In this episode of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to one of my favorite songs from the '80s...In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel. The catch is that I've never heard this particular live version of the song. So, join me for a first reaction (of sorts) as we enjoy Peter performing in the round with musicians from around thte world back in 1993. I hope you enjoy!

I watch this version whenever I am low. It is difficult to stay down after watching this celebration of music. The world would be a darker place without Peter and the musicians he pulls together.
Thanks god, this incredible band and Peter will hit the road soon
I know what you mean. It's just pure positivity in musical form. :)
I was feeling a little glum this morning, this is just the lift I needed and you can boogie along to it. Haven't heard it before(!), lovely, Thanks Doug
You're so right.
One word Incredible!! 😊
This entire concert album is brilliant - this might be the most upbeat and positive piece, the entire performance is as good as an ensemble gets.
^this -it's just a gem
I'm a massive Kate Bush fan, and of course her duet with Gabriel on "Don't Give Up" is a masterpiece. But...
When I heard Paula Cole sing that song with Gabriel instead of Bush, my whole world turned upside down. That performance has become _the_ "original" for me, and the album version with Bush is just the cover. The way Cole sings it, it's like that song was written just for her to deliver to us. You've _got_ to check it out, if you haven't already (someone else already posted the link in a different comment here).
@@harvey66616 ditto. That song saved my life and got me thru the most painful time of my life. I saw the Secret World tour and it was the best overall concert experience I've had and trust me when I say that I have seen more than a few rock icons in my 67 years.
best singing voice in the whole music business...
@@seelenwinter6662 Might be my favorite living musician.
The "Secret World" tour that I saw in 1993 is STILL the finest concert performance I have ever attended. The second encore after this was "Biko"; a truly religious experience.
Biko is so powerful, especially if you were around in the 70's when the events it portray's happened. I hope Doug critiques it one day.
Biko...? Now there's an excellent tune.
I absolutely second that!
Agree !
Absolutely agree!!!
"Come Talk To Me" is the Gem from this show... right now I got the dvd on my hands....
Peter had a long history with set and costume design (for himself and others) I'm sure he designed the set/props for that.
It's perfection.
@@salsalzman2325 I saw Peter on 2009 here in my city, Monterrey, México...only he and his band, no more set and costume design ni lasers and vissual effects....
One of the Best. Concert. DVDs. Ever. Along with Growing Up Live. Worth it, for sure.
You are right growing up was a great ongoing and similar mindblowing...
Peter has a way to redefine every one of his songs when he performs them on stage. This whole concert DVD is exceptional, as well as his concert, Growing Up.
@BODIH Absolutely! Peter is an amazing artist like no other. The fact you mentioned Growing Up is what prompted my reply; an album which was a break from his, "normal" sound, but with some of his greatest songwriting on display. Growing Up Live is astounding!!
Shaking the tree from this concert is well worth a watch
The entire album and this particular video is THE best version of it....ever!
Red Rain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From the same album. Bass and percussion. Mind blowing! All time STAY LIST!
Fantastic song! Manu Katche is a badass drummer!! I have loved this song since I first heard it. I would definitely consider it world music.
Something I have never been able to work out.
Tears For Fears did Woman in Chains with Manu as the drummer. For some reason they wanted Phil Collins to take over drumming for the last quarter of that song..
As if Manu couldn't do everything (and more) they requested him to do. Insanity.
Perfect live performance
There will never be another Peter Gabriel. The man is a genius, a wonderful performer, and an all round fantastic human being. He's brought me 50 years of joy and I can never thank him enough.
This performance was transformative for me. Paula Cole's solo is haunting and perfect!
Dude, you need to explore some of the other tracks on this concert. Come Talk to Me, Blood of Eden, Secret World, Shaking the Tree - all stunningly performed.
