Make a LED Light Box

  • Hey everyone, in this episode I show you how I made a light box that can be used for a bunch of creative stuff.
For the frame, I worked with cheap materials that I already had but you can consider to use solid wood so you automatically exclude some steps about the edging.
It was my first time making splined miters and I must say, I loved it! Actually I want to try something else with solid wood keeping the tongue splines visible.
Look how the process of making the frame can be simplified if you have a table saw and make yourself a 45 degree cross-cut sled. You can watch the video on making the sled in here:

Hi Dirty hands. That is a very nice light box! I built one very similar for my daughter (she is an artist).
I don’t think mine was as exact as yours but it turned out pretty good. I added a nice antique caring handle. Someone asked in the comments about all of your machines and the money involved and you answered perfectly. “Follow your passion, save for it and invest in it.” I have a family of 4 but I have always wanted to build things, so I looked for used tools wherever I could find them. It took me several years to find the starter tools which I used to build more tools benches and work tables to convert my hand tools to table tools. I really enjoy watching your videos and I learn from them. Thank you for that!

What you mean it travels? Maybe you can slide the sled forward with the saw powered with the blade up and tilted instead of raising it while running. Probably less scary. I love that you use a paint can holder to protect your fingers from getting wet, but never protect your fingers when working around sharp tools. I'm guilty of doing that too but I always think that I'm going to be a bloody mess and I think of being scared sh*t. This has helped me from not getting cut or losing a finger (like I've seen many people do). Mostly though I use better protection. Hey I'm 67 and I still have all my fingers and no cuts from over 50 years of wood working, and crafting. Thanks for sharing...

Please don't bring any violence to the comments section :)
Well, I was and still am poor and didn't get all the tools you see at once. I've been buying stuff over almost 6 years now and of course that when you really want something you need to make sacrifices and invest in that thing. You can't expect machines flying from a tree so you focus on what do you want to build and then search for ways to get it with what you have. Also you can do an easier design in this case and many steps here can be made with other tools, you just need to be creative and think for a bit ;) And the tools I own are not expensive anyway. They are not top quality ones or anything. Follow your passion, save for it and invest on it. I don't own a tv or a big apartment, for example and I choose to spend my money on these tools and materials because this is what moves me and makes me happy right now. And by being active in making, new opportunities arise and more possibilities come to life.
You cannot make omelettes without eggs. You cannot expect to build stuff out of wood without having at least a handsaw to cut it.

Hi! When using this method of sticking the lights in the border, the closer they get to the face board, the darker the center will be because the light don't have much space to spread around. On the other day I was thinking about another solution to make a light box that is really really shallow but I haven't tested it yet. I will probably make a video on that soon though ;) Of course you can always use tons of strips and stick them to the backer board so they are facing the white board...but you need to apply them very very close, otherwise you will end up with with a striped looking box. Give it a try! You can always unstick it and rearrange stuff. And you don't really need such a nicely done box. You can use thick cardboard or wood with butt joints and a few screws. It's up to you. Make it with what you have and how you want and allow it to be "yours" :)

You could do it with just a saw you know.
      Machines just make it easier.

Just a tip to keep in mind about those LEDs. The next time you wire the input connector to the strip, make your solder joints in the middle of them, not on one end. Especially it the strip is long. This evens out the load and will prevent voltage degradation near the furthermost end and will balance out the current much more efficiently.
