I haven't been this sad about a musician's passing since John Lennon. Impressive how Stevie kept relentlessly pursuing Tom to perform with her and even join the Heartbreakers. They harmonize so beautifully on this wrenchingly sad song. At the end I think she whispers, "I love you, Tom" in his ear. So many of us always will.
I recall a story. Stevie came to Tom, asking him to write a song. He refused, explaining she was as good a writer as a performer. She wrote, many songs after this. Tom was never selfish with his celebrity. He encouraged and shared the stage with so many. Fly High, my Friend...
@@judybrooks6334 She had asked Tom to write a song for her, he wrote this but in the end he decided to keep it, yet you are totally correct. He was never selfish. He was in it for the love of music. Stevie Blum This touched my heat as well, I’ve been left to rust, left in the dust. I’m much older now. I’m truly the insider. These two wonderful ppl know my life.
I think every relationship goes through this. You're feeling unappreciated. But further from the truth. We all feel unattached from our mate from time to time but when you show some patience, it all comes back around. That not yo say you can ignore your lover during those periods, just be attentive to their wants and needs
Tom Petty is such a genuine guy. Pure talent with a sweet heart. Stevie wanted to be a part of the heartbreakers but Tom always said "yeah...but theres no girls in the band" lol. but he sure did many songs with her to fullfill her needs. He is my favorite guy/musician of all time. There was nor will there ever be another Tom Petty.
of the 300+ live concerts I've seen, Tom Petty & HBs was the closest to the studio sound ever to me.. makes me think they perfected the songs live then recorded them live in the studio, something that U2 usually does.. great song, my favorite of his..
Two things that still continue to blow me away about this version: 1) How dialed in TP’s guitar tone is (even though he’s got the best PA and sound techs in the world), and 2) How Stevie’s vocals so perfectly follow and softly lilt behind TPs lyrics. Frickin’ amazing
Dear Tom, So you've finally gone. Just like you to keep up your death-defying act, right to the last minute. You did not go gentle into that not-so-good night. And no resting in peace for you. No, you're still walkin', rockin', burnin', flyin', travelin', shooting love and hearts full of holes. We shall play your songs in the fields, in the woods, on the freeways and the bi-ways, the beaches and the highways. We will play you in the cars, the trucks, the big rigs, the trains, planes and boats. We will play those well-worn songs in the buildings, in the offices, in the schools and the parking lots. We will NEVER stop listening and paying attention to the feelings. As long as we have hearts that feel, souls that yearn, heads that dream, bodies that move, we will carry you on. Now, go, and don't break down. You had a brave dream and you never blinked or backed down. Keep it rockin', Mr Petty. We all love you and we will always be here...

Born on this day (October 20th) in 1950. Tom Petty. The anguish expressed in this song (as well as in so many of your other ballads and rock anthems) is a pain we all know, all too well. But only one person could have written (and sung) about it so eloquently. And that person is you. ... Stevie Nicks must be hurting today. Good times. Miss Tom so much; he and Stevie were awesome together. I know she misses him, too.
Both had such different sound than so many others ,, both where legends b4 Tom left us ,but ,, I'll miss him 4 ever ,,til I meet him in the heavens myself ,, may sound kinda stupid but I got no doubt ,,there a Rock n Roll Roundtable up there where we can all b free and unafraid to get to know each other ,, all that gets me thru fears

Absolutely. My favorite sound honestly. I wish they made more songs together.

"Insider"
You've got a dangerous background
And everything you've dreamed of
Yeah you're the Dark Angel
It don't show when you break up
and I'm the one who oughta know
Im the one left in the dust
Yeah I'm the broken hearted fool
Who was never quite enough
I'm an insider, I been burned by the fire
And I've had to live with some hard promises
I've crawled through the briars -- I'm an insider
It's a circle of deception
It's a hall of strangers
It's a cage without a key
You can feel the danger
And I'm the one who oughta know
I'm the one you couldn't trust
I'm the lonely silent one
I'm the one left in the dust
I'm an insider, I been burned by the fire
And I've had to live with some hard promises
I've crawled through the briars -- I'm an insider
I'll bet you're his masterpiece
I'll bet you're his self-control
Yeah you'll become his legacy
His quiet world of white and gold
And I'm the one who oughta know
I'm the one you left to rust
Not one of your twisted friends
I'm the one you couldn't love
I'm an insider, I been burned by the fire
And I've had to live with some hard promises

