In My First Visit To J&K After Article 370 Abrogation, What I Felt |

  • How has Kashmir changed after Article 370 that gave J&K special status was abrogated more than four years ago and the state downgraded into two union territories?
During his first visit to the Valley after the government’s landmark decision in 2019, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale came back enriched.
The security deployment isn’t as stifling as it used to be before, residents find it a lot easier to go about their daily lives, tourist footfalls have increased dramatically and businesses are buzzing.
Houseboats are full, the shikarawallahs are not complaining either. But there is certainly an underlying feeling of unease that separatist tendencies are lurking somewhere below the surface and that security forces cannot become complacent lest old tendencies make a comeback.

A brilliant, balanced, objective and incisive assessment by Nitin Gokhle about the prevailing situation in J&K ,post abrogation of Article 370. His fearless feedback about a small section of Kashmiris waiting to revive terrorism is truly praiseworthy. Keep it up, Nitin. Very proud of having journalists like you in our country. 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏

I was in j&k on the same dates
    1. Not a single Indian flag anywhere in J&K except in govt building
    2. Not a single hindu anywhere except around anant nag temple
    3. General kashmiri is highly anti indian just biding their time looking for an opening
    4. Till the time pakistan remains weak and poor the seperatist activity will be down
    5. All temples in srinagar under lock and fencing completely empty as no hindu is there to take care
    6. The game changer is the choke on the terror financing which has been brought by the govt .
7.stayed in a hotel next to the old hurriyat office building which has been closed down since last year
    Impression
Kashmiri old or young are absolutely aleniated from Indian Cause . They are quiet and following the law as their other sources of income have been stopped due to financial choke by the govt and lack of support from pakistan .
Young people have no recollection of a multi religious society as they have never seen or interacted with kashmiri hindus ever . For them hindus are only two indian army and cheap labour from hindi heartland . They have a strong believe that kashmir is for muslims and jammu is for hindus .

When 370 was abrogated, Col. Lawrence Sellin, PhD., Writer & a Veteran of Afghanistan & Iraq wars rightly observed: “Article 370 was most useful to Pakistan: It helped Pakistan spread poisonous militancy and misery in Kashmir. Pakistan used ‘special status’ of Kashmir to claim J&K was ‘disputed territory’. With one stroke, India has ended that claim. Pakistan now faces ruin itself. It has nothing to offer Kashmir."
Stephen Cohen had also warned that after Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, ISI has transferred Punjabi Mujahideen from Afghanistan to Kashmir, united 14 terrorist organization under United Jihad Council for Kashmir Jihad while infiltrating its army men into Pashtun groups to make Afghanistan.5th province of Pakistan.
Having secretly acquired nukes with Chinese help in mid-1980s, having defeated super power USSR through Jihadis, enlargement of territories was needed to flaunt nuclear status.
It was surprising that while foreigners were aware of true picture, India's Congress empire could not fathom the correct problem for over 70yrs & allowed this wonderful state to bleed for several decades..

@@manofsan Articles 370 should have been removed in 1965 itself when US State Dept had confirmed that Pakistan had launched illegal Operation Gibraltar on Kashmir in violation of UNSC Resolutions.
The UNSC Resolutions became null & void in 1965 as per International Law of “Clausula Rebus sic Stantibus “ which makes adherence to preconditions obligatory.& their violation Justifications for their revocation. “Clausula rebus sic stantibus “ is applicable even to the "all binding" International treaties & UNSC resolution were merely recommendatory, non-binding Chapter VI Resolutions.
“If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival.” - Winston Churchill.
Neville Chamberlain did not act in time & London was flattened by belligerent Hitler’s bombs & British Empire could not survive.
Congress incompetence brought India to precarious status. J&K and India faced hemorrhage for 70 yrs. Luckily Modi-Shah team ended it by ending 370.

@@adolft_official Pakistan has no locus standi not only in Gilgit Baltistan but on entire territory west of Indus River.
At the time of it's independence, Pakistan officially constituted provinces of E. Bengal, W. Punjab & Sind only. Areas West of Indus did not directly belong to British India & therefore to the successor state of Pakistan as they were subject to various treaty obligations.
Chief Commissioner’s Province of Baluchistan (CCPB) northern 1/3 of current Baluchistan was taken on annual lease of Rs.25,000 by Britain from Khan of Kalat (Balochistan) in 1883. Kalat was British protectorate like Nepal & had become independent on 11 August,1947.
Princely state Chitral was under suzerainty of J& K & is part of India as J&K had acceded to India after signing legally valid Instrument of Accession (IOA) like other princely states.
Frontier Province was part of Afghanistan occupied after private agreement by Britain with Afghan Amir to maintain Peshawar Cantonment after recognizing Durand Line as line of influence only. This agreement is invalid as international border as Durand Line separates independent state of Baluchistan without signature of Khan of Kalat.
Punjabi Army & bureaucracy, the new colonial powers of Pakistan enjoyed luxurious life by fooling people on Kashmir playing Anti-India/Anti-Hindu card to divert attention from illegal annexation of Pashtun & Baloch lands. Having lost E. Bengal due to its own faulty policies, Pakistan must now revert back to its original 1947 deemed status of Sindh & Punjab only.

What happened after abrogation of Art 370 is a question on many minds. Firsthand report on the current status is hard to come by. Your commentary is therefore appreciated as it is from a journalist on the spot.
Happy to learn that surface view presents a picture of tranquility and orderly life. Population is now engaged in business, students are in schools & tourism is back & future holds out hope. There should be no hurry to restart the political process as gains made so far can evaporate in a flash. We have seen this happen several times. Let the present administration consolidate gains before rushing into elections that could result into another conflagration. Enemies across the border are biding time for mischief and our experience with local politicians is anything but reassuring. We know where their loyalties lie.
As a taxpayer I want to know if mindless subsidies given to appease Kashmir’s have been rolled back? Whether locals are paying income tax and GST as rest of us do? Has the expenditure on security gone down significantly?
I visited Shrinagar several times from 1976 for company work, last one was in 2005, at the height of insurgency. We also had an all India Dealer conversation in Centaur Hotel & Convention Centre on Dal Lake in 1986 just before guns started blazing & the city became a fortified garrison town.
Having witnessed corrosion of high corruption as a way of life and resulting misrule in the state, religious bigotry and exponential growth in population, the dice is loaded against normality. However, despite all the odds if prosperity comes to the state, that will be a great achievement. We wish all the stakeholders the best of luck.

For those saying "hamara time ayega", they already had the opportunity for 75 years to win the hearts & minds of not just Kashmiris but also the rest of India. We were all waiting to see what kind of society "Kashmiriyat" would produce. Once the stone age goes, it does not return until mahapralaya wipes everything out.
The govt cannot be complacent - this radicalisation is part of a global phenomenon, so the solution will not just be local. A problem 75+ yrs in the making cannot be resolved in 3 years.
