    This station helped get me through my tour in Vietnam "70-71......my friends would make me "cassette" tapes of the daily shows and send them to me. One day we were at LZ Baldy waiting for weather to clear so we could resupply the Marines in the field. I was laying in my -46 listening to one of the cassettes (our pilot had a cassette player he'd patch into our intercom so we could "rock out" while flying) and another Marine walked up and said hey that's WRBC radio, who's from Jackson, MS????? I yelled back and he walked on board. Turned out he was from Florence, MS. We talked awhile and found out we both had about 35 days each left in country. As we got ready to fly out, I gave him 4 or 5 tapes I had in in my helmet bag......he thanked me, shook hands and walked away. Never seen him again...

    I love this! Great music, great DJs, great memories. I listened to WRBC every spare minute I had, and waited for my favorite songs so I could record them on cassette tape. I remember Harry very well. The station was practically around the corner from my house. My best friend and I snuck out the window about midnight to go see a DJ (not Harry) there. My mother figured out where we were, and went to get us. We were insane to do that. I'd never seen my mom that mad.

      Mary, Did you go to Callaway high school? I was the radio engineer that worked on 'stuff' there and kept it going.

    Heaven might be listening to top-40 AM radio in the late 60s/early 70s, in the summer, in a convertible.

      So true. I was born in 1955, and I love late 60s and the 70s. I spent 4 yrs in the United States Marine Corps 1973 to 1977. Boy did I listen to a lot of music
      especially Aug74 to Sep75 when I was stationed on Okinawa. Stay safe and Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant from Charleston, West Virginia

    Awesome Ellis! Helluva post-funeral reception yesterday in OOB with his old partner in crime Broadway Bill Lee and others regaling us with hilarious Harry anecdotes, and now this. Made my day!

    Great clip...this really captures the feel of am hit radio at the time. This could be just about any top 40 station in the early 70s. The jock sounds like soooo many in my memory. 👍

    A young Harry Nelson. I wasn’t sure, but I thought he was talking about Rick Shannon. anyway, good sounding southern station.

    • @williamfulgham2010
      @williamfulgham2010 Před 5 měsíci

      Rick Shannon was the air personality name for Grady Brock. He used Rick and at times went back to Grady. He passed several years ago.

    Wassup with two different frequencies? 620 & 1300. Cookin’ station for a small southern market!

    • @johnsmith6586
      @johnsmith6586 Před 3 lety

      WRBC used to be on 620 and WJDX was on 1300. At some point in the 1950's they switched frequencies. It paid off because WJDX became a top rated station on 620 while WRBC eventually changed the format in the mid 70's and changing the call letters. WJDX 620 still exist as a news talk sports station while 1300 AM (WOAD) is at lower power these days 3100 watts down from 5,000 watts with black Gospel music.

    • @williamfulgham2010
      @williamfulgham2010 Před 5 měsíci

      @@johnsmith6586 It's at the lower power daytime because the active antenna is taller than it was when it was over on State street. The theoretical groundwave should be the same, however the diplexer was messed up when 930 was added, and was bought out later and does not cover what it did when we had it on the original JDX site, which is now a historical location.

  • @robgrayson9281
    @robgrayson9281 Před rokem

    Super Shannon was Doctor Grady Brock who was, at that time, soon to be on WCFL. All night DJ at WRBC around that time was Bob Pittman.

    • @radioconsulting
      @radioconsulting Před 3 lety +1

      @@radioconsulting The WRBC Harry went on to WRKO, and was there for many years until RKO General co. that owned those radio stations, had to give them up.
