This video features Thomas Pridgen (Mars Volta, The Memorials, Suicidal Tendencies) on drums, who may very well be the most insane drummer we've ever witnessed. Thomas won a Guitar Center Drum Off at age 9, and was the recipient of a 4-year scholarship to Berklee College of Music in 1999 at the age of 15 - the youngest musician to ever receive this scholarship.

What I like about Thomas (apart from his amazing technique and bass drum) is his creativity. He doesn't copy anyone. He's the Picasso of drums. He paints a canvas with his playing - something new everytime. He's not just regurgitating patterns he's been practising at home ad nauseum. His "organised chaos" is brilliant. The clinically perfect playing of many other drummers, although I envy their chops, leaves me cold. As for the "best", that's subjective and doesn't really mean much. We all like different musicians and say that THEY are the best. My lifelong favourite is Buddy, who is completely different.
yup yup and yup. I don't think there is a greatest of all time, just preference for sure. "organized chaos" is the perfect thing to say about his style. somebody once listened to Mars Volta and said he "couldn't find the beat'..ha..he was too straight laced for this sound. long beats. ridiculous. benny greb so different from this, but just as awesome, so yea..preference
I actually think Thomas's playing is akin to buddy, he's often spoken highly of him and to hear him talk, to me it sounds like Thomas is buddy's #1 student/fan. If you watch his stick handling and the brashness of every note, it's like buddy rich reincarnate. The only difference is the years of gospel and jazz influence Thomas has, and that makes it a playing style of his own. I think people like buddy and thomas can sit down and make anyone's song sound better but they're both so naaasty, they need to have their own band that follows them to really maximize their vision. Buddy did, but I don't think thomas even wants to. He just wants to keep learning and improving off of other people's compositions. Sorry, Thomas has been my hero ever since I was cutting my teeth on the kit 15 years ago, when I was only in 8th grade.

Billy Rymer is incredible. Dillinger are amazing as they are. If Thomas was the drummer for Dillinger that would be unbelievable. I'm not taking away from the current members at all.
Samuel Keeler that’s funny cause billy said a big influence in his sound was pridgen’s style of drumming in the Mars Volta and you can clearly see and hear the similarities in their playing.
Whilst this would've been cool, Thomas doesn't have the double bass ability to play the back catalogue so he'd either need to sharpen that up or they would've had to write all new material without any double kick.
Billy ryhmer will eat thomas up.
He played with Suicidal!? I'll have to see what that sounded like, I couldn't imagine. Probably my favorite contemporary drummers. Interesting jam, Popper from blues traveler and Weinman from Dillinger Escape and it sounds great.

When thomas pridgen started as Mars Volta's drummer I used to say that thomas pridgen was the best drummer i have ever seen in my life and nobody cares because nobody really knows him. But now everyone is impressed with his hability. im must say that i'm a big visionary.

Thomas’ ability to seamlessly push and pull tempo is fucking astonishing. His internal metronome is inhuman.
