  • In this colorful, award-winning PBS documentary, Mennonite historian John Ruth takes us sympathetically into the Amish mindset. An updated look at Amish origins, beliefs, farm life, childhood, school, worship, recreation, courtship, horse transportation, barn-raising, land pressures and cottage industry.
The Amish continue to intrigue their technology-current neighbors by keeping alive ways and beliefs that many modern Americans regard as irretrievably lost to progress. In this colorful, award-winning documentary, newly revised and augmented, Mennonite historian John L. Ruth takes us sympathetically into the Amish mindset. Appreciative neighbors, a well-known physician, an artist, and respected scholar John A. Hostetler, author of Amish Society, provide insightful commentary on the survival of an alternative to the kind of world we have made. As the Amish increase exponentially in numbers, some migrate toward more open farmland. Those staying in centuries-old communities where the land is too crowded to farm have developed an amazing variety of cottage industries. But all changes are made very carefully, in order not to undermine the spiritual covenant and community.
    Director: Burton Buller, Jay Ruth
Starring: John L. Ruth, John A. Hostettler, Harley Wagler

They are self sufficient, but they do not properly follow the laws of the true God. Yes, they separate themselves physically, but it take more than that. The scripture says, "Faith without works are dead." That is something I have to work more on.

Actually they’re becoming more and more dependent on English tourists to make money because land is too expensive now and they’re population doubles every 20 years. There’s a good documentary on Amazon about how they’re adapting to survive. Only 10% are farmers now. Sadly.

As a foreign resident doctor in Pennsylvania having arrived in USA for just four months, I came face to face with this unique people. Their simple way of life, rooted to nature and God shunning greed and personal agrandiosment, placing great value on family and community. The striking thing this beautiful documentary tells us that how Amish has accepted few modern additions to their lives bit by bits over the years, always keeping them at manageable levels and never allowing machines and progress to run away with peace and contentment of a well rooted community who knows how to live of the land simply and without any competition with fellow humans. There are lessons to be learnt here for all of us, with rampant social media use and advanced communication sure brings a lot of ease and convineance but collectively are we happier??. Technology and progress should always be there to help humans and not the other way round. At present this pace of progress has made the humans of this generation utter zombies who live to satisfy the demand of this faced paced existence rather than enrichment of their souls.

I pray not that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. Paul went all over the place, go into all the world and preach the gospel, ect. For all of their virtues, mortality, humility, they disobey Christ's cheif command when he left to preach the gospel to all nations, and will give an account as to why they neglected Jesus's words, in this regard, it is indeed a great sin they continually commit with this lifestyle of other worldliness.
