I, for instance, see it as Jesus (pbuh) being in such a high level of closeness to God, through worship, that he started seeing the world through God, hearing through God and operating through God. Which could explain "I and the father [God] are one". As in a level of mindfulness that any devout, pious person could reach if they're sincere enough. It does make sense since he (pbuh) was religiously devout.
