  • Which poses a bigger threat to black communities: Racism? Or the absence of fathers? Drawing on a sea of official data and his own upbringing, talk-show host Larry Elder shows just how important black fathers are in turning boys into responsible and happy men--and how their absence has had a tragic impact on millions of black Americans.

    Script:
Years ago, I interviewed Kweisi Mfume, then the president of the NAACP. “As between the presence of white racism and the absence of black fathers,” I asked, “Which poses the bigger threat to the black community?” Without missing a beat, he said, “The absence of black fathers.”
It was President Barack Obama who said, "We all know the statistics. That children who grow up without a father are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime; nine times more likely to drop out of school and 20 times more likely to end up in prison.”
The Journal of Research on Adolescence confirms that even after controlling for varying levels of household income, kids in father-absent homes are more likely to end up in jail. And kids who never had a father in the house are the most likely to wind up behind bars.
In 1960, 5 percent of America's children entered the world without a mother and father married to each other. By 1980 it was 18 percent, by 2000 it had risen to 33 percent, and fifteen years later, the number reached 41 percent.
For blacks, even during slavery when marriage for slaves was illegal, black children were more likely than today to be raised by both their mother and father. Economist Walter Williams has written that, according to census data, from 1890 to 1940, a black child was more likely to grow up with married parents than a white child.
For blacks, out-of-wedlock births have gone from 25 percent in 1965 to 73 percent in 2015. For whites, from less than 5 percent to over 25 percent. And for Hispanics, out-of-wedlock births have risen to 53 percent.
    What happened to fathers?
The answer is found in a basic law of economics: If you subsidize undesirable behavior you will get more undesirable behavior. In 1949, the nation’s poverty rate was 34 percent. By 1965, it was cut in half, to 17 percent -- all before President Lyndon Johnson’s so-called War on Poverty. But after that war began in 1965, poverty began to flat line. From 1965 until now, the government has spent over $20 trillion to fight poverty.
The poverty rate has remained unchanged, but the relationship between poor men and women has changed - dramatically. That’s because our generous welfare system allows women, in effect, to marry the government. And this makes it all too easy for men to abandon their traditional moral and financial responsibilities. Psychologists call such dependency "learned helplessness."
How do we know that the welfare state creates disincentives that hurt the very people we are trying to help? They tell us.
In 1985, the Los Angeles Times asked both the poor and the non-poor whether poor women "often" have children to get additional benefits. Most of the non-poor respondents said no. However, 64 percent of poor respondents said yes. Now, who do you think is in a better position to know?
Tupac Shakur, the late rapper, once said: "I know for a fact that had I had a father, I'd have some discipline. I'd have more confidence." He admitted he began running with gangs because he wanted the things a father gives to a child, especially to a boy: structure and protection.
“Your mother cannot calm you down the way a man can,” Shakur said. “You need a man to teach you how to be a man."

I'm black. My mother died when I was 3 years old. So my father and I lived by ourselves for 3 years. I know my dad contemplated suicide at least once, but he kept going just for me. He, then, picked himself back up and got married again to start another family with my stepmom. And even now he's still working his butt off just for the people he loves. I'm so lucky to have a dad like him and after this video, I feel that way more than ever.
    Thank you. 😌

@Byegurl YU2B You are incredibly stupid. Go back to college and continue with your brainwashing.
Here's a stat for you that helps you to understand how you have been lied to by somebody.
--100% of all human beings on earth right now have a father.--
You complete fool. 90% of gang members don't even tie their shoes the same way. You must be middle to upper class. That or just gifted at being stupid. You're DEFINITELY don't live anywhere near the type of community you're talking about.
These boys do NOT have a father in their lives. You dimwitted person. They had fathers who were or are in gangs. That father existed, yes. That father didn't parent them in the home. Do you understand the difference? They had a dead beat dad who knocked up their mom. They were not raised by him. They are a product of a fatherless home. THAT GUY was in a gang. Then at some point in his life that child who is "FATHERLESS" joins a gang or becomes a criminal. Just like his FATHER who was NOT IN HIS LIFE. I really hope you stop trying to talk when you don't have any damn idea what you're talking about. Especially when you are trying to talk your crap to somebody who KNOWS what he's talking about.

