Of course, I was aware that as magnificent the version from the Dead, there were their ever present intonation issues. This version by Larry Campbell, Amy Helm & Theresa Williams makes one pause. Different, yes... but heartbreakingly gorgeous.

When I started to look for the key to any song by Grateful Dead I realized what heritage this band had handed to the humanity! They were really seeking all that’s left unsung.. and the lyrics fitted perfectly in every strange tune they found. Larry Campbell approached this song with utmost awe

They did this last night at The Ramble at Levon's Studio in Woodstock last night and it blew me away. All 150 in the audience were silent and in almost a "trance-like" state as was I, thought it was just from the smoke until I looked around and saw everyone else the same way!
This song was my first thought when i heard the news & i came looking to post this song - cannot describe how grateful i am to have found this glorious realization. There cannot be a better tribute to what Robert Hunter gave to us.

In the early seventies I purchased a portable stereo cassette recorder from Panasonic and the first (and only) commercial cassette release I bought was American Beauty. This song has been an important part of my life ever since. I have always wanted to do a vocal arrangement of it, but it has eluded me for all these years. There was an arrangement done by Garrison Keillor on Prairie Home Companion long ago, but I could never track it down. Acoustic1, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

No bass singing. I think that's a combination of the open low E string on the guitar... And shortly after that the male sings some lower parts. Then it's back to tenor/baritone.

This is beautiful...but...the guitar seems like an afterthought, where when the Dead perform it the actual instruments are very prominent.
