I took my Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG to the Dynapack dynamometer at Wired Electronics in Elizabeth, NJ to see how much power it was making. The results are a mixed bag.

How to get an AMG into Dyno Mode: Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start
Holy hell, that was complicated.
Lmao, Hoovies Garage
Sal Picataggio 😂😂😂😂
and it gives you unlimited lives playing Contra
lol
That door being so close to cement block is too cringe worthy.
This $8,900 is becoming the new "at age of 17"
bumper to bumper
West Senkovec "I had some very good beer"

start a lemonade stand, you'll be able to afford much more.
West Senkovec It helps people who are new to his videos dude
I keep forgetting how much you paid for this car, thank god you put it in every single title
A great writer once told me, you have to write for the audience you want, not the one you have. Not everyone has the context of watching every video before this one.
Marcel lol thought of the same
Tavarish a great writer also said, "unsubbed"
Marcel savage
you're unsubbing because of a video title? you won't be missed
Your car is making almost spot on power accounting for 15% driveline losses.
Tristen Sanders well since its only rwd 15% is alot of driveline losses,right?15% more likely 4wd
drivetrain loss is never linear 15% is rough rule of thumb for 2wd losses.
presteronetj then how much will it be for the 4wd vehicles?
presteronetj i just think its a little bit too much maybe 10 % is more likely
Andrej Kostovski that's a pretty standard figure it's more of a average the new gtr only has about 10%. Drivetrain loss but there some Subarus that have in the neighborhood of 30% + Drivetrain loss there's way too many variables so most people just use the 15% figure
First thing i would do with a neglected car is.. change the oil.. Even before trying to start it.. or is that weird?
trebor229 yeees it is.....first you must do acceleration test.....maan !!
trebor229 no
why would put the car on the dyno without a oil change and new spark plugs. You're not getting a true reading. The tuner/dyno guys should of told you that
vahag y they are not pro tuners, just got the cheapest dyno that you need to install your wheels on, (means you wont the get the right reading because wheels have rolling resistance into them and reduce the hp and torque, and Im sure you dont drive without rear wheels) to get the audio and other simple wired stuff type of customers to trust them and think "look they got a dyno so it means they are sooo good at smaller things like installing my $20 speakers"
I hear ya. Since these do bolt up to your hubs they will give you a higher reading. ALso they wont ever slip or bounce off rollers. They have mathematical equations that would fix it. To be a real world numbers.
sweet dreams f
Do you even know when the oil was last changed? if not.. a dyno-run would be considered the smartest xd
that was on my mind as well.
Judging by the neglect this can has suffered, I'd say the oil was last changed in 2009.
I'm sure this car is screwed somehow. I'd love to see the service records. I wouldn't be surprised if the carfax showed nothing on the service history. This car was neglected big time.
In Oz they go for around $A65,000 & up.
skip to 9:20. You're welcome.
dyno with no oil change?that's nice
I would do a compression test on that engine. $8,900 or not that rebuild may not be worth it. $8,900 right? That's what you paid? I can't remember.
BioHazard Shrimp Think it was close to $9000, but I'm not sure..
ic pump, my e55 gained 80whp when i changed it.
Big fan from Milan, Italy. Keep up the good work man your channel is great !
Thanks!
Lmao I love the guy trying to come up with reasons to do another run @ 9:02 “maybe do another one so we can uh, you know, get uh, actual..”
I believe it runs rich like that in the upper RPMs to reducing the chance of detonation being that it is force inducted. Having detention at higher RPMs can be catastrophic. I'm sure the stock tune is more on the safe side and you can get a tune to lean it out a bit to extract some power.
new wipers for My $8,900 SL55 AMG
Hi
I have the same problem with mine SL55
386hp and 760nm on dyno.
90hp is gonne somewhere lol.
Did you fixed the problem in yours sl55 ?
I just found your account, and I'm loving these videos. Awesome venture.
