first place? He didn't get over 2800 points on his individual efforts - he'd involved his teammates more than anyone else. Was he piggy-backing? If so, he deserves no recognition for being best player.
      Or, was he simply the best leader on the ice?
      And while we're at it, who was the face of the league? Who was more respected, even by his opponents? Who was bringing the best out of his teammates, and his opponents? Time and again, Gretzky outdoes Messier here.
      Sure, Messier won two cups without Gretzky. But keep in mind, he won the 1990 cup with all the guys returning from the Gretzky trade, one of whom later went to New York, played a large role in that win. And compare 1994 Rangers and 1993 Kings outside of Mess or Gretz. No contest, Rangers had the better team, Mess had more to work with.
      One more thing, Gretzky did have a hand in Messier's growth as a leader.