One day I saw a car limping down the road with a flat tire in front of my house. A young black man was driving. I waved him over and asked if he needed help. Long story short, he pulled in. He was nervous about me, the old white guy. I offered for him to leave the car here, and we (or someone) could take the tire to be fixed. He agreed, but had no tools. I got a wrench and a jack and we went to work. He didn’t know how to change a tire. “I’ll teach you. Take this wrench, but be careful. It’s old and it will pinch your fingers. It was my dad’s.” I said a little more about my dad. He stopped, sat still for a second, and said, “My dad wasn’t much good.” He elaborated more, the usual things...his dad hadn’t taken responsibility and had left them. I was stunned that in ten minutes we had reached such a level of familiarity, and felt so bad for him. But he went on to say that he knew he had to do the right things, was in school at the junior college, etc. When the tire was changed, he shook my hand and introduced himself. I’ve never seen him since, but I consider him a friend. I hope he is doing well.

Just seems suspicious to me, however, it does deserve scrutiny and if it passes should be used a fact. Until then I would need that information to validate and verify the claims.

Agreed. Having only one parent isn't enough for a child. I can barely count the number of times I heard of the difficulties of parents having to raise a kid by themselves. Fathers are really important in a child's life. As a fictional character once said, "He may have been your father boy, but he wasn't your daddy". It's one thing to bring a child into the world, it's another to be a father figure and raise one to someone that didn't have one.

A mother can only teach a boy so much. Even if the parents aren't married, a father involved in his kids lives can have a huge affect. Kids and young adults like to suppress feelings because "daddy was't there" or "daddy never hugged me" or "daddy doesn't love me, so why should I care?" Doesn't matter if you're black or white, married or unmarried, get involved with your children no matter how much you hate the person you had children with. It's not the child's fault if you can't act like a proper adult. Stop the endless cycle of abandoning responsibilities. Love your family and be thankful for the opportunity that has been given to you to raise future leaders of this country.

I was also raised by a US Marine. The big difference was, he wasn't just tough, he was downright cruel. An alcoholic, drug user, wife beater, child abuser. I try to hold onto the good things he gave me - self-discipline, work ethic, etc. But he also left me with scars that still hurt. I've had to fight like hell to break the cycle for the sake of my son. My point is - It's important to be there, yes, but it's even more important to be a GOOD father. Love your kids and make sure they have no doubts about that. If you're only causing pain, your kids are likely better off with you out of the picture.

The stats in the video were about the amount of people who think there are single mothers who have kids to get welfare. It didn't mention any facts about the amount of single mothers who actually do this, which is likely very small.
Most single mothers were in a relationship that broke up, weren't thinking and didn't use birth control, or used birth control that didn't work (no birth control is 100%). In all of these cases the mothers either weren't thinking about single motherhood in the first place, or weren't even thinking about pregnancy. If someone is acting because they're not thinking about pregnancy or single motherhood, why on earth would they be thinking about legislation surrounding pregnancy and single motherhood?
I think the best thing to do would be to raise more awareness, make birth control as available as possible (if you don't have health insurance, you likely don't visit a doctor regularly - which means you don't have access to most birth control), improve sex-ed (abstinence-only sex-ed means some men don't know how to put on a condom properly), and remove the TRAPP laws that prevent many lower class women from getting abortions - even in states where abortion itself is legal.
We should definitely not just stop welfare. Making an entire generation of one-parent kids feel completely abandoned by the rest of society would make poverty and crime go way up.

      @someperson5506 Před 8 lety +11

In 1960, I don't think there were a lot of single mothers...
The reason there are so many today is because promiscuity has increased so much, but a lot of puritanism has stayed around - meaning abstinence-only sex-ed in lower income areas (which leads to condoms being put on wrong), and TRAPP laws that stop lower income women from getting abortions.
Also, the healthcare system is really expensive, and if you don't have health insurance, don't see a doctor regularly, etc, you don't have access to most women's birth control.

Problem is Dems know that blacks will vote their way so they take em for granted, throw em a bone or two, but if they actually fix their problems they may not vote for them anymore.
Republicans don't even try to pursue black voters because being a black Republican makes you a sell out or an uncle tom.
You have to understand though that blacks have historically just had a bad history with Conservatives, regardless of what party they were in at the time. Slavery, Jim Crow, etc. All Conservative positions at the time, so you can't really blame them.

