Every independent nation must be able to defend itself. Irish ppl agree on that, surely? Else, what was the point of Independence from Britain 100 years ago? Even Ireland, with its fortuitous geography, has to be able to defend its national territory. If not, why have an army, navy or air corps in the first place? If ppl.can agree, some defense is needed, which is national policy, then the question is how much defense? Enough that Ireland doesn't have to call the RAF when Russian bombers enter Irish airspace. Enough naval power to ensure the Russian war ships off Donegal, Cork and Galway don't sabotage the sub sea cables. Every other neutral country is armed to the teeth and able to defend themselves, e.g Sweden, Switzerland, Austria. Ireland is a complete oddity in the developed world in defense matters. I am saying, to be a fully sovereign, independent nation, the ability to defend yourself is part of the package. Sanctimonious self congratulations on UN peace keeping efforts is masking the reality that the country is effectively defenseless. As one of the speakers correctly said, freeloading. Shameful.

Be neutral if you want but put your money where your mouth is and pay for it. You can't rely on the US, Britain or NATO to help us. If we're so mature then act it and stand on your own two feet. We have to pay for our neutrality 2 or 3 % of our 504 billion would be about 10 billion. if you're going to spend so much why not join NATO, your money goes a lot further. Neutrality isn't a free ride. I think neutrality made sense when the country was developing but not now as a mature state we need to take our place among the nations of the world.

knowing that PEACE is not an easy word of definition: Yes? The bible tells us " Blessed are the peacemakers ... ,
and " To every thing there is a season ... a time for war ... a time for peace ..." and all the rest. I would like to express

Has Ireland no self respect? Switzerland , Sweden and Finland have all been neutral for decades but they have always had a real defence capability. Their guns have always pointed east. Ireland is positively gushing about the EU project. Totally aligned. But Ireland has never had any meaningful defence capability. No need? NATO will come to our aid. Austria is neutral as a result of agreement for the withdrawal of Soviet troops in the nineteen fifties. That is different. But even that has now run its course. That guy ,in the video supporting neutrality like it is a religious cult , basically is saying invasion of a non threatening state by an authoritarian predator is none of Ireland’s business……militarily. He is saying in effect, “We support you but we are not going to help.”
    This is truly pathetic.

But like me and the majority of the Irish people believe we have no reason to get involved in the affairs of mainland Europe. Ireland has been the historically punching bag for Britain with constant invasions and genocides and now that we have true freedom for the first time in hundreds of years we should focus on our country and no other. And why I do think we should invest more in our navel sector of the military it should be only to protect Irish waters

There have been issues with the Hungarian population and obviously they have been anti-Russian from the start. Btw this was all in one of worlds most corrupt countries in the world. A week later De Valera would respond in the Dail saying we would not join a war between two empires. This was a time when Irish independence and sovereignty was maintained and coveted.

Allied airmen who crashed in the Republic were brought to Northern Ireland. While German airmen who crashed here were held in the Curragh Camp.
Where possible allied aircraft were also repaired and returned.
Ireland shared maritime and military intelligence with the allies throughout the war.
Allied aircraft were allowed to fly over Donegal in an air corridor to the North.
