      Thank you so much for the kind feedback Rich. I'm so glad you found it useful. Ah yes, Norway is wonderful in winter and summer, it just depends on what activities you want to do. Weather is tricky up there. Moving around is definitely a way of finding any accidental pockets of clear sky. Or you can live there and the accidental pockets find you sometimes. The northern lights do wary and awful lot, though. I lived in the mountains inland from Lofoten for a year, so that was my vacation in the north, and there was a lot of northern lights when it wasn't busy snowing. Sometimes they were barely visible streaks of grey/green, sometimes the sky was absolutely full of swirling snakes of light. At its brightest it almost turns yellow.

    One more amazing video. I have watched your video about Oslo and i have taken some excellent ideas. I also have plans to visit Lofoten Islands and your video is just amazing. I intend on visiting them in winter to combine my trip with the northern lights. I believe it is worth visiting in winter somewhere between January and February. I have some questions though.
    1) Would it be ok to land in Tromso or somewhere else?
    2) I know it may be expensive for accommodation, is there anything like cottage except hotels?
    3) Do you believe that one week is enough for Lofoten?
    4) Which are the main cities for food and shopping?
    5) Which months are snowy months?
    6) I want to rent a car, is it easy to drive all over the islands, do i have to take any ferries or are they connected with roads?
    Basically, how can i spend 7 days in wintertime in Lofoten Islands with my top priority the northern lights?
    Thank you very much and keep up with the great work!!!

    • @theintrepidguide
      @theintrepidguide  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you so much for your kind words :) If your priority is to see the Northern Lights then I highly recommend watching my Tromsø video here czcams.com/video/LqqJi_UqGZY/video.html It's one of the best places to see them on a tour due to it's location and the ability for local tour operators to drive away from bad weather which is very difficult to escape from in Lofoten.
      Here are my tips for questions
      1) Would it be ok to land in Tromso or somewhere else?
      Yes, absolutely. From there you can either catch a connecting flight to Lofoten or drive down (6.5 hrs)
      2) I know it may be expensive for accommodation, is there anything like cottage except hotels?
      Yes, you can stay in 'rorbuer', traditional Norwegian fishing huts which have been converted into gorgeous accommodation. They are the most authentic way to experience Lofoten :) I stayed here bit.ly/EliassenRorbuer and here bit.ly/HattvikaLodge
      3) Do you believe that one week is enough for Lofoten?
      Yes, that's a good amount of time, although you won't see everything and you will want to come back for more again in the future, and probably in summer so you can go hiking!
      4) Which are the main cities for food and shopping?
      The main and largest city is Svolvær but other town have supermarkets or small shops.
      5) Which months are snowy months?
      From late October to March
      6) I want to rent a car, is it easy to drive all over the islands, do i have to take any ferries or are they connected with roads?
      Yes, it's very easy to drive around as there is one main highway and no ferries are needed.

I love calm and cold places and Lofoten is the most beautiful I've seen, but idk if it's a comfy place to live in year-long. I don't know your preferences but livingcosts in Norway are very expensive. If you want stunning nature, wildlife, tranquility, mountains and similar winters you could also find paces like this in Sweden (Not Lofoten copy). The high alpine area of Sweden is in the far north. Here the livingcosts are lower compared to Norway. The scandinavian experience is imiar to what you would find in Norway. ( I am a Dane visiting both Norway and Sweden ) Having said that getting there in both the northerne parts of Norway and Sweden is often expensive too. For me in copenhagen it is the same distance as flying to Rome in Italy but there are fewer companies competing in the air, busses and train, so expect higher prices than when flying to 'Rome'. But yes the north up there is stunning - both Norway and Sweden.

    Hi. Beautiful video. I watched it and then subscribed. I want to visit the Lofoten Islands. In my research I learned that Macs Adventures only caters to 2 or more people for their tours. When I asked why they indicated it was for safety. I am 68 years old and in decent shape. I plan to travel alone. I assume that most of the risk would be from taking trails by myself. I realize that I can just skip a hike if it is too remote or dangerous. Any thoughts on this subject?

    • @theintrepidguide
      @theintrepidguide  Před 2 lety

      Thanks David :) Hiking in Norway is serious business so depending on the hike and difficulty, it's important you ask locals and refer to the official Norway tourism site about these details and when you arrive always check with local for the conditions. There is the so-called "mountain code" in Norway that even locals need to follow. One of them is to never hike alone, even if you're experienced. It's not just about your fitness level, but all weather and terrain. Conditions can change very quickly in Norway making it unsafe. I would always recommend going in a group :)

      Ankle support and be very careful near any cliffs if it's windy. Don't break anything or get blown out to sea and you'll be fine. Lofoten isn't the Himalayas. You can usually get at least somewhere if you need help, and the roads are good.

    Hello!! I'm Elena and I write you from Spain (sorry if I make a mistake but I'm trying to improve my English). I am thinking about visiting Lofoten next summer. The landscapes, the Midnight Sun... wow!!! My boyfriend is allergic to fish and I'm a bit worried about it because there are many fishing villages in this zone. Having lunch or dinner will be a problem for him or there are alternatives like pizza, pasta...? What do you think?

    • @theintrepidguide
      @theintrepidguide  Před 4 lety

      Hi Elena! Your English is perfect! Well done you :) I'm vegetarian so I know it can be tricky to find non-fish dishes, especially in remote places as Lofoten. Does your boyfriend eat meat? To be honest, you won't really eat out all that often as it both expensive and there aren't all that many places to eat at and the selection is limited. I stayed in small villages in accommodation with a kitchen like bit.ly/HattvikaLodge and bit.ly/EliassenRorbuer. It's much cheaper to go shopping at the supermarket and prepare your own meals and take snacks and a packed lunch (which I recommend doing anyway) with you when you go out during the day. This is how I did it anyway. Hope this helps ;)