Great video! I'd like to see how you're going to get it up to standard spec!
Seems like the motor is pretty healthy! Good stuff. Well worth the money at that price! Just goes to show, a smart car guy is a happy car guy!
Can you do an engine bay clean video
Sure!
great! I've been wondering what's the proper procedure for cleaning an engine bay!
im from north NJ and i was wondering if you know where i might find headlights and some parts for 2005 BMW
great buy man and can't wait to see tune up and build. best of luck
I actually raced against one of these last saturday, sounded terrific.
Beat it but if we were going for top speed than he surely would have won.
My car; Supercharged Opel Speedster; 860kg - 308hp
I love those wheels imo. they look period correct
Yeah, i'm waiting for the roadtrip video
They starting up the fan "lets walk with a sub woofer enclosure next to it" :D
Probably mentioned before, but is the intercooler pump working, its a common failure and the car goes rich when IAT temps climb; you should see temps at 35-30 degrees over the outside temp
Check and possibly replace your spark plugs. And get some K&N air filters or Green Filters. Both made a nice difference on my C32 AMG. I would also clean the throttle body and reset the engine adaptations with a compatible scan tool
Thought you'd do a tune up before the long trip! I want to see how much power it does after it gets a nice tune up
I like those videos! Keep it up! :D
please do that dyno run again with the engine in perfect shape
From a German point of view you have pretty bad gas in the us... so try putting in 100+ octane gas and do a large service on it!
US and Europe calculate it in different ways which makes US fuel look
like it has a lower rating.
There is fresh oil in the engine before your run right?
*put some E3 plugs in it and some 8mm plug wires on it and try it again also a K&N air filter and you may well get your 400HP out of it at that point. you're close as it is but the E3 plugs will make a huge difference. also put in Mobil 1, Royal Purple, or Rotella Synthetic oil and clean out your engine before the oil change with Seafoam all of those things i just mentioned may even put you over the 400 HP mark and they are not super expensive upgrades and they will not only increase performance but also keep your car running better for longer. those things made a HUGE difference in the performance of my 99 tahoe and each thing was more noticable as i added each different item*
Love the " you guys need to wrench everyday " 🤘
I love your videos man. Awesome cars for awesome prices lol
The abuse continues if you did not change the oil, air filter ect.
I thought "oh man, your worse than me!" Yeah I would have at least done an oil and filter change, lol.
4:28 what is this thing at the left side ?
Did you already change the Plugs, and all the fluids? Could make a noticeable difference.
It's dumping fuel in because there isn't enough air moving into the engine with only one fan. That combined with worn out plugs causes the computer to try and adjust for the lack of air and maintenance.
That's still a crazy sharp car and with the blower/supercharger it's badass!!!!!!
Price and prestige aside. Which car do you think is better overall. The Mercedes or the Aston?
I'm really interested to see how you fix the car and gain your horsepower, I think my car is also a little low on horsepower. nice video!
Are the original HP numbers based off of the old net rating system? In 2005 everyone switched to the SAE standard (J2723 iirc). If the OG numbers were Net that would probably explain the discrepancy a bit.
are you guys making pulls in 1st gear? or in a 1:1 gear?
Tavarish I had a feeling you were at wired from the thumbnail. central jersey represent!!!
man... 5 videos about this Mercedes already, I demand 5 more videos
check your intercooler pump. a lot of us e55 guys upgrade to the Bosch 010 pump
Hey if you're looking for wheels, I have some AMG Monoblocks for sale in Philadelphia. They're from a W220 AMG package. They're staggered 18 inch wheels. 245 fronts and 275 rears.
Damn you parked perfectly parallel to that white parking spot line, that amazed me :-D
I suspect a tuneup would be in order as indicated in the video. I also believe ambient temps would be a factor. NJ is probably hot and humid now. Maybe ice the intake?
