DEBATE TOPIC: This house would call Edward Snowden a Hero
ABOUT ANNIE MACHON: Annie Machon is a former MI5 intelligence officer who left the Service at the same time as David Shayler, her partner at the time, to help him blow the whistle about alleged criminality within the intelligence agencies. By doing this, they had to give up their careers, go on the run across Europe (August 1997), live in hiding for a year, and then spend the next two years in exile in Paris. They, and many of their friends, family, supporters and journalists, claim to have been intimidated, and some of them were arrested and put on trial. A death threat was announced against her on a Middle Eastern radio station.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

Topic: "The Tipping of the Scales".
Balance... (knowing right from wrong and doing what's right)...
is foundational in law and executive decision making.
"To ask" directly or through a third party "for money" concerning
"papers considered classified" is blatantly "tipping the scales".
All for Moral Integrity & truth,
    All for Balance.

Excellent points generally, opening points are exceptional and very tactful in the "calling out" of Charles Vaughan.

      Tactful? or just truthful? :)

well there is a certain point at which the truth can be conveyed in a non tactful way! I am glad she didn't go down the crewed route, that would have made her arguments a little bit less respectable.

Hope Annie Machon is doing well now. No recent speeches on CZcams. She is spot-on with the truth, I could use her intellect and candid way of speaking in my situation of being defrauded by a criminal network that stole my life savings.

machon does not make a logical case. snowden is half pregnant in his claim to release him from his oath. he is not absolutely against surveillance, just against certain areas of surveillance. my respect for him is limited, because he is motivated not by his duty of defense as a citizen, but because it over-stepped his personal taste. nonetheless, some people might decide he has done society a good deed, however flawed.
making claim that he has defended democracy fails, however, because the usa is not a democracy. the people are not sovereign. he was working for the government, and betrayed them. he will go to jail, if caught.
a claim by a brit to respect his defense of democracy is simply laughable. uk remains a nominal monarchy, a real elective oligarchy , better a real elective aristocracy due to its heritage. in reality, the government of the usa is less progressive in some respects, as the constitution froze the nation in a constitution modeled on the britain of george 3rd.
whistleblowers are seldom without flaws, being human, and out of step with the world around them. until they live within a democracy, not in view, they must be masochists who will be punished by their elite masters, and can not be protected by the people they purport to serve. worse, those people commonly turn on the whisleblower for exposing the quality of the ruler to be a shame to all who submit.

What is Democracy ? And what is Freedom ? I mean that debate will go on ad infinitum, and that's exactly what's happening here, just part of that necessary flow to get closer to that truth. And what is Truth ? Oh God (!) the thing will never end. For me Snowden did a huge service to awakening the world population that Nazism is still alive and thriving, even though many already clearly understood it, he brought it to a world stage and continues to. Priceless really. We're all flawed, and indoctrinated as kids growing up and instilled by a sense of nationalism that can be used to turn us in police, lawyers, politicians, militias in the name of something. But it's the moment you awake from this non-sense and change your ways that really count. And I have to agree with the speaker that Snowden, sacrificed himself for the greater good, even if that isn't the full picture or even ill informed, it's a progression ...