Blood Of Eden is incredible on here ❤
Gabriel knows how to add a special touch of theatre to his performances. I still recall being somewhat awestruck at the closing of his ‘Secret World’ performance in 1993 at the skydome in Toronto. As the final song drew to a close the entire band disappeared into a suitcase in the middle of the stage. Peter Gabriel concerts have a habit of making you as a listener, strangely moved.
actually was at PG’s concert in Milan the day before the Modena concert so I experienced this same perfromance, it was unforgettable, I was in the front row of the center stage. He actually closed with Here comes the flood I think. Then I saw him again some decades later and he started with Here comes the flood, and said “let’s start where we left off”. Epic
I saw Peter Gabriel on this tour and it was the best overall concert I ever went to and trust me I've seen my share of pop/rock icons. The songs, the arrangements and most of all such an incredible band, featuring Manu Katche, Tony Levin, etc. Paula's and Peter's voice are absolutely magical. I honestly find it difficult to listen to any other version of this song. You should definitely get the DVD or blu ray of this concert.
Doug wait until you hear/see 'Blood of Eden' and 'Don't Give Up' and 'Come Talk to Me'.
Since you mentioned "Say Anything"and the ionic boombox scene from that amazing movie...there's a video here on CZcams where Gabriel and the band performed In Your Eyes at the Hollywood Bowl. Cusack walked out on stage as the song was starting and gave Peter a big giant boombox. Gabriel held it up over his head for the crowd and acknowledged Cusack. It's brilliant.
This is the best version, of his best song.
When Gabriel hits it, he really hits it out. Timeless.
Gabriel was in such incredible shape for this tour. Everything: voice, body, mind. This is definitely the best live concert for Gabriel and might be in the top ten of concerts in general. He was in just utterly perfect for this show.
Doug, you owe it to yourself to watch this whole concert. It is absolutely amazing. Paula Cole is flawless as well.
There are songs that have changed my life as soon as I've heard them - "The Real Me", "Brain Damage", and "Eclipse" are examples. Gabriel has written several of them: "Solsbury Hill", "Biko", and "In Your Eyes". The man is brilliant. And this version is as brilliant as, or more brilliant than, the album cut.
yes mate
This is my favorite version of in your eyes. The instruments as usual are sososo beautiful! I got to see this tour as a teenager!! I miss it and i watch this one alot. Peter doesn't rush albums, as u may or may not know. He has a new album out, all new songs. He is a genius musician!!!
Great video Doug. If you want another example of Paula Cole's amazing voice listen to, from the same concert video, "Don't give Up". What a voice!
I’m surprised you didn’t mention how high or note level Paula hit and held then took it even higher note. This version is by far my favorite one. Truly tremendous masterpiece and Live to boot. Extremely talented set of musicians and Peter is genius top shelf level of his own right.
This could be the most joyous performance of any piece of music.
This hole concert is a celebration of music, joy, fun and life. I ripped the audio of the DVD back then and listened to it all the time. I never experienced a more uplifting and positive concert, ever.
Paula Cole always gives me goosebumps.. plus she is adorable too. Check out Shaking the Tree from the same concert.
I loved how you commented this... actually my favourite song as well. I experienced this concert twice in Germany... it was the best what I had ever attended and enjoyed... he is the absolute best artist❤
once you get this DVD (a must) you will discover it is a grand spectacle of a concert on 2 linked stages. Manu Katché is an amazing drummer, so much rhythm and holding the beat without having to over hit the drums. This is one of the best concert videos ever!
This is still THE best concert I have ever been to. The performances of everyone totally on point and at the time cutting edge effects. Fast forward to 2023 - and will he perform this on his live shows this year - beyond excited!!!!!!
I'm so impatient to see him live in Paris on May! :D I plan to find a jacket and a white shirt like he had in 1994, go to the barber and ask to have the same haircut and the same beard :p Then, i'll entertain the others people in the waiting queue in the arena, trying to imitate him! :D It will be fun! ^^
I was blown away by his concert, it moved me !
@@dympm9884 totally agree, his new songs were just mezmorising
RIP Jeff Beck
1994 Secret World, live from Italy. Yes, the DVD is WONDERFUL. I've watched it so many times, I've lost track. It is truly a religious experience, so enlivening and cathartic. One of my all-time favorite live concerts. Bellissimo!
Incredible that the vocals stay so strong and clear in the middle of an aerobic workout!
