  • A trip back to the days when 'style wars' were just that - violent confrontations about the clothes you wore. Spring 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the bank holiday 'battles of the beaches', when hundreds of mods and rockers flocked to seaside resorts on scooters and motorbikes in search of thrills and spills.
Timeshift tells the story of how this led to violence, arrests and widespread concern about the state of British youth. But mods and rockers had more in common than was first obvious - they were the first generation of baby boomers to reach their teenage years at a time when greater prosperity and wider freedoms were transforming what it meant to be young.

Very sad we don't see anymore great youth movements like the Mods , Teddy Boys , the Beatniks , the Hippies , the Punks ... and many others .. Subcultures always enrich a society in so many different ways , and that what's missing today .... Greetings from France

As an aging balding rocker I just love these films and looking back at the good old days. Even now if I see a scooter group of mods I always give them the big thumbs up... After all they made us and we made them... A wonderful decade to grow up in and kids nowadays don't know how to enjoy themselves by havin a bloody good fuck off riot ha ha ha

Not sure if my last message gets read. I was a biker at the end of the 60's. Hey guys remember the HPMCC in Guildford. I'm now a very old and well behaved 60 something. I now live in Cornwall but would really love to hear from anyone from those crazy days. You only live once, but you can remember your youth thousands of times

I was a mod in the early 80s and the guy that lived buy me had been an original rocker in the 60s used to tell me some great stories and had some great original photos used to spend hours chatting

I was too young for this but even at a young age, I instinctively sympathised with the Rockers although I had nothing against the Mods. I've always liked the old British bikes and I still do. Scooters did nothing for me. Of course the violence was always blown up by the papers. As in other publications, good insight from Dr Suzanne McDonald-Walker. Good film.

that's so amazing. how they would love something so much. they would look exactly like that. i would think they would just go and buy a coat for the winter and a tank top for the summer. but they had this whole presentation. i've never ever seen that ever.

"It gives you no idea! You'd think National Service was long ago Then?? Those kids who went in the service were out again two years later, and the kids of the early sixties had missed Rock and Roll of 1957"

As someone born just after this ( late 60s, teenager in the 80s) , I can see the appeal of riding a scooter to try and keep a bit cleaner, but that's about it. Most of the time I'd rather ride a motorbike. Not sure if that would make me a mod or a rocker !

My Father was the guy who punched the living daylights out on you Mods and Rockers down in Brighton... yeah, he was a cop and took no prisoners.... that's where his National Service served him well... taught him well how to kick the arse of any Mod or Rocker.
He used to look forward to catching himself a few Mods or Rockers on the weekend overtime shift...
He didn't hate you... he just liked the excuse to bust a few heads...

I know which one I'd rather have next to me in the front line in a war....it wouldn't be a mod...rockets were true Patriots...
riding British motorbikes, wearing British clothes (look at the rocker look..just like the fighter pilots in ww2) and
,listening to British music....I'm surprised that the public where so anti rockers..
its ironic that the biggest motorbike club
in England was run by the Anglican church the 59 club...the mods where renowned for drug use and went on to become skin heads....rockers where and always will be ROCKERS!!!.😎

These are pensioners now. This makes me wonder why pensioners think they should be respected. The older ones who were the great generation deserve respect. But the baby boomers, Sorry but they deserve to reap what they sow. .
