  • The Leveraged Freedom Chair (LFC) is a mobility aid designed for the 20 million people who need a wheelchair in the developing world. It has a unique lever-propelled drivetrain that enables it to travel up to 80% faster than a wheelchair on the road, and produce 53% higher peak wheel torque, enabling it to go off road like no other mobility aid available. Every moving part of the LFC is made from bicycle components, making the chair manufacturable and repairable anywhere in the world for as much or less than competing products. The LFC was created and developed by the MIT Mobility Lab and its partners. For more information about the project, check out: mlab.mit.edu/lfc

Is there any way to donate one of these to people who cannot afford it? I am in a wheelchair myself and would like to help.

Another Good Idea: a toilet seat that doesn't break so easily - hint, take off the little bumpers it has underneath. All the bumpers do is make the seat rock & move until it gets loose, cattywampus & breaks. At the end, the man clearly shows my point.

You know what that is for? If you didn't have those there and passed a lot of gas and had thighs that touched each other, the gas wouldn't have anywhere to go. But you're right: there is probably a lot more stable way to design for that function and it's way past time to do that. Maybe you can come up with it and get rich off of it!

I added a dislike, anybody who has used or is using a normal wheelchair can tell you in 1 second it is far easier than this.
Just look this is a strong young person working very hard to move at a gentle pace.
    Fail.

Dale Pearce, this is an old vid and old comment, but NPR just did a segment on this explaining differences between this and a conventional wheelchair