What you hear in the released video may not represent a contemporaneous vocal performance. He and his studio crew spend a lot of time working on the live tracks to meet the Gabriel standard for performance quality.
One of the greatest concert moments captured. It literally makes me have such joyful tears when I watch it:. I’d give anything to have been there, but I’ll take the video.
The same goes for me Jamie. After seeing this on VHS for the first time back in 1994 I had this bittersweet feeling of bliss and loss at the same time. I had not been there! So I promised myself that I wouldn’t miss the next tour. And I didn’t. Took time, but in 2003 I saw him live. And in 2004 again. And once more in 2013. Absolutely no regrets!
Me too, I cry every time. It’s so moving.
Italy is a special place for Peter Gabriel.. they love him so much
This has been one of my favorite of his songs for almost four decades. This live version is wonderful. The entire concert album/video is some of the best live recording and performance I have ever seen.
This song brings me to tears. It's so beautiful.
I think I've listened to this version more than 100 times and honestly I like it more than the original. Beautiful, amazing performance!
Thank you for playing this. There are very few musicians I would genuinely call the word ‘genius’. Peter is one of those people. I’d really recommend you check out Games Without Frontiers from his Athens concert & Signal To Noise from the Growing Up Live DVD. They’re spellbinding 👍👍👍
One of the best concerts of the hundred I have seen. I owned this concert recording on VHS, DVD, CD, and now Blue Ray. Great Show!
Out on Vinyl too now
I can't believe you haven't seen this!!! Excited. You will LOVE it.
Doug .. absolutely go get this DVD. This was one of the most powerful live events I've ever been to (I saw the tour in L.A.). The show is anything but stripped down, but they do end that way. . From the opener to the end, it's a great performance of great tunes. Other stand-out tunes are Come Talk to Me (the opener), Steam, Digging in the Dirt, and Blood of Eden . seriously .. dig in!!
This is just so moving. I tear up everytime...
I was fortunate to see this tour in Miami, FL three weeks before I gave birth to my son. At the show I saw, In Your Eyes was the first encore. The show closer was Biko, which, because of my actions, got me in a little trouble with security. Being 9 months pregnant definitely helped me out of what could have been a long night otherwise, but they took pity on me and allowed us to go home.
The show is still among my favorites I ever attended.
One of the best concert videos I’ve ever seen - watch the whole thing! Cheers!
The best version of one of the best songs ever written. It never fails to give me goosebumps.
I was able to see this concert three times, once in the seventh row. (Unbelibal Vibe) I have been to many shows of his spanning many years. He always (Always) ends his shows with Biko. I am talking about the ones I have seen, including Woodstock. If anyone here has seen him end a concert-more like a show, with any other song well let me know, and with what song? I almost met him, but I did share a moment. Five feet from him Great shows! Great man! His work with Amnesty International is unbelievable. Putting thousands of video cameras from his own account into people's hands to record australites throughout the world. By the way, I have one of your mugs, love it! Daily Doug
I had the pleasure of seeing this tour in the US. It was one of the best concerts I've ever seen, and I've seen Pink Floyd twice. No concussion mortars, no lasers, just dancing and singing and exceptional creativity on display. IIRC, at one end of the venue was the round stage, with a square one at the other end, and a runway between them. At one point the round stage was empty, and a British call box rises up out of the stage. Peter emerges from it, and slowly walks down the runway to the other end. He's trailing something behind him, which turns out to be a rubber band-like tether, which then drags him slowly back to the call box ~ backwards. Just a spectacularly creative night. Excellent choice for a reaction.
My second fave version of this song with Savara singing Paula's part. I love this and how free she is.
Another song from this concert, Secret World, is perhaps my favorite song EVER. You must watch and listen!!!
Gabriel is still one of the best performers I’ve ever seen and I’ve been lucky enough to catch him on PG4, So, Us and Up tours amongst others. He makes it feel like he’s singing to you in a 20,000 seat venue. So excited to have just booked a ticket to see him in London in June- can’t believe it’s 30 years since I saw this tour!
