- To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, JamBase teamed with Telefunken to produce the Songs Of Their Own video series. We began with a list of 100 Grateful Dead original songs (exclusively their tunes, not covers they often played) and tapped many of our favorite artists to record a cover version either at the JamBase office in San Francisco or at one of the many venues around town and beyond. No song was allowed to be covered twice, and today’s participants Midnight North flew to “Attics Of My Life.”
The second to last song on the Grateful Dead’s album American Beauty, “Attics Of My Life” made its live debut on May 14, 1970 Meramec Community College near St. Louis. The Garcia/Hunter tune was played live a number of more times in 1970, skipped in 1971, brought out just twice in 1972 and then shelved for 17 years. The second night of the “Formerly The Warlocks” Hampton Coliseum two-night stand on October 9, 1989 that saw “Dark Star” return also produced a resurrected “Attics Of My Life” as the evening’s encore. The Dead kept “Attics” in semi-regular rotation until its last live performance July 2, 1995 at Deer Creek in Noblesville, Indiana.
True Grateful Dead family, San Francisco locals Midnight North recorded “Attics Of My Life” at guitarist Grahame Lesh’s father Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads venue in nearby San Rafael. Filmed just days ago before their regular Sunday evening set, the younger Lesh on acoustic guitar was joined by band mates Elliott Peck, Alex Jordan and Connor O’Sullivan on upright bass, who set up on the floor in the middle of Terrapin Crossroads’ Grate Room to record their gorgeous sparsely arranged take on “Attics Of My Life.”

I have tears in my eyes. One, because that was so beautifully done; two, remembering how much money I've spent at that bar in the corner.
heh heh
Full of cloudy dreams; unreal
Full of tastes no tongue can know
And lights no eye can see
When there was no ear to hear
You sang to me
I have spent my life
Seeking all that's still unsung
Bent my ear to hear the tune
And closed my eyes to see
When there were no strings to play
You played to me
In the book of love's own dreams
Where all the print is blood
Where all the pages are my days
And all my lights grow old
When I had no wings to fly
You flew to me
You flew to me
In the secret space of dreams
Where I dreaming lay amazed
When the secrets all are told
And the petals all unfold
When there was no dream of mine
You dreamed of me
Rest In Peace, Robert Hunter. What a perfect song!
It's a sad day, but it's beautiful to listen to all these different interpretations of his words. He'll be the author of the soundtrack of so many people's lives for years to come. Including mine.
Amen. A true poet who left us with these beautiful words.
True; Jerry was there too.
Grateful Dead's most beautiful song, brings me to tears every time. Thank you for this.
I would imagine Phil Lesh must be almighty proud of his son Grahame and his band's rendition of this song. All I can say is , "Absolutely lovely." It almost makes you wonder if musical ability is genetically passed on from generation to generation.
What's to wonder? Of course, it's nature and nurture, but it sure is great that Grahame is an excellent musician and into continuing the legacy.
I think there is some of that, sure. But I also think that the number one factor that makes a musician good is passion. I always tell my students that if they're having fun, they'll get better without even trying. I didn't have any musicians in my family growing up, but music has always been fun for me, so without really even trying, I got better. But I definitely do believe in reincarnation and past lives!
Well, his dad is one of the members of the greatest band ever, so he grew up part of the long, strange trip. There could be genetics in the mix, but the environment he came up in was way more than enriching.
My fave Dead song (Aside from Monkey and the Engineer). I saw this live Once. 73 Carina's, no Dark Star or Terrapin. I got to see this perfect GEM. Great pick. Well done. I have spent my life.....
I liked from the moment they said they wanted to cover it because it's one of the harder ones. Great harmonies.
Gave me goosebumps! So good!! Phil Lesh's son is carrying on the tradition! Love it!
The "China Doll" ending is beautiful.
I come (as ever) late to the music party. This recording is just so beautiful I have to listen to it everyday now. Thank you.
Quite brilliant! Nice to see the kids carrying the torch. The flame will never die.

Love Midnight North! Keep shining that light!
Everyday I tell my fellow, Living in the Past, Octogenarians.

very nice work on a difficult tune that really sends the singers out onto a tightrope
Rest easy Robert Hunter!
Wonderful. I wish I could see the guitar playing though.
Where is Robert Hunter's Nobel Prize?
deich31 Yeah!
I didn't even realize he may be my favorite member until I was 20.
(I started listening when I was 12)
oh, precious prize. a word. shared with us all as all your strings to play words. we can't express prize. Hunter did it for us?
Agreed. Hunter deserves recognition and accolades.
Just lovely!
I think it's awesome that Alex has on a Cubensis tshirt. =)

David Jacuk one of the best comments on any Dead related thing I’ve ever read anywhere. 👏. I’m certainly a citizen, as I suspect you are. Much love ❤️!
excellent, excellent, excellent job. vocals and harmonies are wonderful! Been trying {sorta} to record this solo, with bunch of tracks, and overdubs, Found the "songs of our own" and found some real cool stuff. You guys, I thought you did a lovely rendition, and the China Doll ending was real sweet!
That’s a lovely necklace.
Wow in Italian I tell you: bravissimi 👏👏👏
OK I was really skeptical before I hit play but that was mighty fine work there folks. Beautifully done.
God, the Grateful Dead knew how to write music.
so good....
The lyrics are very much like the Sufi poetry of Kabir.
Jesus fuck this is beautiful.
Well done.
Beautiful song, one of my favorites since the first time I heard the Dead do it. Nicely done. Just to nit-pick I'd leave the bass off the intro lick though.
Great
These kids are good
Decent effort
That was gorgeous you guys. Whenever you want to add Greek bouzouki to anything you do it would be my pleasure
-George

Phil's kid does pretty good on this song

Are the opening notes changed?
no. those are the original notes.
I hesitate to say it...but at least as good as the original.
The three people who disliked this are probably phish fans.