The 493/516 is BHP, which is the engine by itself without accessories. Even the water and oil systems are fed with external pumps so the engine can put out as much as possible. With the drivetrain you can take about 73hp off automatically (15% rule, but may be a high percent with automatic transmissions), and the accessories can vary in parasitic loss percentages. Yes, 365 is low, but its not too far off. New spark plugs, changed oil, air and fuel filters and that should bring it back to where it should be. Probably wont hurt to run a fuel system cleaner as well.
Check the intercooler water pump. Check boost level. Of course check air filter. Should make apx 400whp.
I probably would have fixed the oil leak first, but that's just me.
Check the intercooler pump - the original ones inevitably stop working and the supercharger clutch disengages as a safety measure.
Surely those hub dynos are bad for the drivetrain? By not having the torque of the edge of the wheel to assist it's a lot of stress right at the centre. Or am I just making things up?
What year isit
Not bad for the state the car is in. If you change the oils, filters etc. and give it some good runs, I think it will pick up some horsepower. It was used as a boulevard cruiser so the engine is probably caked, one hint for that is the gain in power when it got some beans on the dyno. Still an incredible car for the price, with so much potential. Keep us posted and nice vid.
Not going to get into driveline loss debate, but I do wonder what new Mobil 1 Synthetic, plugs, coils (assuming they're needed), and air filters would do? My standard M113 in my '02 S500 jumped ~3MPG city and hwy with its 100k mile "tuneup", which I did early due to age at ~90k mi last year. Seat-of-pants power improved too 👍 Not gonna dyno a 4000+ lb limousine 😂
I would imagine the power went up after the first couple of runs blew some crap out
The drop off in power and increase in fuel ratios says to me it is starving for air, probable due to the air cleaner being old and dirty. Yu could have quickly checked for this by taking it out for a dunk run. Better still, Change the oil, plugs, leads and air filter and run it again.
Is that power corrected to a more common Dyno measurement?
Is it deristricted?
Cripes that Dyno looks like it would be a pain in the ass to use.
This makes me want to take my Grand Am and get it on a dyno. Results like yours would mean a broken dyno, still, it might be fun to know how close to spec it's running.
Change the air filter, change the oil and the oil filter also
New transmission oil would also help.
How many miles on it?
How many miles on the car?
your guilty of good content. automatic thumbs up bro.
Tavarish. Re you increasing Dyno readings on the SL55 with subsequent tests, when I first drove an SL55 in 2002 when they launched in the UK, Mercedes told me that the car offered adaptive responses in that if you drove it gently, the throttle and brake feel reflected this but that when you started to drive it harder that they they firmed up to match your driving style. At the time when i started the test drive the car felt quite soft but as we went through a spirited test drive it certainly started to firm up. I have had an SL55 for about 8 years now but it feels the same all the time (maybe I drive it hard all the time), hoever, if there was some truth in what Mercedes said to me in 2002, could it be that as you push the car harder as in the Dyno test, that it remaps the ECU to reflect. Just a thought, anybody know.
Loving your posts on the Mercs, inspiring me to wrench almost every day
Simon
4:30 What is that in the bottom corner
Isn't those hp specs from the factory crank and the wheel is typically about 15-20% difference? I mean know there not an exact science but that is true it is doing pretty good, right?
before doing a dyno run, change the air filters, the gasoline filter, clean the injectors, replace the spark plugs, and that numbers will go up... and if u can change the oil in the kompressor to last longer...
And also he need to split the cooling
Change those air filters! Not sure how that particular ECU works, but a lot of times at WOT they are "open loop" so it's not using the O2 sensors. If there is some kind of airflow restriction, you'll get less air but the same fuel, and it will lose power and run rich.