This is so unbelievably gorgeous. I just came across it randomly via autoplay. I wish so much I had been in the crowd that night to hear this live. I miss Tom Petty and all the greats we have lost of late. The aching beauty of this song touches a deep place in me.
Absolutely beautiful song 🎧 awesome . I Love ❤️ Stevie Nicks and my Tom Petty!! Love them forever!!!!
This is one of my favorite Tom Petty songs ever. And in the wake of our collective loss of this American musical treasure, it rings especially poetic. Rest in peace sir. You job here on earth was well done. And thank you for the music, which will live forever.
You've got a dangerous background
And everything you've dreamed of
Yeah you're the Dark Angel
It don't show when you break up
And I'm the one who oughta know
I'm the one left in the dust
Yeah I'm the broken hear ted fool
Who was never quite enough
I'm an insider, I been burned by the fire
And I've had to live with some hard promises
I've crawled through the briars
I'm an insider
It's a circle of deception
It's a hall of stran gers
It's a cage without a key
You can feel the danger
And I'm the one who oughta know
I'm the one you couldn't trust
Yeah I'm the lonely silent one
I'm the one left in the dust
I'm an insider, I been burned by the fire
And I've had to live with some hard promises
I've crawled through the briars
I'm an insider
I'll bet you're his masterpiece
I'll bet you're his self-control
Yeah you'll become his legacy
His quiet world of white and gold
And I'm the one who ought to know
I'm the one you left to rust
Not one of your twisted friends
I'm the one you couldn't love
I'm an insider, I been burned by the fire
And I've had to live with some hard promises
I've crawled through the briars--I'm an insider
one of the most beautiful songs ever!!

Their voices were literally MADE FOR EACH OTHER!!!!
This song and " Southern Accents" absolutely kill me. Never can keep a dry eye.❤
Saw them play this in Gainesville in 1993 and 2006 - their souls broke your heart - we were all Insiders at that moment. Thank you pat6850!
This is beautiful. Mr. Petty, thanks for everything...
It’s nearly 2 years now and I still can’t believe he’s not with us anymore, such a sad time
what a time, time of real artists
Tom,our dear loved one, your soul has always been with us, like all of us your soul was created with the big bang ,and will be here for ever, what a beautiful soul, god must be very proud, and so are we, look forward to being with you forever.🥀 and ever.
Thank you very much Tom and Stevie for this. Timeless
Pure paradise conveying life's struggle
Well this FSU Seminole loves Tom; Petty fan since before the Heartbreakers; his first band The Epics and then Mudcrutch; playing gigs around small towns in Central Florida and partying with the band afterwards. Good times. Miss Tom so much; he and Stevie were awesome together. I know she misses him, too.
How can you not love Stevie?!?!
i just want someone to love me the way stevie nicks loved tom petty; rip tom
The song title is Hard Promises aka Insider. Great duet.
1981, so cool ✌️
Literally sound better together than alone! Never heard two people sound this good together!!!!!!!
Omg. Two of my all time favorite. The Greatest.
RIP Tom Petty...I will miss you so much...your music touches me daily
I saw this live in Phoenix - front row. Oh Tom you are so loved and terribly missed but we will rock on in your honor. Petty on
I LOVE this song! Just watch a Tom Petty 2006 concert special on PBS. Wish I could have been there. Sure do miss him.
Their voices sound as if they were meant to sing together, Stevie Nicks must feel as if she's lost a part of herself.
They were so good together. Stevie and Tom were very close friends. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers will live on forever.

There’s still a few of us around.
By the way, my maiden name is Ivy. We may be related down the line. ☀️
My family’s name was kept the same. When others came it was spelled as yours. 🤷♀️
Stevie & Tom, a vocalist match made in Heaven :)
Damn, Stevie's and Tom's voices melt together and soothe the soul. One of my favorite TP songs and albums
Beautiful energy is just cracking between these 2
Literally, no two people sound better together than these two ICONS!

I know this song, for me, this is one of the deepest, and the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. The lyrics are heartenching, it seems very clear that this song means alot to Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty, the first time I heard this song it was on a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live in concert on a cassette. Thank you for posting.

First time I've heard this song, stunning, so gentle in style but those lyrics are hard. RIP Tom Petty 😍😍