Yes, you definitely need to see the whole concert, and it is available on CZcams. I have watched it in its entirety three times. Incredible!
it don't get any more uplifting than this....incredible..wonderful to see Paula Cole..such an amazing singer....her solo albums are freaking fantastic..
Celebration of Life ! I love Peter's World music
Actually I saw Peter, on this tour, in glasgow and he played two songs after this one...BIKO and then a surprise extra encore of HERE COMES THE FLOOD (with just peter on keyboards). Also the Secret World Tour comprised of two stages...one at the back of the venue (in the normal stage spot) and one in the centre of the audorium. Throughout the show the band would alternate between the stages using a connecting walkway... the way the drums and jeyboards etc would suddenly appear in the centre stage was magical. And you have to watch SECRET WORLD from this tour...I won't say anything but the ending is one of the greatest bits of rock theatre I have ever seen live!
In an interview I read from several years ago, Peter commented on writing IN YOUR EYES. He noted that in Senegal, where he had spent a lot of time, many songs are written with a religious theme but the lyrics are ambiguous and can be interpreted as sacred or secular. He said that IN YOUR EYES was his attempt to write a song in that style.
Doug, you are immediately likable. I want all the success you crave to come to fruition. 👍
Always moves me to tears. So great. The version from the Growing Up Live tour is also well worth a watch - the vocals from the amazing Sevara Nazarkhan in particular
I think that version eclipses this one. Sevara's voice and movement lift it even higher.
You absolutely must watch the entire Secret World concert. It is a wonderful journey which I watch at least a couple of times every year.
I bought this on DVD and it is one of my favorite all time concerts.
This has to be the most uplifting and one of the most amazing live performances I know. I have watched this recording so many times. Peter and the rest of his ensemble are just at the top of their game. It’s one big amazing celebration of life.
Absolutely NO rock/pop artist reaches the excellence and perfection of Peter Gabriel. He masters every single detail, from lyrics to melody, from harmony to instrumentation, from visuals to singing, from choosing musicians to making arrangements. He is a genius. Nothing and no one is comparable to what he does in his live performances. This tour is a masterpiece. And when we thought that was impossible to make something greater than this one, he delivered "Secret World" tour, that is even greater in all details. This era is gone...
Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful
You really should check out the BluRay of this. It is a marvelous celebration. This is great but it's a culmination of the concert that it closed out. Manu Katche, on the opening track is simply amazing.
Doug - Let me express my happiness in finding your channel. Your choice of songs/pieces is sublime. In Your Eyes, Inca Roads and Shine On, You Crazy Diamond? My god, man, you're being magnetized to, and uncovering the musicality behind, one masterpiece after another. I first saw your real time reaction to Inca Roads, which was thrilling. I was friends with Frank Zappa since I was 13 years old, jammed with him at 16, and saw the work behind the pieces of his you've illuminated. Hearing them again, through your ears, made me realize how unbelievably fortunate I was to get to know the guy and hear this music shortly after its inception. I'm also still friends with Peter, who I met when I was Lou Reed's guitarist on the Amnesty International tour in the 80s. We've stayed in touch and I've played his music a bunch. Big props to you for the beautifully curated music education. The fact that you grasp and follow the chordal/harmonic movement & time feel changes is endlessly entertaining, as Frank would say. Hope to meet you in real life one of these days, but thank you for this inspiring work you're doing. Your reactions bring me back to the moment I first heard this stuff. A priceless gift.
The Concert DVD is brilliant
Psyched you are so taken with this Doug. So magnificent. And he’s still doing it, unbelievably. Just epic.
Perhaps my favorite song of all time!
He has such a wonderful sense of drama. Always has. Magnificent piece. Magnificent performance.
I caught this show at Earl's Court in London, what a show, who else would start a show in a phone box?
best singing voice in the whole music business...
Secret World must be the best live performance ever recorded, of any artist, of any genre...
The whole show is wonderful. There's some very impressive theatrics going on.
My Dad and I wore out the VHS we had of this back in the 90's. We literally broke the thing. It was a good day when it was released on DVD so we could replace the VHS. One of the best, if not the best concert video ever.
Get the DVD. The entire concert is like this. Probably my wife and my favorite concert to watch of all time!!!
