London History Walking Tour - Royal Greenwich

  • One of my favourite day trips in London is to Royal Greenwich - where east meets west and Old historical Royalty meets new modern art and innovation. Greenwich has been at the centre of the world for hundreds of years and you won't want to miss all these lovely places to see.
First there’s the peninsula where you can see modern art by Anthony Gormley, Alex Chinnek and more, stretching all along The Line as far as the Olympic park.
Take a trip up the River Thames to the place where Admiral Lord Nelson’s body was taken after the Battle of Trafalgar, Les Miserables was filmed and the first observatory in England was built by Sir Christopher Wren.
Climb the O2 centre for spectacular views of London or see a global sporting event or music concert inside the dome.
Take an Emirates cable car for wonderful views of the river or visit the Now Gallery for new and innovative art installations. You can even hit a few balls on the driving range or walk by the tree where Queen Elizabeth the first played as a child and King Henry VIII got married.

Very good video. I was in London for the day with my in-laws , bad idea. Do to their habit of always being LATE , was not able to go into the Observatory as it closed for the day. What a personal disaster. To be so close and not see inside the only place on earth I really wanted to see. Got to see a bronze statue that had nothing to do with time and navigation !
Moral : If you go , get there early and just dump your in-laws , an apology will fix things.
Life is for living not crying over spilled milk !
Good luck with the contributions .

There was a Greenwich in western Massachusetts. Commonwealth of Massachusetts took the entire town and two other towns by eminent domain and flooded it to make the Quabbin Reservoir that provides all the drinking water to the greater Boston area. Some of those towns structures still exist at the bottom of the reservoir.

On a hot day in July (record temperature last I was there), after the climb to the observatory to see the view, a visit to the planetarium is bliss. Cool atmospheric temperature and total darkness, comfortable, reclined seats, an amusing astronomer explaining interesting stuff, and you wish you could stay there forever.

A slight correction. Greenwich's royal links actually started in Eltham, with Eltham Palace. In 1305 Anthony Bek, Bishop of Durham , gave the future King Edward II the manor and the estate where the palace now stands. Many kings subsequently used it as a royal residence. Henry VIII spent much of his boyhood there, although he eventually had Greenwich palace built (aka the Palace of Picentia), where Queen Elizabeth was born.

Hi Joolz. I discovered your terribly amusing video channel a few days ago and have since expended many precious hours following your jaunts around London. I love London and spent much of my formative life there and have lived in various parts of the capital city including Fitzrovia (Charlotte St), Walthamstow, Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, and Chingford. Loved the one you did on Rotherhithe BUT, you stopped at the Mayflower! Not even halfway around Londons longest street. This area is so rich in history I am formerly requesting you do a part 2 going all the way round to Greenland Docks and Surrey Quays. Pip pip tally ho.

Absolutely love your work sir, I do shows in covent garden, I saw your videos because Terry St Clair ( the singer ) posts them on facebook, now I've subscribed to your channel to get it first hand. Fantastic Job you doing here. Good luck going forward and please keep up this beautiful work. God Bless. Sergio

Thanks! Sergio, are you the magician? If so, you're bloody funny and really have got your patter down to a fine art. In fact, if you are who I think you are you actually heckled me the other day as I was walking past when trying to make that Covent Garden film. You shouted some funny remark much to the audience's delight! I worked in Covent Garden for many years when Hamleys used to be there which is how I know all the guys.

I'm getting addicted to your videos.
I have been learning new words and new expressions.
I already liked London and now I like it even more.
Congratulations to you and your team.
    PS.
    1) I still don't understand the meaning of the pip pip... at the beginning of the videos.
    2) Ever thought of making a video about Bletchley Park? Or you only consider London?

When you said no- one wants to know about that, I do! Lots of info on things here I didn't know about. I was in Greenwich Park in August with wife and kids.I only live 3 miles from it.

I love to see boats plying their trade and going about their business on rivers. Because I'm an historian, I realise the importance of water travel in the past. The first time I went to Greenwich, I travelled by boat. What other way to go there? Great video Joolz.
