  • A quick how to on changing the thermostat on the RV water heater. Most RV water heaters are set at 140 degrees … a tad too hot.

Make sure all the roads you travel on are smooth... one bump and the thing looks like it will pop out. 20 years of RVing and I've never been burned, or had a problem with a water heater. Mix a little cold water with it as you run your faucet and you're in good shape. Turn the heater off at night and you don't have to worry about a high electric bill, or using up propane. DUHHHHH!

BINGO!!! I lowered my heat by giving the bypass Tee-valve a 1/8th turn. So now the hot water is still scorching hot in the water heater, but as it comes out it mixes with cold supply line!!! Hot-dam!!!

Being handicapped by having partial thumb and non working index finger on my left hand, I had to find a way that would make installation easy.Get a small hose clamp that fits over the black portion of the thermostat, then inside on a table, place the spring over the black portion of thermostat . Holding the spring in place have someone else insert the furnished metal retaining piece, over the black portion. Next place the hose clamp against the metal piece and gently tighten hose clamp Now everything is secure in place. Return to water heater and place the thermostat against HW tank, then with a small screw driver push the metal piece tabs into place. Now the Thermostat is in place. Remove hose clamp, connect two wires, and MAGIC your done. No trying to get spring in place in a tight spot. R Beck

I love the 140F but I installed a recirculating line to my shower on 1 minute timer I use just before showering to save water and I also installed Thermostatic Mixing Valve Faucet which adjusts the temperature of the shower at the shower so no matter if the speed of flow changes it always adjusts the temp. All I do is control the water flow rate and the temp always automatically stays the same, even when someone else uses water while I shower. These faucets are popular in Europe and Japan and can be found on Amazon. I can slow the water to less than 1/2 gal per min and the water temp is the same automatically. I can get a 20 minute shower out of 10 gal water heater, spray hard to rinse and the rest of time slow spray staying all relaxed.
This is also great boon docking since the water comes out of shower with in 10 seconds at perfect temp thus saving a lot of water waiting for water to heat up. Instantly spray, soap, rinse on a gallon of hot water. Wife's long hair takes a little longer.

The PURPOSE of setting the thermostat high is to make sure you don't run out of hot water. You will use more cold water to bring the temp down to a more comfortable temperature and thereby MAKE YOUR COMFORTABLE WATER TEMPERATURE LAST LONGER.

Thank you. I have wondered if this option was available for a while, should be standard equipment. My hot water seems to be at least 140 degrees in my toy hauler trailer, definitely hot enough to accidentally give grandkids a serious burn. We do mostly dry camping so water as well as propane are premium resources. Hopefully this will save water by not having to run as much water to get the temperature adjusted as we start and stop water while showering. I do have a push button demand shower head but still seem to have to fiddle with hot and cold adjustment because of the extreme temperature range. 140 degrees is extremely hot, a serious safety concern and a potentially waste of limited resources. Thanks again for helping make me aware this option is available.

RCJorgy55 can’t believe some of the other commenters don’t see the safety concerns.

Thanks for sharing video. This should be factory install. Changed my 140 out for the adjustable. Wow what a P.I.A. Really Dometic, you couldn't design the retaining clip better? Finally got it in after many tweeks of bending a fitting myself. Be prepared to swear a lot installing this thing.

A good reason is the electric bill savings. Who needs a constant 24/7 supply of 140d water?

"Too hot" just means more hot water to take longer showers, and more time to do dishes.

Well, more like, melts sink sealing putty over prolonged expose and leads to leaks.

If you mix 140 degree hot water with cold water to say 110 degrees, won't it last longer then mixing with 115 degree water? I don't understand the point of not wanting 140 degree water to start with. Just mix it with more cold and you won't get "burned every time you take a shower". I like hot water to last the whole shower so 140 is great for us.

Ditto! I want mine cranked to 160 or more to make that 6 gallons last longer than getting my hair wet! The cold water mixer is endless....

Just installed one. Is it normal for the adjustment dial not to have a consistent turn/feel as you go around? Going from A to B is a very nice consistent turn with clicks. Once you get to C the dial has no resistance and is sloppy, then as you get to D and E it stiffens up again but the clicks aren't quit as positive as they are at A and B.

It is 140 degrees by design so that a 10 gallon has the same rating as a 12 gallon tank.

It's sad that this isn't standard with a $500 water heater. But I'm glad it's an option. I would much rather heat to the temp I want and take a 5 gallon shower without mixing. Saves water and gas.

Does the thermostat need to be protected from the water released from the pressure release valve?

Gee I guess mixing cold water with the hot was just to much of a challenge for him.

Lol! Correct. I'm going..."dude, just mix with cold water". Because if you're a full time, you're definitely going to need it in certain cold climates.

Do you have to turn off the power (electricicty or propane) to the water heater or drain the tank before doing this?