Peter has one of those voices that sounds as full and thick as if he was double tracked in the studio. You realize when seeing him live that his voice is just that good - all - the - time!
I'm a dream theater fan, and the song "solitary shell" brought me to peter gabriel's solsbury hill which brought me here
Peter Gabriel is the man! Love him. Thanks for sharing!
2 other songs on this live performance you have to check out are "Come Talk to Me" and "Don't Give Up". Just breathtaking performances!!
Completely - especially Paula Cole’s solo on DON’T GIVE UP which brings tears to the eyes every time. The presence of Tony Levin always lets you know you are in with the greatest musicians. His work in King Crimson is also magnificent - another great musician. And nobody grooves like Manu Katche!
@@grahamhowes6904 Peter just released a new single off his new album. ( czcams.com/video/KIDu6a9COmg/video.html ) It has Tony Levin, David Rhodes, Manu Katche and Brian Eno! It's freakin' awesome!
Also 'Shaking the Tree' from that concert I'd add.
@@fibrown444 Absolutely
@@fibrown444 thanks.
I wanna touch the light the heat I see in your eyes. This is an f-ing masterpiece.
One of the things that strikes me about this performance is the universality of it evidenced in the mirroring of movement. The earliest human instinct is to mirror, and until our dying days it brings us joy to move in concert. That "choreography" as such brings such great depth to the lyrics. Thank you, Doug for breathing new breath into an old favorite.
Growing up is unbelievable!
Hey Doug! Man...I am definitely with you and I agree with everything you said and then some about this tune, especially this particular live performance of it. Music truly is the Universal Language [of Love], and I thank you for sharing yours with us, your Beloved audience.
My personal favorite album from Peter happens to be the all-instrumental "Passion" which is the Soundtrack from the film, "The Last Temptation of Christ" starring Willem Dafoe as Jesus. I Love It! Thanks for all that you are and what you do, kind Sir. Peace & Love to All from Georgia (US)...
Something I have missed! What a fabulous song! ❤
I was at this concert. Wonderful experience
my all time favourite. peter gabriel...... .........mike oldfield is also very underrated too.
I enjoy all styles of music, and I am always brought to tears listening to this version of this song. In my top 3 all time favourites songs ever!! What a feeling it must have been to see this live ?!?!
This is my all time favorite DVD!!!! It's a must buy!
you will love the DVD Doug its absolutely wonderful
Can't get enough of Paula Cole. Fabulous.
This is so wonderful with this band, thanks for the reaction Doug! Remember Peter's Sky Blue is pending on your list 😉
There's a new album about to be released, and with Manu Katche back in the band, can't wait! He's already released a first song...
Sky Blue: consider doing the version from
Growing Up Live. He tells the song's story and it sends shivers down the spine when the Blind Boys of Alabama cut in. Breathtaking version.
@@TheLlywelyn indeed!
You absolutely have to get this DVD. It's perfect from start to finish. I could go on and on about the different musicians, but... just get it. :)
Also from this time period is his song "When You're Falling" is another "world" song that is very impressive and transcendental.
I had actually discovered this version first hearing it in our family's car back in 1994 when this tour was going on and we were on vacation in the south west USA. So discovering the So album version afterwards and hearing that was kind of weird. Good thing that you found this one. I also like seeing and hearing the many variations of the live version from all over the place over the years.
The violinist, L.Shankar is renowned for his work with jazz fusion legend John McLaughlin in the bands Shatki and One Truth Band. He also has a solo album produced by Frank Zappa.
Hi Doug! Not just my favorite artis back in the late 80's but still and Peter Gabriel just didn't fit to a any cup ver... He was making always his music and mixing wonderfully arfican rhythms to it. Very nice reaction and thank you!
Amazing reaction doug and this music is so beautiful i really love it with all my soul.
Fantastic and uplifting song. Thank you Doug for another classic reaction to my favourite artists. Your channel really makes me listen to my type of music with more clarity. Check out the version of In Your Eyes on the 2018 Back To Front Tour bluray at the 02 London some great audience reactions! PG plays the whole of 'So' in order. Wonderful