+fizman22 Not nessisarily, it really depends on how you define conservatism. If you watch the movie "Lincoln" the conservative wing of the Republican party was opposed to slavery but reluctant to enact laws that might adversely affect society. At the time the laws that you mentioned where all considered "progressive" because each law was apart of the Southern governments attempt to nation build. The south considered themselves progressive for enacting those unprecedented laws, laws that restricted both slaves and slave holders. Yes they did it in order to protect their current way of life but their actions went beyond what conservatism allows and they became "progressives." It is also important to ask what values are conservatives attempting to preserve. In Lincoln's time they where attempting to preserve biblical nothern values, not southern values.

I have heard black people say they can't keep relationships because of all the years their ancestors were split up during slavery. If this was true wouldn't divorce have been at its highest post slavery, shouldn't divorce have been 80% in the 60's instead of 5%? I won't deny slave families were split up but people talk about it like it happened daily like swapping cards. It's a bit insulting to your ancestors because they fought hard to stay together more than the modern couples who just get bored with each other. We need to seriously cut back on welfare. If you have another kid while on welfare the only thing you should qualify for is a cheap sterilization or free forms of birth control, but not more money.

    @zachredner8 Před 4 lety +5

    EXACTLY 100% TRUE! EVERY WORD!
A girl I knew from high school, married a "lazy, leech" who CLAIMED that he had a heart problem and couldn't work. Even though he claimed to have a disability, he didn't "qualify" for Disability! Which means that he probably wasn't really "disabled." So they lived off of MY TAX DOLLARS (i.e. Welfare).
When I first ran into her, and started going over to their house to visit them, they had 1 child and were constantly begging for money, cigarettes, beer, pot, diapers and food for their son. I felt bad for them, and their situation, and especially their innocent child. And they USED that sympathy to BEG for more of MY Money. And for a while, I helped them with money, diapers, cigarettes, and food... but more appropriately, I was ENABLING them to continue being LEECHES!
Considering that I was self-employed, I offered her husband a job, helping me when I needed help. It wasn't steady work, but whenever I needed help, I'd go pick him up. And going by the way that he "WORKED" for me, I'd say that he did NOT have any kind of "heart problem" or "disability." What he had... was a "LAZY" Problem. He did NOT WANT to WORK!
About a year later, their infant son was now a toddler, and she tells me that she's pregnant! I asked her... "WHY? You can't afford the kid you have, and now you're going to have another kid that you can't afford to feed?" Her response was just a Larry Elder said. "The more kids we have, the more money and food stamps WELFARE will GIVE us!"
I was so disgusted with them, that I stopped going to see them after that! And the last I heard, they had 4 kids! Because WELFARE PAYS MORE for 4 kids than they do for 1! And by the way... they are NOT "Black" people, they are "White" people! "Skin Color" doesn't have anything to do with being LAZY, and CHOOSING to sponge off of other people's hard work!
The ONLY thing that "black skin color" would have to do with any of this, is the FACT that there are a LOT more black children in "single parent households" than there are white children. And as Tupac said: "You NEED a MAN to teach you HOW TO BE A MAN!"
Any pubescent aged LITTLE BOY can make a baby! But, it takes a REAL MAN to be a "Dad."
Making babies does NOT make you a "man." It takes a REAL MAN to stand up and TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for his own WORDS AND CHOICES! It takes a REAL MAN to be there for his children, and SUPPORT them Mentally, Emotionally, Morally, Behaviorally, Spiritually, AND Financially... from the time that they are born until the time that they grow up to become Mature, Respectful, Responsible, Adults! Making babies is NOT about a 20 second orgasm! It's a LIFE LONG COMMITMENT! My children are in their late 30's to mid 40's, and they still look to me for guidance and help.
And Mr. Elder's father is also 100% RIGHT!
    "Hard WORK Wins!"
"You will GET OUT of YOUR life, exactly what YOU are willing to PUT INTO your life!"
"You cannot control the outcome, but you definitely control the amount of EFFORT you put into it."
"Before BLAMING someone else for YOUR problems... LOOK IN THE MIRROR... and ASK YOURSELF...
what could YOU have DONE that might have changed the outcome?"
YOUR LIFE is like a ship, sailing on the high seas! And EACH Person is the Captain of their own ship!
YOU, and ONLY YOU, control where that ship goes, and how that ship handles the obstacles and dilemma's that it encounters along the way! ONLY YOU are the "Captain" of YOUR LIFE!
One young person who grows up without a "Father" and becomes a Police Officer!
Another young person who grows up without a "Father" and becomes a Criminal!
What makes the difference between the two?
"YOUR OWN CHOICES" is what "makes the difference!"
NOT your environment, NOT poverty, NOT the Government, NOT the Schools, and NOT "whitey!" NO ONE ELSE is to "Blame" for the CHOICES that you make!
YOU and YOU ALONE are 100% RESPONSIBLE for making YOUR OWN CHOICES!
YOU and YOU ALONE are 100% RESPONSIBLE for "Steering YOUR LIFE in the Direction that YOU want to go!"
And whatever YOU WILL INVEST into YOUR OWN LIFE, is what YOU WILL REAP out of YOUR OWN LIFE!
So, STOP CRYING because you don't get what you want, and START WORKING for what you want! And then you'll actually "GET WHAT YOU WANT!"