Looking at the dyno, you can notice that peak torque happens before 2K rpm and from then on is flat for around 2K rpm more before going down dramatically. On thing I've noticed with MB cars is when you tap the accelerator, you get INSTANT torque and you just feel that 'push'. That can explain why MB cars tend to have LOWER REVVING engines without sacrificing acceleration. It seems they can do that because they can make the transmission ratios taller causing the engine to rev lower. That might explain why MB doesn't rely on an outside company to supply them the transmissions like BMW, Audi, Fiat, etc. They build their own. Because MB has lower revving engines, that can explain why Tavarish and other owners haven't complained about engine failure but (LOL) electronic failure that are irrelevant to the engine. And Tavarish seems happier with his SL55 AMG compared to his Aston. Also, it explains why MB is also in the commercial vehicle industry. In the US, it owns the trucking brand, Freightliner, and the engine manufacturer, Detroit Diesel. Lastly, since MB doesn't have to spend its capital on maintaining its engines like its competing manufacturing brands, such as BMW, Audi, VW, and Porsche, it has the extra capital in making their models feel more comfortable and technologically advanced. The reason I bring up those brands is because they priced around the same as MB, but they are very DIFFERENT.
i wanted a e55 amg so bad
Whats the mileage on it? Unless I missed it I haven't heard it mentioned in any of the vids.
113.000 miles
change to the bosch 010 pump and put a pulley, tune, and headers on it!
It the motor revs at all past 5252 rpms, your hp should exceed your torque. I wonder if the air filter is clogged, and it just can't breath? Would explain the richness too.
do I see you putting a tune on it in the future ??
i would take it to a chasis dyno just to see if there is any difference.
And then there's the question which one is right.
With the AFRs getting richer as the RPMS go up higher, i would first do a boost leak test, before looking at replacing anything. from the AFR numbers it looks like its not getting the air it expects according to the tune(O2 sensors, unless they are wideband, wont pick that up if its too far out of range) on the ECU
How much did the car cost?
Just had to say thats a dope AE86 in the background
maybe after major service, fresh plug, oil, air filter it will give a little more hp?
I love this Mercedes SL55 AMG what a great looking motor and for the price you paid you got a good deal and yes it has it's issues but WOW what a car you can do a lot with this to get the price up then sell it on and make some $$. Regards Alan B ( UK)
If i am reading the screen right, that was at 5600 rpm, why so low?
Love the 55 motor
My guess is it needs a service, a tune and I'm not convinced the engine is getting enough air also on that crappyish dyno setup. With a few more dollars it will be 95% the car it was new. I like these, agreed they're the prettiest SL. Even messed up it's nigh on a 400hp car. How much was it? :p
This car will forever need "a few more dollars".
Someone should define "a few more dollars" for this car. Hint: it's always "add another zero".
that 86 though.
damn it, after watching your videos of this AMG, I searched all of Craigslist for one. Found nothing under 15k! You sure got a smoking deal. I'm really excited to see what you will do with this. The costs kinda put me off. I've backed out of two deals in the last month. one was a 97 sl500 and one an 01 E55 AMG. both even trades for my Harley. maybe your experiences with this AMG will be my motivation.
Honestly, I think there's so much more wrong with this car than what he has shown. On top of that, he pretty much bought this from someone who could care less about cars it looks like. This thing was abused to the max, which is probably why it's dirt cheap.
Why didn't you change the oil first?
a clean new airfilter, new spark plugs and lightweight synthetic 5w-40 might increase horsepower
it sounds like it revs slow and has a really low redline
I couldn't take my eye off the door. It was sooo close too that wall.
380 to the wheels doesn't seem bad at all
He needs to replace his I/C pump, the stock one goes bad. Car should make 415-425 whp stock.
AMGmeister for some reason I processed 380 as 480... Totally forgot these were already at around 500hp. Makes sense
AMGmeister haha glad to see you here my dude! 😎👌 love your videos on the w211
AMGmeister speaking of W211s, I'll likely be getting an E63 soon. I'll have to check out your vids!
Thanks!
Yes another video 😎👏👏
ITS OVER 9000!!!!!!!!! 😬
*eagerly waits for new video*
