I'm an RN and learned in nursing school that WARM water is best for handwashing. If the water is too hot it can break down the skin's barrier and cause problems. For hot water to kill germs on a surface it has to be boiling hot for several minutes, which is clearly not conducive for human hands. Also, the soap does not need to be antibacterial or antimicrobial for general handwashing. In fact, antibacterial soap is no more effective than plain soap outside a healthcare setting. It's the actual friction created during handwashing that kills the germs. You must do it for a minimum of 20 seconds to be effective.