"They allowed woman to marry the government" I absolutely agree. Yeah government did EVERYTHING it could to help woman become completely independent. Raising their paychecks, their opportunities, giving them loads of possibilities to get funds and support when raising children. Consequences are, woman felt confident they can raise a child and build a family without a man around. But money is not everything. Now that we see millions of kids who grew up without a father commit crimes and turn society upside down, we see the consequences of government's actions. The lesson is - do NOT mess up with nature. Some rules have been around in the society all around the world for thousands of years for a reason. If you turn that upside down, even for good reasons, expect everything to fall on your head in the consequence.

I'm a black girl and I'm currently being raised by my single mother. My father is off with another family. My mother was an amazing mother and taught me the best she could. But I must admit that my mom didn't exactly raise me on her own. My grandmother used to keep me and my brother over the weekend when my mom had to go to work and our grandad drove us down there. I learned alot from my grandma and grandad both. So, I feel like because of the family members around me and my personal experience I have been raised up well even though I don't have a father around. I don't exactly believe that you need the father himself to raise up a child correctly but someone to take on that father figure and help out the mother. When I grow up, I want to get married first before I have kids so that my children have the luxury of having their blood father around them. That's how God meant for families to be. A father, a mother, and their children.

We can however stop fathers from being pushed out from their children's lives by the whim/revenge of the mother. For the child, the right to know your parents comes first.

What do you suggest we do about fathers running away from thier kids? A woman cannot successfully keep a father out of a child's life without good reason. If a father is denied his right *in the court of law* to his kids, its for a damn good reason.
if he is simply being denied his rights by mom and doesn't take her to court, he doesnt truly want his kids.

    • @myztazynizta

That's not true. We have nothing like your welfare in my country but we've absorbed Black America's worst habits in our 2 largest cities over the last 30 years and our women act the same. It has become part of the culture to the point that even if you remove the original cause the bad behaviour will persist.

    • @Antropovich
      @Antropovich Před 8 lety +1

Drear Perry I think judges rule in favor of women mostly based on her say so. And when it is provable that the mother lied, the judges don't hold them accountable because 'it would harm the children when their mother went to prison/was fined'. I think that part of it is very visible and this should change.
Drella Stasia About fathers running away:
determine which case is it: 1) was the child planned by the father and the mother and then father runs away
      2) was the child planned only by the mother and pinned on a man
      3) was the child planned and mother isnt allowing him to see his child (even though mandated by court) and he has to pay while courts dont reinforce its own judging.
      4).. 5)..
I agree that when you have a culture of single mothers, you have culture of runaway fathers. You will get them both at the same time, for the same reason. There are many holes to be plugged in our culture of raising children so they wouldn't end up without a parent.
"woman cannot successfully keep a father out of a child's life without good reason" Yes they can with ease.
Tahir Ahmadov No, i got the point. It's just that I don't see this changing. I would change it, but something radical must happen - like a natural disaster - for this to change. We simply are too women-centered society.
